To turn my heating up to 21 degrees?

How warm is your house? DH insists on it being 21 but I've set the heating to switch on at 18 and off at 19 degrees. Aibu?

Pedro, your radiators might need bleeding.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 18/01/2019 07:18

I am the coldest person in the world and mine is never more than 18. Our house heats up very quickly though.

Crimson72 · 18/01/2019 07:19

I insisted to DH that we leave ours on overnight yesterday as it was freezing when I got home. Woke up this morning worrying about the heating bill!

Does anyone regularly leave their heating on overnight in winter?

AlexaAmbidextra · 18/01/2019 07:26

I could knock it on, but DP's currently at work and he pays the heating bill

Is this serious? Yet another reason I am eternally grateful that I have control of my own household and finances.

picklemepopcorn · 18/01/2019 07:29

Never on overnight!

It's on for an hour in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening. 18 degrees tops.

If I'm home all day I'll put it on but turned to 16.

Do you wear jumpers and slippers?

800msprint · 18/01/2019 07:56

35! Fuck me. I love the heat but 🤣😳

poobumwee · 18/01/2019 07:56

21ish I love being warm

brokenhead · 18/01/2019 07:57

24 all year round
My bedroom I have the radiator on 1 though

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 18/01/2019 09:10

It's interesting to see such a wide range. I'm in cold north Scotland in a newish house, double glazing, ok insulation etc. Ours is usually set at 18-19 for an hour in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening. Both DH and I sometimes work from home so will occasionally pop it on for an hour around 3-4pm if it's getting colder. Always off overnight and we have the bedroom window open a little for fresh air for us and the dog.
Any warmer and both my large hairy husband and large hairy dog would be complaining. In fact they are both out playing in the snow right now Grin

Mytupenceworth · 18/01/2019 09:20

My heating is zoned, with separate controls for upstairs and downstairs.

I turn my downstairs heating on October or November and it stays on till about April. A steady 19 degrees.
I very rarely turn on the upstairs heating, heat rises! My heating bill is normally around €150 every two months.

My house is very comfortable, not too hot or too cold!

megletthesecond · 18/01/2019 09:22

23° here in the day. Notch it down to 20 at night.

greathat · 18/01/2019 09:25

28? 35? I hope you're on your own temperature scale that separate to the rest of us! Think of the planet! Mines somewhere around 18/19

AldiLidlDeeDee · 18/01/2019 09:44

I rarely put it on during the day and it's 17degrees in the open plan room I'm currently sitting it, which is fine as I'm wearing a toasty cardigan. I'll put it on at night downstairs for a few hours and have it around 19/20 but I like a cold fresh bedroom. Usually keep the window open at night.
21 would feel stuffy to me.
Those people with hotter houses, do they spend anytime outdoors at all?

EwItsAHooman · 18/01/2019 09:45

I do think of the planet, like I said in my earlier post I recycle, etc but I need the heating on high because I can't stand being cold.

I'm not here all of the time so it's not on that temperature constantly. My combined gas/electricity is only £80 a month and that's with me overpaying, British Gas set my monthly bill at £60 but I like to build up credit so that I don't have to ever think twice about putting the heating on.

EwItsAHooman · 18/01/2019 09:52

Several hours a day, thanks. I walk the school run to two different schools which is just under six miles a day in total. Walk to the shops. Walk to after school activities. Walk anywhere that we reasonably can. On weekends we go outdoors, we live in an AONB so often go out on walks or to the local NT, the beach, etc. We have decent outdoor gear and I have Thermoskin gloves and socks under my normal gloves and socks to help keep me warm enough.

thecatsthecats · 18/01/2019 10:00

I think MiL has hers on at 25, and always sits in her coat at ours.

Ours isn't cold - just geared for people who move about the house a lot! I get disgustingly sweaty moving around if it's on too high, and I can't sleep.

I avoid sleeping at hers if I can manage it - it's horrible.

cushioncovers · 18/01/2019 10:01

21 here all the time. Too cold otherwise.

eightoclock · 18/01/2019 10:03

Thermostats are rarely accurate and also the house may never reach the temperature it's set to if it's cold outside /there's poor insulation /the heating's only set to come on for an hour or 2. So there's not really any point comparing. A new house where the heating's on most of the day at 17 is probably warmer than an old house with heating on twice a day but set to 22.

Charlie97 · 18/01/2019 10:06

20 for me, 12 at night.

35!?!?!?? I wouldn't survive!

PoisonousSmurf · 18/01/2019 10:06

Lucky to get it up to 20c. Our heating is always off at night 10pm - 6am.
Then only on for short times (6am - 10am), then (4pm - 10pm).
We use calor gas canisters as we are deep in the countryside.
Extra jumpers and warm blankets are the best option.
On really cold nights we will put the wood burner on, but then it gets very warm 23c up!

Charlie97 · 18/01/2019 10:07

Just checked my thermostat (hive) only goes up to 32.

Welshgal1 · 18/01/2019 10:13

Ours is set to 35 constantly when it's on! It's broken and that's the only temp that actually warms the house up. A thermometer tells me this makes the house between 18-20 (different in different rooms) every time anyone comes over and sees the thermostat they looked horrified Grin

WhentheDealGoesDown · 18/01/2019 10:22

I love our new Hive as now I can see what the temperature actually is whereas on our old 20 yr old thermostat if it said 21 it just meant that was what I had set it at, it didn't show the actual temperature it was at that moment

Charlie97 · 18/01/2019 10:32

@WhentheDealGoesDown I agree, loving our hive!

Mymadworld · 18/01/2019 10:38

Ours comes on at 18 but cold evenings we usually crank it up to 19 or 20 but always put it down again before bed. Our house is well insulated upstairs but really crafty and cold downstairs (big windows, crafty old doors & no curtains will do it!) so any more than 18 in the night is too hot but can be chilly downstairs in the evening.
