Have you seen the Gillette commercial everybody is talking about? The one which list a number of negative things associated with manliness such as violence or sexual harrasment. I do not think they are wrong. Unfortunately there are menlike this but

What are the positive things you associate with manliness.

I think of
-protectiveness
-self-sacrifice
-loyality
-stoicism
-being a hard worker discipline

Not saying that women cannot have that traits. A lot of us do... but all of that are connected to a traditional male role and are positive in my mind... and with that I do not wasn’t to say that a woman traditionally could not have those virtues.

Large hands for opening gherkin jars.

Flyingfish2019 · 18/01/2019 17:14

lol This, too, of course.

What's the AIBU?

I wish that human qualities like this were not doled out as male or female by so many people.

ByGaslight · 18/01/2019 17:39

Patience to sort screws, tacks and nails meticulously by size and arrange in labelled glass jars in the garage.

Inability to make a dramatic scene in public even in throes of appendicitis.

Selfless tussling with wire fences, snares etc to rescue small creatures, ruining shirt every time.

Ability to sensationally lose any trial of strength against a small child.

Based on my Dad.

GlitterStick · 18/01/2019 17:48

Chivalry - good old fashioned holding doors open for example

Elfinablender · 18/01/2019 17:53

I wish that human qualities like this were not doled out as male or female by so many people.

Seconded.

But flippantly, a man rocks a hairy forearm better than a woman.

RagingWhoreBag · 18/01/2019 18:03

None of the things you mentioned are exclusively or even primarily male characteristics. They’re all the mark of a decent human being, male or female.

In terms of things men do better than women or can only do in place of women....erm. Inseminating women. That’s about it. Everything else is gendered nonsense.

PestymcPestFace · 18/01/2019 18:05

Ragingwhore men are also better at peeing whilst standing up.

I wish that human qualities like this were not doled out as male or female by so many people. thirded

RagingWhoreBag · 18/01/2019 18:13

In terms of the things I value about my DP that are entirely masculine, it comes down to his copious body hair, his deep booming voice and his pheromones that make me weak at the knees.

He’s crap at DIY, ok reasonably stoic, works smart not hard, is no more protective of his kids than any mum I know, and actually I’m ok at opening jars myself too! So in manly bingo he’d get 1 out of 6.

Pachyderm1 · 18/01/2019 18:14

The things I love about my DH are his kindness, his gentleness and his generosity. I don’t really believe in masculine or feminine qualities.

FascinatingCarrot · 18/01/2019 18:16

The sheer bravery of going through manflu

EwItsAHooman · 18/01/2019 18:17

men are also better at peeing whilst standing up

I've seen bathroom floors that say this is a matter of opinion.

Pumperthepumper · 18/01/2019 18:22

I wish that human qualities like this were not doled out as male or female by so many people.

I can’t add anything else to this. Exactly this.

Kemer2018 · 18/01/2019 18:22

Physical strength.
Problem solving/practical skills
A willy

Wallsbangers · 18/01/2019 18:30

Having a hairy bottom

PietariKontio · 18/01/2019 19:17

I wish that human qualities like this were not doled out as male or female by so many people.

Agreed too. None of my, probably few, positive qualities are remotely due to me being a man, and just about my personality as a human.

Yes, I can be 'stoical' and calm in serious situations, but 1) so can women, and 2) not all man are, and 3) I can be a whiney whinger in any number of trivial annoyances.

Opening and reaching stuff
Men have better jumpers

ricepolo · 18/01/2019 19:22

DH once told me that I was safe with him. That melted my heart like nothing else. That’s a true man to me: one who looks after and protects those he loves.

YeOldeTrout · 18/01/2019 19:23

I like your list, OP. I would like to add:

Taking positive risks
Confidence
Why not? attitude
Live and let live perspectives
Facing physical challenges

-yours truly of crap jar opening ability

DrFoxtrot · 18/01/2019 19:25

I like it when men put their free hand behind the passenger seat when reversing a car swoon

Women don't tend to do that. It's not a quality but it seems manly Grin

RagingWhoreBag · 18/01/2019 19:28

DH once told me that I was safe with him safe from what or whom though ricepolo? Men.

KingBobra · 18/01/2019 19:32

The qualities the OP lists are actually ones I associate with me (not a man):

-protectiveness: don't mess with my kids
-self-sacrifice: did you see my career before kids?
-loyalty: to my kids (see protectiveness)
-stoicism: dealing with giving birth and all that crap?!?
-being a hard worker discipline: holding down a job, plus keeping uniforms cleaned, helping with homework, enabling DH's work, etc etc etc.

What do I associate with manliness? Um... they smell nice and sometimes make me feel wibbly on the inside? More likely to read instructions before diving into DIY?

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 18/01/2019 19:35

Nice muscular forearms (but not too muscular)

Decent DIY skills (obviously women can do this too)

Nice penis and good in bed.

Seniorschoolmum · 18/01/2019 19:36

Willingness to change a wheel or take a lawn mower to be serviced.

I’m struggling to think of anything else good I associate with men, which makes me rather sad. Sad
