To have no time for 'nonsense' anymore

scoobydoobydoooooh · 15/01/2019 10:08

People expecting me to travel thousands of miles to attend their destination wedding.

People putting their name on waiting lists for designer handbags that cost thousands of pounds.

Pamper parties for 9 year olds.

Any other grumpy old ladies like to list the modern day nonsense they can live without?

"They have become a regular feature at festivals. But some see them as offensive - using an ethnic minority's traditional culture as novelty clothing. For Native Americans headdresses can be seen as a sacred item. Dr David Stirrup of the University of Kent says they are "something you have to earn. It is normally earned through exploit." The eagle feathers in the headdress are revered and worn for specific ceremonial occasions. "They are not everyday wear," he says."

@looloo, a lot of people who get offended, get offended on behalf of other people. A lot of people who arguably 'should' be offended, don't give a damn so please don't you start as well.

loolooskip · 18/01/2019 11:26

@Breakawaygirl I know quite a few native Americans and trust me they're all offended by it.

Should they not be?

loolooskip · 18/01/2019 11:27

@Breakawaygirl A lot of people who arguably 'should' be offended, don't give a damn so please don't you start as well.

Please tell me how many Native Americans you know that aren't offended?

loolooskip · 18/01/2019 11:28

These people are friends that are dear to me. I'm allowed to get offended on their behalf. I'd be a bit fucking weird I I wasn't.

Giggage · 18/01/2019 12:04

Threads that go off on a tangent.

drspouse · 18/01/2019 12:06

Nobody would wear an imam's outfit as a costume nor a hijab. And many Christians find wearing a nun or priest's outfit pretty offensive (I do).
So don't wear religious costumes from other traditions. Simple.

Jennypilgrim · 18/01/2019 12:26

Please don't pull this enjoyable thread off topic and start having a sideways debate.

loolooskip · 18/01/2019 12:29

@Jennypilgrim

Starting a separate thread is against Mumsnet rules and would be deleted.

So you think views like that should remained unchallenged and ignored? That's part of the problem.

Jennypilgrim · 18/01/2019 12:32

No it's not against the rules. Starting a thread about a thread is. But there's nothing to stop you starting a thread to discuss the specific issue you're currently debating.

Pulling a thread off topic is rude.

And I'm not debating this with you any further for that very reason.

Jennypilgrim · 18/01/2019 12:33

Sorry, meant to add that the view hasn't been ignored and unchallenged. You've done that, so maybe leave it there?

loolooskip · 18/01/2019 13:08

Ironic that your name is 'pilgrim' Hmm

parishmeeting · 18/01/2019 14:54

Give it a rest loolooskip. You've made your point. Now please let the thread resume to the topic it's meant to be about.

To get it back on track:

People having 600 Facebook friends but not knowing the name of their next door neighbour.

Children's parties being held in Claire's Accessories. So wrong!

Chickenwings85 · 18/01/2019 15:06

I have found my people. Can we all move away and live on an island together away from the less superior people....please?

KateArronax · 18/01/2019 15:06

People who judge and take offence where none was intended and then wonder why you thereafter talk only when you have to and without truly communicating and thus fail to give them the "relationship" they feel they deserve.
One big one of these in my family who moans to those that still listen that they feel lonely and ignored.

ovos · 18/01/2019 15:09

I have found my people. Can we all move away and live on an island together away from the less superior people....please?

I think you'd quickly end up hating each other if you all lived on an island together!

JaneJeffer · 18/01/2019 15:10

People who wear Aran jumpers when they're not from the Aran Islands is cultural appropriation of the highest order

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 18/01/2019 16:21

Oh looloo. You followed me round having a go at me yesterday because I challenged Ableism. Called me goady and accused me of being "offended" and picking fights. Yet here you are, preaching about challenging views, not ignoring them. Oh the irony Grin

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 18/01/2019 16:21

Oh I have one for this thread! People who say people shouldn't do something, then go and do it themselves.

IrmaFayLear · 18/01/2019 16:53

How about some people on here starting their own thread about what nonsense in modern life they love ?

The decline in manners - good
The decline in spelling and grammar - even better
Social media - wonderful for letting everyone know all about you
Getting offended - very necessary
Getting offended on behalf of others - totes wokes

Get orf our thread!!

Slippershoes · 18/01/2019 17:06

Dramatic people who are over invested in other dramatic people's lives, who then expect you to be interested in any of that crap.
Adults who break up and get back together more often than a teen romance and expect you to keep up with it. In fact just see above.

KateArronax · 18/01/2019 17:07

Another great modern thing: well defined eyebrows and facial contouring so that every photo looks top notch!

Bloomcounty · 18/01/2019 17:12

Dog slobber. I've just been slobbered all over by a friend's bulldog puppy. An adorable, funny lunatic 5 month old with the slobberiest mouth I've ever known.....I'm revolted and charmed in equal measures.

pollysproggle · 18/01/2019 17:48

All of the above...
...and I'll add friends that only want to meet up because their DP/DH is going out.
"James is going out with his friends on Friday, let's have a girls night!"

malificent7 · 18/01/2019 17:54

Colleagues...even the friendly ones end up playing the political game.
Just other people in general...cannot be arsed.

Id love to be a cat and just lie around all day...sigh.

I'm aware that makes me sound like a right charmer!
