I know it's fuck loads (why I don't have a TV licence and save a fortune with YouTube and Netflix), but shouldn't she be paid the same as a man for doing the same job?

OP posts:
tiggerkid · 17/01/2019 10:15

I would've thought whether she is underpaid in this job remains to be seen. She's not been in his shoes that long yet.

YouWereRight · 17/01/2019 10:15

It depends, if she's bringing fewer listeners it's understandable.

SaucyJack · 17/01/2019 10:16

They’re probably both overpaid.

It’s not the 90s any more. Who wants to listen to either of them?

Get some new material Beeb.

GladAllOver · 17/01/2019 10:16

Both grossly overpaid.

Miane · 17/01/2019 10:17

To be fair she’s brand new in the role. No doubt her salary will go up over time in relation to performance.

Hushnownobodycares · 17/01/2019 10:18

Depends.

I don't listen but he apparently brought in lots of listeners. If she does the same she'll be in a position to ask for more.

Romanov · 17/01/2019 10:22

apart from the last time she did other radio shows? Shes not a complete novice

She was the first female host of both The Radio 1 Breakfast Show and The Radio 2 Breakfast Show for the BBC

InspectorIkmen · 17/01/2019 10:23

I think she's overpaid by about 800k actually. Is she saving lives? Working for the greater good? Saving the world somehow? No. She's yapping on about shit all on the radio! Overpaid.

getawayslough · 17/01/2019 10:23

This whole topic is often taken out of context- evans gets more as he is a bigger name, he is a bigger box office draw as they call it and has more power and influence than zoe ball. It is not about him having a penis that gets him the bigger paycheque-it is that he is bigger than ball professionaly. Funny how nobody points that out when jennifer aniston, jennifer lawrence or sandra bullock do movies and often get much more than their male costars....

badlydrawnperson · 17/01/2019 10:23

Both grossly overpaid.

I think it would be more fair to compare his starting salary in the job, scaled up for inflation, than to consider his final salary for the role.

I do think it important to look at the gender pay gap but individual cases like this are dependent on more than just gender, as its to do with performance. If, once Zoe has been there several years and pulls in similar listening figures but is still paid less, then it's unfair.

Also, if a male BBC presenter leaves and a male successor is appointed on the same salary as the previous one, the likes of Zoe and Sandi Toksvig's lower starting salaries are unfair.

SoupDragon · 17/01/2019 10:28

Absolutely.

LondonBelongsToMe · 17/01/2019 10:31

his salary was his total BBC pay so covered The One Show / CIN etc - I think zoe does a BBC2 dancing show spin off but that's part of the year only and not prime / BBC1 so on balance, tehy're probably paid the same for equivalent work (and it's massively overpaid from public funds)

Aprilsinparis · 17/01/2019 10:36

Obscene amount of money they are both being paid.

badlydrawnperson · 17/01/2019 10:39

There are countless talented broadcasters who could do just as good a job for far less but will never even get a chance.

The BBC is seriously out of touch.

Cornettoninja · 17/01/2019 10:40

I think the amount these people are paid clouds the equality issue tbf, although to my mind Chris Evans is justifiably higher profile than Zoe Ball, I’m not really interested enough to dig into whether historically that’s fair either though.

It’s bizzarre to me that entertainers have become so valuable they justify extortionate amounts of money. I love being entertained and the arts as much as anyone but it’s hardly rocket science or even talent a lot of the time, it’s just a popularity contest. Weird.

ginghamstarfish · 17/01/2019 10:49

Surely both grossly overpaid? Immoral really, they're not saving lives or putting themselves at risk, just sitting on their arses talking ....

seven201 · 17/01/2019 11:27

I know it's off topic, but I wish it were Sara cox, not zoe!

But chris was overpaid and zoe is new to the role. Listener numbers might go up or down because of her!

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 17/01/2019 11:41

I don't have a TV licence and save a fortune with YouTube and Netflix

So why does it bother you?

WakeMeWhenTheyTurn18 · 17/01/2019 12:07

Don't think either of them shpuld be paid so much, same as footballers etc. When nurses are having to use food banks. Another reason i don't watch BBC

RiverTam · 17/01/2019 12:10

Their salary isn't based on the number of listeners, though, is it?

They are paid to present the Radio 2 breakfast show. That's the job description and as such their starting salaries at the very least should be the same.

It's not about if a radio DJ is overpaid, it's about whether a woman should be paid less than a man for the same job.

ScienceIsTruth · 17/01/2019 12:12

They should be paid the same if they're doing the same job.

BUT: that's a ridiculous amount of money for what they're doing, so they're both grossly overpaid.

Tonightstheteriyakichicken · 17/01/2019 12:21

Astronomical sums!
Last October it was reported that C E's breakfast show had registered its lowest audience since 2012 after losing more than half a million listeners over the year.
I hope Zoe brings some listeners back.

VenusOfWillendorf · 17/01/2019 12:24

Nobody earning 1.2m is underpaid.

RiverTam · 17/01/2019 12:25

they are if the person they replaced doing the exact same job was paid £400,000 more.
