AIBU to ask why on earth is the Duke of Edinburgh driving at the age of 97.

OP posts:

The next bloody roundabout is bloody miles away. The Duke of Edinburgh is a busy man.

NicolaStart · 21/01/2019 21:16

I’m going to send him some Ray Bans, I think.

marymarkle · 21/01/2019 21:18

The Duke of Edinburgh is a fine upstanding man who has devoted his life to serving the Monarch.
Hahahahhaha

And he is so busy that it is fine to pull out onto a road if you can not see properly? Don't remember reading that exception in the Highway Code.

Anapurna · 21/01/2019 21:20

Read the other thread.

mydogisthebest · 21/01/2019 21:27

MaryMarkle, wait!!!! For how long exactly? 15 minutes? 30 minutes? An hour? 2 hours?

Turn the other way? What if there is no other way to go?

Yes you should use the visor. He quite probably was.

What does the Highway Code say? I am pretty sure it does not say turn round and find another route. I also doubt it says just sit there with possible a queue of vehicles building up behind you until the sun goes down!

marymarkle · 21/01/2019 21:29

Yes however long it takes. Or carry sunglasses.

Bluelady · 21/01/2019 21:31

How do you know he wasn’t wearing sunglasses? Not that they’re a happorth of good if the sun’s right in your eyes.

redredrobins · 21/01/2019 21:36

Mary you don't live in a rural area do you. The next roundabout can be miles away, and then you would be driving into the sun for longer than if you had just followed the normal route.

mydogisthebest · 21/01/2019 21:37

Mary, "how ever long it takes". Oh do give over. I am pretty sure the Highway Code does not say that.

Why don't you just tell us what the Highway Code does say?

marymarkle · 21/01/2019 21:39

The Highway Code says to stop if dazzling sun means you can not see.
I lived in a rural area for years. But then I don't think because I am busy I am allowed to risk other people's lives.

user1457017537 · 21/01/2019 21:43

Well the Highway Code really doesn’t say pull out into oncoming traffic if you cannot see a thing. How ridiculous to suggest you should take such a risk. No wonder their are so many idiots on the roads.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 21/01/2019 22:02

he's trying to enjoy his retirement away from being told what to do all the time
Aw bless Grin

StoneofDestiny · 21/01/2019 22:07

he's trying to enjoy his retirement away from being told what to do all the time

He has lived a life of complete extravagance, pampering and indulgence - and he also wants (and clearly has) the privilege to be above the law. It's shuddering to think anybody sees anything to admire about this odious man.

brizzledrizzle · 21/01/2019 22:14

The next bloody roundabout is bloody miles away. The Duke of Edinburgh is a busy man.

A side road then. I don't give a damn how busy he is safety comes first.

HowDoesThisBloodyThingWork · 21/01/2019 22:31

Bloody bleeding bloody hell all he wants is a quiet life.

Bluelady · 21/01/2019 22:36

If he turned in a side road (just like the one he’d just come out of) how would that help?

marymarkle · 21/01/2019 22:43

Reposition the car slightly on the road. That is often enough to give a clear view.
The truth is he is an arrogant racist man who thinks he matters more than the plebs.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 21/01/2019 22:50

The truth is he is an arrogant racist man who thinks he matters more than the plebs.
You know him, then? Met him? Or are you just judging for the hell of it?

Wordthe · 21/01/2019 22:57

It's shuddering to think anybody sees anything to admire about this odious man
yep he's a nasty old git

redredrobins · 21/01/2019 23:03

Served the country in Royal Navy during the war, supported the Queen for over 60 years, started the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. No nothing to admire at all Shock

Smotheroffive · 21/01/2019 23:05

I do agree its an automatic dangerous driving offence Mary but then if you're saying it definitely is then you must know, right?
You also tell us how much (or little) she will get and that you know how very important that will be to her?

How do you know? How can you possibly know what's so very important to her?

Unless you're her

Smotheroffive · 21/01/2019 23:08

So, is this just the place to chuck insults around, or discuss the incident. There's noone on here stating they hold him in high admiration or anything. The purpose of this thread wasn't to invite a character assassination, unsolicited insults and far fetched speculation.

99point9FahrenheitDegrees · 21/01/2019 23:08

To be fair, part of that life of complete privilege has included: fleeing his home country as a baby under threat of his life, losing his mother to schizophrenia/ an asylum while still at school, losing a large chunk of immediate family in an air crash, and his guardian to bone marrow cancer. And then he finished school and joined the Navy, where he fought throughout WW2 against most of his surviving family... Bags me my life of quiet suburbia over such unthinking nonstop luxury.

Smotheroffive · 21/01/2019 23:08

I don't agree

StoneofDestiny · 21/01/2019 23:10

Loads of people fought in the war, loads support their partners and work in dangerous difficult jobs as well as running voluntary groups, not just giving their names to it! All that without recognition, a squad of free enormous houses, servants on call and buckets load of taxpayers money given for the privilege.
He can't even be arsed to be courteous or civil on his foreign travels, meeting the public or attending events.
No, nothing at all to admire.
