AIBU to ask why on earth is the Duke of Edinburgh driving at the age of 97.

BlackeyedGruesome · 17/01/2019 18:09

maybe he was being driven...

BlackeyedGruesome · 17/01/2019 18:09

I haven't heard.

Tink2007 · 17/01/2019 18:10

Was about to say the same thing. At 97 I assume your senses aren’t up to the standard they were when you took a driving test.

5lnaBed · 17/01/2019 18:10

Well I believe the statement hasn’t said if he was driving or not, the RF do get driven around a lot.

Tink2007 · 17/01/2019 18:10

Apparently he was driving on the Sandringham Estate.

StealthPolarBear · 17/01/2019 18:11

It was presumably at low speed

Maybe wait til all the facts are known?

Artofhappiness · 17/01/2019 18:12

According to the news he was turning into a public road from the estate. Do the royal family need to have a driving license? For some reason I thought they didn’t Grin

cheesywotnots · 17/01/2019 18:12

He was driving himself and on a main road

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 17/01/2019 18:14

Was wondering exactly the same?
It does sound like he might have been driving.
Scary!

Ragaroo · 17/01/2019 18:15

All elderly people should be regularly tested in order to drive. Reaction times are important enough to put drunk drivers behind bars.

StealthPolarBear · 17/01/2019 18:15

Oh other people were ninvolved. Hadn't expected that

Rinoachicken · 17/01/2019 18:16

Plenty of people have road accidents everyday. As far as I know this is the only accident he’s ever had which is pretty good, as I understand he often drives himself. We don’t know anything about it, who was at fault or anything. Maybe wait until more is known before declaring him incapable?

SirGawain · 17/01/2019 18:16

According to the BBC he was driving.

EssexGurl · 17/01/2019 18:17

It sounds like he reversed out and hit a car on the public road. Not on private estate. Sounds like he was at fault. He was driving.

Artofhappiness · 17/01/2019 18:20

The Queen doesn’t need a driving license apparantly as she issues them. Same for a passport. Wonder if that also applies to the Duke? Maybe Her Maj will take a unilateral decision to revoke it!

FrigideBarjot · 17/01/2019 18:25

He shouldn't be driving at his age. I'm sure he has plenty of staff to chauffeur him.

FrigideBarjot · 17/01/2019 18:26

Must have been some force involved to overturn a Range Rover.

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 17/01/2019 18:27

Elderly people can volunteer for a test to see if they are still safe to drive. They aren't mandatory yet.

mrsbeeton999 · 17/01/2019 18:27

Was he breathalysed I wonder?

BentNeckLady · 17/01/2019 18:28

I hope the other people involved were okay too!

Sarahandduck18 · 17/01/2019 18:29

Does he have to phone up his insurance company like the rest of us?

Imagine being the call handler on that call!!

Oncloudten · 17/01/2019 18:29

Looks like he’s pulled out into the main road and possibly not seen the oncoming car. I agree, 97, it’s time to accept that maybe your reaction times and awareness aren’t as good as they have been.

TattiePants · 17/01/2019 18:29

BBC news are reporting that he was driving and was pulling out onto a busy main road. His car has flipped onto it's side but he has walked away. Two other people driving another vehicle were involved but are not thought to be hurt.

I'm really surprised he is still driving at 97. Whilst we don't know the details and he may not be at fault, his reactions cannot be good enough at that age.
