@oatmilk4breakfast , while it is laudable to do things for people on your block, don't spend more money on other people than on yourself.
FWIW, I wouldn't be part of other people's plans unless they were family or close friends.

wildchild554 · 17/01/2019 08:20

I don't nessessarily forsee a problem with electric but if you use an electric can opener as I do, would be wise to make sure you have a couple of manual ones too in case of power outages. Thought it's something that might slip peoples minds. No point in having cans of food if you don't have anything to open them with. ;)

SalrycLuxx · 17/01/2019 08:40

Not that I think anywhere but NI could really lose any power, but just to mention it is possible to
Open cans without a tin opener by rubbing the end (hard) on concrete.

SalrycLuxx · 17/01/2019 08:40

Filled with random knowledge, I am.

Member745520 · 17/01/2019 08:46

@SalrycLuxx Open cans without a tin opener by rubbing the end (hard) on concrete.

That's a new one on me! Can't quite see how it would work so will need to have a go later. Neighbours might send for the white coats though Grin

I did think same as wildchild two days ago and added a manual can opener to my shop...

bellinisurge · 17/01/2019 08:49

I know the rubbing on concrete trick too. Which is why I have a manual can opener Grin

bellinisurge · 17/01/2019 08:50

And know how to use it, of course! I also really the really difficult can opes not these piece of piss manual ones you can buy now 👵🏻

GottenGottenGotten · 17/01/2019 09:01

I also really the really difficult can opes

That's good then!

bellinisurge · 17/01/2019 09:05

Showing both my age and my inability to type Grin. Can still wrangle a can opener, though. GrinGrin

wildchild554 · 17/01/2019 09:08

@Member745520 I'd add 2 in case one fails, have a tendency of them breaking on me, they seem poorly made these days ;)

Vickbas · 17/01/2019 09:11

I've opened a can with a bottle of wine and a knife before, used the knife pointing down on the can then hammered it in with the wine, would not recommend thay method!

bellinisurge · 17/01/2019 09:13

Yep, I remember from childhood, manual can openers starting to fail on you and having to open in sections with weird angles and tight grips.
Get two.

Member745520 · 17/01/2019 09:28

I must admit I was a bit dubious about my can opener purchase - it looks to me rather far out technologically speaking! Made me remember with some fondness the sharp ended claw type you just jabbed in and levered around which left lethal sharp edges but got the job done. And the simple butterfly one, though they seem to fall to pieces these days. If you can find one, that is...

cloudtree · 17/01/2019 09:31

We've had one like the oxo god grips opener for 20 years and its still going strong.

Also have two cheap butterfly ones in the pantry just in case. £2.50 on amazon.

wildchild554 · 17/01/2019 09:44

@Member745520 I think I have a claw one, inherited from my grandad but never used it. Do work well then apart from sharp edges?

bellinisurge · 17/01/2019 09:51

Brute force plays a large part in the operation of claw ones.

Mistigri · 17/01/2019 10:01

Genuine question. Don't British tins have ring pulls? I live in France and it would be quite hard to buy a tin that required a tin opener. I don't even own one.

bellinisurge · 17/01/2019 10:02

Yes they do. Mostly. Apart from the random ones that don't.

DrStrangeBeard · 17/01/2019 10:08

Thank you everyone for such interesting threads.

On the back of this, I bought a bread maker off fb and so far have bought in a giant bag each of rice and pasta, uht milk (organic moo on sale in Sainsbury's for 80p), frozen Quorn chicken pieces (on offer for £1 in Sainsbury's) and wheetabix.

I'm pissed off that I have to think about this. I'm worried that my antidepressants won't be considered life saving or be available. I missed a few days when we had d&v and couldn't get to the pharmacy, and I was suicidal within 72 hours or running out.

I also think that even in best case scenario and Brexshit is cancelled, the twats who wanted will cause civil unrest. If we have supplies in, we can just ride it out.

bellinisurge · 17/01/2019 10:11

@DrStrangeBeard , I both glad and sorry that getting extras in helps. I wish it wasn't so. Please make sure you have someone to talk to in real life, even the Samaritans by phone.

cloudtree · 17/01/2019 10:32

Ive found the cheaper brands don't have ring pulls. So things like East End chickpeas and tomatoes (cheap brand and often on offer 4 for 3) - no ring pulls. Things like evaporated milk also don't tend to have ring pulls.

DrStrangeBeard · 17/01/2019 10:36

@bellinisurge Thanks. I'm fine now. That aas a few months ago. I just worry about supplies. DH and PILs are very supportive.

I'm hoping the gp will indulge my anxieties and prescribed and extra couple of.months if poss.

Member745520 · 17/01/2019 10:38

@cloudtree Thank you
@wildchild So far as I remember. I also know you can use one of those short sturdy pointy ended bottle opener things but it takes forever; the round end of the above bottle opener thing is useful for breaking the vacuum on tight lidded jars. It took me decades to work that one out.
@Mistigri Sometimes I manage to break off the ring pull before it even gets started...

bellinisurge · 17/01/2019 10:39

Yep, that's right. East End cans, usually in the "Indian food" section of the supermarket are ring pull free. It's a brilliant section for all sorts: pulses, rice, herbs, cooking oil.

Member745520 · 17/01/2019 10:49

...ahh!! The World Foods section! Mango pulp - Sauerkraut - red peppers in jars... don't get me started...
