I know it's fuck loads (why I don't have a TV licence and save a fortune with YouTube and Netflix), but shouldn't she be paid the same as a man for doing the same job?

They should be paid the same if they're doing the same job

It’s not uncommon for people doing exactly the same role to be paid differently based on experience/time in a role. NHS handguns mean that two nurses doing identical roles can be on different wages within a banding simply because they joined at different times.

People also need to realise that the BBC was in a different financial position 10 years ago and has been stuck paying previously agreed salaries that no replacement would see whether male or female. In fact in the last couple of years many of the highest profile presenters have taken substantial pay cuts so even those already employed are not immune from the changing financial situation meaning salaries across the board are now less generous.
In other words the BBC have been overpaying some people for many years and are now seeking to return salaries to a more appropriate level meaning the vast majority of high profile replacements will be earning less than their predecessor whether male or female.

Presumably you don’t listen to BBC radio either, seeing as how you’re not contributing to it?

PotteryLady · 17/01/2019 12:54

Agree with seven prefer Sara Cox - loved Chris Evans and can't warm to Zoe in the morning

Miane · 17/01/2019 13:18

apart from the last time she did other radio shows? Shes not a complete novice

No she’s not, which is presumably why she’s earning £1.2m pa.

The Breakfast show is effectively a promotion. Last time I was promoted I didn’t receive the exact same pay as the previous incumbent I had to work up to it.

SaucyJack · 17/01/2019 13:19

Is Sara Cox still the single only other woman possible?

Dear Lord. I’m very glad I don’t bother with a TV licence.

Fairyliz · 17/01/2019 13:24

Well I'm available for £50k and I'm really good at talking shit.

Mia1415 · 17/01/2019 13:33

No, I don't think she is underpaid. She is brand new to the job. It is very unusual to start a new job and get exactly the same as the previous job holder.

Sometimes it is more (dependant on market value) and sometimes it is less (normally based on experience).

SoupDragon · 17/01/2019 15:02

It's not about if a radio DJ is overpaid, it's about whether a woman should be paid less than a man for the same job.

It isn't about that though. It's about whether someone new to the role should be paid the same as the previous job holder.

RiverTam · 17/01/2019 15:11

the starting salary should be the same - ie the basic for the job. And for all I know it is. Though I doubt it.

Gaballout · 17/01/2019 20:07

So even if I don't have a TV licence I'm not able to be annoyed by pay inequality at the BBC Biscuit

They should be paid the same if they're doing the same job.

Experience
Listening figures
Targets

All those things will come into it, plus if their salary covers any other things they are contracted to do.

Not all jobs pay the same amount for the same role. The above, plus others, will be taken into account.
For example - a teacher with 8 years experience may well be doing the same job as a teacher with 3 years experience. However they will not be paid the same.

tttigress · 17/01/2019 20:20

I think the're both overpaid.

It is not as if it is a private company that have decided this!

We get no choice but to pay the TV licence, and therefore no choice but to pay their insane salaries.

SoupDragon · 18/01/2019 07:42

A quick google shows that Greg James was paid less than Nick Grimshaw when he took over the R1 breakfast show.

Why do you think that is given it is clearly not about their sex?

SoupDragon · 18/01/2019 07:43

As an aside, his salary appears to only be around the £200k mark...

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/01/2019 07:46

Yabu.

He finished the job on a higher level, she starts at the bottom of the rung. A bit like real life. People starting on NHS band 2 for example, need to work their way from the bottom to the top of the band.

It’s stupid amounts of money anyway, no matter how brilliant they are.

Aragog · 18/01/2019 18:36

We get no choice but to pay the TV licence, and therefore no choice but to pay their insane salaries.

You do have a choice. You don't have to pay it if you don't watch any live TV or any BBC channels on catch up/Demand.

rockingthelook · 18/01/2019 19:30

Both completely overpaid, ridiculous amounts of money , not exactly working at the coalface eh?
I would have liked to have OJ Borg replace Chris Evans, very likeable and easy to listen to, both Chris and Zoe have a machine gun approach, it's hard to hear clearly what either of them say because they speak so quickly
