To buy glasses to make my DD happy?

She’s 3.5 and has a couple of conditions which means she goes through so much every single day, she’s in pain with her legs and hips, has regular blood tests, injections and xrays. She also takes daily medication and is regularly on Antibiotics. She also has 2 homes, and struggles with how unsettling that is.

She has an eye condition which doesn’t cause vision problems. But she is desperate for a pair of glasses. NHS won’t give her any due to no vision problem, which is of course right. But everytime we go to see the Eye Consultant she begs him to give her a pair of glasses as she wants some. She has sunglasses but they’re not the same and she’s desperate for proper glasses.

WIBU to contact somewhere like specsavers and see if they can give me a pair of frames with clear glass in? I’ll be happy to pay for this. Her eye consultant says it won’t harm her in any way if she wears glasses with fake/clear lenses so I know it won’t hurt.

Or do I just need to tell her to deal with not wearing them?

Extra Info: I do feel terribly guilty for her conditions as I blame myself, but she is such a happy child and never asks for anything in terms of toys or anything - she asked Santa for glasses but didn't get any. She’s described as happy and polite at Nursery and her Nursery tell me she is always the last child to do anything i.e. go on the slide she’ll let all the others go first and is patient waiting her turn. Which is lovely considering what she goes through daily.

Further Info: Her desperation for glasses is probably because both me and her dad plus all 4 grandparents wear glasses so she sees me/her/grandparents wearing them and just wants to be like us. Not sure if this is relevant.

Oh my goodness, get her a cheap pair of glasses to dress up in. If anyone deserves something frivolous it’s definitely your dd!

ToastyFingers · 15/01/2019 22:38

I'd definitely get them.

toomuchfaster · 15/01/2019 22:39

I bought DD a pair from Claire's accessories as she wanted to look like mummy!! Only a couple of quid. Definitely do it!

ChippyMinton · 15/01/2019 22:39

Claires accessories sell plain glasses. She sounds adorable Smile

Noodledoodledoo · 15/01/2019 22:39

I'd by them in a heartbeat. I am a softie but what harm is it going to do?

Plump82 · 15/01/2019 22:39

You wouldn't even need go to anywhere like Specsavers. Ebay has tonnes of plane lense frames

Blazeisamonster · 15/01/2019 22:39

Obviously get her a pair!
Bless her

GlassesOrNoGlasses · 15/01/2019 22:40

Thank you everyone I never thought of Claire's or Ebay, going to have one happy girl.

Bless her. If the vision problem wouldn’t be affected by her wearing them then why not? She sounds lovely.

Kariana · 15/01/2019 22:41

Buy the glasses! Frankly if a child wanted them so badly they had asked for months, including asking Santa, even if they didn't have medical conditions etc I'd go and get some for them assuming it didn't break the bank. I honestly can't see a reason not to!

blamethecat · 15/01/2019 22:42

No reason why you shouldn't. If you go to an opticians they will probably ask for a prescription or something to show she doesn't need glasses. They will also probably need to make lenses even if they have no prescription. (Display lenses are not designed to be worn)

StickItUpYaJumpa · 15/01/2019 22:42

Get her some lovely glasses and a proper case to put them in. :)

Muddlingalongalone · 15/01/2019 22:43

Dd2 (4) just chose to spend her birthday gift card on fake rainbow glasses in Claire's Accessories. She's getting her eyes investigated at the moment so I wonder if it's her way of telling me something's wrong - or she just likes dressing up.
They have a HUGE selection - so ours can't be the only ones!

Definitely get some glasses :) I knew twins when I was younger where one twin needed glasses and the other didn't - they got a pair with plain glass in as they didn't want to be different from each other!

LEMtheoriginal · 15/01/2019 22:48

I bet if you went and explained to spec savers they would sell you a pair if frames really cheaply. They still need to fit itherwise they will be uncomfortable. Also need to consider a UV filter rather than just plain glass which may increase sunlight.

I actually have no idea if those two concerns are founded but easy enoughto ask.

Bless herCake

IHeartKingThistle · 15/01/2019 22:51

I came on expecting to say no but clearly that's fine! My DD has a few pairs of the Claire's ones.

However one of my DDs friends loved crutches as a child so her mum bought her some and let her go on them everywhere including on holiday. Nothing wrong with her at all. I was Hmmabout that!

Jezzifishie · 15/01/2019 22:52

The actual frames are cheap - I replaced my glasses a couple of times (kept breaking the nose support Blush) and they'd charge me £16 a time in Specsavers, and switch the lenses over into the new frames.

arethereanyleftatall · 15/01/2019 22:54

I'm not really sure why you wouldn't have just bought her a pair of fake glasses? What was the concern?
They're everywhere, I got dds off amazon for about £4.

GlassesOrNoGlasses · 15/01/2019 22:56

The concern was whether it would harm her vision or her other conditions, but I gave in and asked the consultant at todays appointment expecting him to say no but he said it was fine.

Yep, Claire's or eBay OP!

Butterfly84 · 15/01/2019 23:00

I'm not really sure why you wouldn't have just bought her a pair of fake glasses? What was the concern?

The OP has already said she didn't think of Claire's or eBay. She thought that she would have to ask in Specsavers so she was mulling it over first.

Wolfiefan · 15/01/2019 23:00

Well no reason not to then! As long as they’re safe if she falls wearing them. And as long as she gets a pretty case too Grin

Butterfly84 · 15/01/2019 23:00

There...she has answered with her real concern Wink

JudgeRulesNutterButter · 15/01/2019 23:02

Bet you a fiver she’ll wear them for 10mins and that’ll be it OP Grin

But yes of course get them, and she sounds a sweetheart, good luck to her. Flowers
