How warm is your house? DH insists on it being 21 but I've set the heating to switch on at 18 and off at 19 degrees. Aibu?

Thermostat set to 22 when we're awake and home, 18 over night, unless it's really cold our house seems to settle around 18 over night without the heating coming on. I still feel chilly at times and then I'll sit in the living room and light the wood burner. DH feels warmer than I do and when we were first together I lived in a new build flat I owned and I kept at a toasty 25 plus , he'd moan, but it was my flat and I paid the bills we didn't live together then, I've had to compromise now, also our house is old and I don't think I could get it above 25 without it costing an absolute fortune.
Now when we go to his parents' house which is in the countryside and is often chilly (they leave the back door open all the time for no real reason) , he says he's cold. So I think I've acclimatised him to my preferred habitat 😁

Mine is usually set at 20c when I'm in and turn it down to 17 when I go out. (I'm usually out for a couple of hours max). It is not on overnight though - last time we left it on overnight was when it was forecast to go down to -18c (and I live in the Midlands). I don't like to be cold and find that those settings are fine - I sit under a blanket in the sofa in the evening if I'm chilly as DH doesn't feel the cold as much as me.

DS lives in a student house where one of the occupants plays 'thermostat wars'. She likes it set at 21.5 and if anyone alters it she changes it back. She originates from a warmer country though so expect she finds it chilly here! DS just opens his bedroom window as the bills are all included in the rent so it doesn't affect him financially.

Bringbackthestripes · 17/01/2019 15:22

18-20 if sat on the sofa for the evening, turned down to 16 over night.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 17/01/2019 15:30

Usually 19 but I've got it on 20 at the mo

CSIblonde · 17/01/2019 15:36

23 in the day, due to ancient & draughty sash windows. But goes off early (10)as I like to be cooler at night & can't sleep in a very warm room. .

PatchworkGirl · 17/01/2019 15:39

Usually somewhere between 17 and 19 here. Set to 18 +/- 0.5

Iamclearlyamug · 17/01/2019 15:59

I don't turn mine on at all ever 🙈🙈 I've got a high ceiling, single glazed grade II listed flat as well 😂😂 I have one standalone electric heater in the lounge which is on for 30 minutes in the morning and a few hours in the evening. Otherwise we wear fleece pyjamas with dressing gowns on top and slippers. Heating is sooo expensive

tillytrotter1 · 17/01/2019 16:09

Around 18 part of the day, off altogether at night, bedroom window open too, I have woken up to snow on the window will bit I can't stand an over-warm bedroom, I just need my feet to be warm!

NoParticularPattern · 17/01/2019 16:11

Our heating is never set above 20, usually sits about 17/18 and that’s enough for it to click on if it gets a bit chilly. We are in a massive (and poorly laid out!) farmhouse which although double glazed has a lot of people in and out so there’s always a straight somewhere! We do have a log burner which helps keep the living room warm (it’s usually the coldest room, second only to our bedroom which is directly above). We also have a Stanley range cooker (like an Aga but I can turn the temp up/down as needed) so that keeps the kitchen toasty. Probably explains why we don’t need the heating on so much as the main rooms we use are warm and it’s only our room that is chilly. Usually the room temp in there is 16/17 overnight but nothing that a good duvet and pair of PJs can’t sort!

NoParticularPattern · 17/01/2019 16:11

Always a draught somewhere Hmm

CatWhisker · 17/01/2019 16:12

Mine is set at 7 overnight and then comes on at 19 before we get up. Goes up to 20 at 3 ready for kids to come home. I turned it up to 21 the other evening as i was chilly, but dd flung the window open as she was too hot so won't be doing that again.

OlderThanAverageforMN · 17/01/2019 16:16

Ours it set at 25, but then we have thermostats on all the rads. Having the stat on high, means the coldest rooms stay on, like the conservatory, while the rest of the house is off. We don't have our heating on at night at all.

RatherBeRiding · 17/01/2019 16:16

Usually somewhere between 16 and 18. And I'm in the North. But I cannot bear a hot house - would rather put on some layers. Think my little house is quite well insulated though.

If it's very very VERY cold outside it might go up to 20 for short periods.

(I also grew up without central heating. Maybe I'm just used to it!)

Junkmail · 17/01/2019 16:19

Mine is set at 20 as a compromise with my husband. If I truly had my own way it’d be set at 25. I’m always cold even with sweaters on.

FishBulb · 17/01/2019 16:47

I live in a log house in Canada. Logs are quite good, insulation-wise!

We keep it a very cosy 21 during the day, and 17 at night, although our heating ducts don't extend upstairs to the bedroom, so it gets chillier up there at night. Last night was -20C outside, so probably about 12-13 upstairs.

Our bathroom is upstairs, so I put a space heater on before I shower!

slippermaiden · 17/01/2019 16:56

Can't believe people have it so warm, our boiler would be on the whole time. Our house is mid terraced with newish double glazing! Ours is 18 at night and 19 in the day, and I am wearing jeans with tights underneath and slippers, a vest top, long sleeves T-shirt and a sweatshirt.

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 17/01/2019 17:10

Ours is set to 18 for an hour in the morning, off whilst we are out at work/school, I light the fire when we get in and the heating comes on at 5.30 till 8.30 and then if the heating drops below 15 overnight the boiler will tick over to maintain

We have oil heating and as another poster said it’s so expensive but we have s good boiler and it heats the house really well. We are in an old sand stone farm cottage with double glazing and roof insulation and it does get cold but the heating does heat it really well

tor8181 · 17/01/2019 21:07

with us heating is either on or off,we dont have a temperature control its a turn button on the combi bolier

i have a big 3 bedroom house located on top of a mountain(my back garden is literally the mountains)so it gets cold here as there is nothing behind us or to the side

i have kids that need to be naked (due to sensory issues because of disabilities) all the time, they dont sleep either so we are up all hours

my heating is on 95% of the time as it gets cold here(im valleys of south wales)at the min its -3 outside and supposed to snow in the night or tomorrow day

my indoor temp sensor is saying 32.4c in the living room and 38.3 in the bedroom as the bedroom has a very long radiator(fills the whole wall) so it gets hotter in there

i spend a good £30-£40 on gas per week as its a pay as you go meter

we do get a shock to the system when we go out in winter/autumn though as its so warm inside

chillpizza · 17/01/2019 21:19

Ours is around 21.5 but I’ve just boosted to 23 as feeling chilli

emwithme · 17/01/2019 21:21

20.5, but DD is seven weeks old and I'm spending a lot of time feeding in just a bra and cardigan (or naked at night) so it works for us.

Usually it's 19 or thereabouts.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 17/01/2019 21:22

Wow this thread is enlightening! We have a Nest thing which I don’t understand as it comes on all through the night. I’m always turning it down to about 16 or 17 as the house gets boiling, especially the kids’ room! I thought 19 was high!! Isn’t that like a spring day temperature?

LucilleBluth · 17/01/2019 21:37

22 for me as I'm always freezing. Never on overnight though.

hmwhatsmynameagain · 17/01/2019 21:37

Thermostat is set for 16 over night, 20 for getting up and evening times and 18 during the day.
I find the heating usually only kicks in for the 20 periods, unless freezing outside

museumum · 17/01/2019 21:44

We have 18 for daytime pottering. 20 for sitting down to tv or read.

Off overnight. Prob about low of 14 over nights.

Batteriesallgone · 17/01/2019 21:52

My kids hate being warm. None of them sleep well with bedrooms over about 16C (we’ve got room thermometers in the bedrooms). Summer is a nightmare, I do the whole close the curtains against the sun thing and they have windows wide open but they still hate it.

Sometimes in the day I do get chilly and put the temp up to 18.5 but I have to turn it off at least an hour or two before bed.

I’ve never really understand why people fear babies getting cold tbh. Being too hot is dangerous, far more dangerous than being cold. I guess a baby who is really cold might struggle to fall asleep but mine all shared my bed anyway so that was never an issue.
