AIBU to be annoyed at Primark's return policy?

I know I am. I know they are not legally obliged to give me a refund on anything unless it is faulty. I just think their policy is really shitty.

Went into Primark today with a pair of PJs DD had been given for Christmas that were a size too small. We hadn't even taken them off the hanger as we knew they wouldn't fit, so they still had the labels on and everything where it should be.

Found the same pj's on the shop floor and they had her size and were the same price.

As they were a gift I didn't have the receipt and wasn't given a gift receipt for them but didn't think this would be a problem as I just wanted to exchange them.

Get to the till and was refused an exchange because I didn't have the receipt. Was told I needed to get the receipt and there was nothing they could do. So I either hope my friend still has the receipt and can post it to me, then make another trip into town, or I keep them and magically shrink my daughter?

What shall I do with tutu pj's that don't fit? 😑 It's been a few years since I worked in retail but if someone didn't have a receipt we'd exchange for the same product or put the current selling price on a gift card.

Bahh humbug!

Omg. Now I've read it back again and see if says you need a gift receipt! I'm off to open the wine. Ignore me 😊

linsey2581 · 20/01/2019 19:16

You can't buy the same ones and return the other ones as the barcode has a slightly different number because of the size. If you did that you are trying to commit fraud

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 20/01/2019 19:27

This happened to my dad too. I bought hima fleece that was too big, he returned it for an exchange & was refused. Luckily I still had the receipt, so was 2 trips instead of 1. I know for next time though.

ArchiesMumm · 20/01/2019 19:31

@shouldbeworking where does it say on there that an exchange can be done without a receipt?

purplebunny2012 · 20/01/2019 19:34

this has irrationally annoyed me. You buy clothes made in sweatshops and then just to stick the knife in buy a massive piece of plastic to further pollute our planet just in case you need to return the sweatshop crap.

Um, Primark have used paper bags for YEARS!

ArchiesMumm · 20/01/2019 19:35

@Shouldbeworkingnotreadingtalk sorry don't mind me just seen your comment after you posted link. 🍷

bubblegumunicorn · 20/01/2019 19:37

When I worked in retail we didn’t take things with out receipt but that was because we sold things like games consoles and dvds so they could have been bought anywhere! I would have thought that primark would be fine as it’s obvious they are from that store! But every employee will likely do it differently I know I would be more likely to refuse than some people I worked with due to them caring less about store policy

Purplecatshopaholic · 20/01/2019 19:39

OMG, Primark jammies? How much could they have been? Given them to charity and buy new ones..

Bad luck! Many shops would not insist on a receipt, but I think it is unreasonable to feel entitled to a refund in these circumstances.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 20/01/2019 19:52

I got M&S pjs in a size too big for Christmas and took them to the Red Cross shop, along with a load of other stuff we cleared out, yesterday. It didn’t even cross my mind to try to exchange with no receipt, and I hope someone is happy to grab a bargain.

Skittle22 · 20/01/2019 19:55

Had a similar experience in Lidl just before Christmas. Whilst they were getting all snooty about no exchanges without a receipt, I just said 'don't worry about it' and walked out with the size I needed.

Mumoflove · 20/01/2019 20:12

Seriously. No receipt no exchange. That is minimum standard procedure. What do you expect!!!

Vivianebrezilletbrooks · 20/01/2019 20:21

As much as I don't shop in Primark this is standard policy in a lot of shops due to shoplifters. YABU.

Butttons · 20/01/2019 20:31

I can't believe the posters who are saying they'd just swap them in the changing rooms! Shock

Sparklingbrook · 20/01/2019 20:31

Me neither Butttons. Shock

Greenglassteacup · 20/01/2019 20:33

They probably cost about three quid and they’d wash like shite so it’s no great loss

Sparklingbrook · 20/01/2019 20:34

Might be ok as dusters?

Oysterbabe · 20/01/2019 20:35

It's a bit surprising they wouldn't swap them. We took back some clothes to Next DD got for Christmas that we just didn't like and they gave us a gift card with the value on no questions asked.

Fstar · 20/01/2019 20:37

They have been saying for months now you need to keep receipt, i lost one and ended up giving the pjs to charity as they were no good and couldnt exchange

Chickychoccyegg · 20/01/2019 20:40

i just swapped a dress in Primark last week, that my dd got for Christmas but didn't fit, I swapped for another size with no receipt , I would try again, I wasn't even asked for a receipt.

Superwomaninmysparetime · 20/01/2019 20:56

Same here with slippers brought for my daughter.. I wasn’t allowed to swop them as I hadn’t got my receipt..only brought them a few days before and my online bank statement wasn’t sufficient to allow the swop.

I did however tell/show the security man on the entrance door as I walked in as I was worried I would be deemed stealing them!!

I know they used allow to swop sizes without a receipt, and suddenly now they don’t so I felt frustrated too.

I’m afraid I just brought the correct size and returned the incorrect size with the receipt generated for a refund. Hope you get it sorted 🤞 waiting to get lamb blasted for
This confession!!! 😳

Sb74 · 20/01/2019 21:09

But the op walked out with the original too small PJs so if the shop thought they were picked up on the way in, they’ve just watched her steal them? That makes no sense?!! I’ve exhanged without a receipt. I would go in and try the friendliest looking shop assistance to ask again. Or ask for a manager. I always get my own way 😄 there’s always a way around things. Just go back and try again.

Stars2theside · 20/01/2019 21:09

I don't know whether I might shoot myself in the foot here, BUT..... I also get fed up of stupidly lonf customer service queues, and then their stupid returns policy, so one day, I just picked up the right size, along with other items, took them all into the changing room to try on, and swapped them over in the changing room! Of course, I had the benefit of having my receipt on me, and it's very important to make sure it's an item with no security tag, but it works very well for me!!! Grin

Housemum · 20/01/2019 21:29

I totally understand the no refunds without receipt, or no credit note. Where you are exchanging one thing for another I don’t quite understand the risk - you already have the item, you would like to have anotherof the same item instead. If you leave without being allowed to change size you still have the item. Is the issue that you would then have a receipt and could potentially refund for cash? If so, perhaps a customer friendly policy would be that exchanges are allowed but the receipt gets marked “no refunds”
