I did a big stock up at Asda today. Lots of Heinz tins eg beans and sausages 50p.
Boring but filling food.
Just need to buy more, ideally a months worth of food.

Couldn’t see any shortages of long life milk, flour etc which made me feel a little bit better.

GummyGoddess · 16/01/2019 18:14

@wildchild554 Sorry, I meant normal as in with no food restrictions (no eating disorder, allergy, diabetes, coeliac, etc). I have ARFID so I would literally starve rather than eat 'whatever's available', and even if I could bring myself to try new foods I would likely vomit it back up before it had even hit my stomach. In fact I ended up in hospital as a child after my mother was told that I would eat when I was hungry.

wildchild554 · 16/01/2019 18:24

I know someone with a little girl in a similar situation. Unfortunately her little girl has a very limited diet of about 10 fruit and vegetables so don't know how she will manage tbh.

NopeNi · 16/01/2019 18:31

@GummyGoddess that's interesting, I've just looked up ARFID and am guessing that's the proper name for what I have (I just assumed it was all clubbed under autism).

I have cautiously tried three new foods in the last two weeks because of all this, and two of them are bearable - so for me that's a huge development. I'm actually quite proud!

I'm looking into supplemental powders that I could add to food or drinks (like protein) but I don't know if I could force myself to swallow them.

NopeNi · 16/01/2019 18:32

(When I say "new foods" I mean similar to ones I already eat, but new brands with new ingredients - so for me it's brave.)

BrexitDestruction · 16/01/2019 18:43

I think that's brilliant NopeNi, you should be proud.

I don’t trust this gvt to organise a piss up in a brewery, let alone make preparations for a smooth brexit. I’m pretty sure there will be delays at customs (unless they just start waving lorries through, which I’ve read is an option - yey, brexit!), and some problems caused by panic buying, so I am preparing. I don’t think we’ll all be rationed and hungry, but I do think there will be items missing off the shelves. Not a huge problem for society, but enough to annoy me. So I’ve been trying to get extra of the things I’d be annoyed to be without. Tea, coffee, baked beans, smooth peanut butter, deodorant etc. Being without them wouldn’t kill me, but I’d rather have them. And I’ll use them all anyway, even if there is no shortages.

I’ve been trying to get ahead with medication prescriptions, though. My son has daily potentially life-saving medication. I don’t know what we’d do if the NHS were to run out. I think it’s an easily stockpiled medicine (by the NHS, not by me) due to its shelf life, so hoping my fears come to nothing. We have fixed dates for renewing and only allowed a month at a time, but I’ve managed to get a couple of weeks ahead by ordering prescriptions on the dot.

AnotherShirtRuined · 16/01/2019 18:52

Who in their right mind puts a horse on a prepping list?! Shock You would need both a stable and feed, and who is going to be able to stock up on that? I think a bicycle would be a rather more sensible - and economical - choice.

PestymcPestFace · 16/01/2019 18:53

Well done NopeNi , I have two ASD DC and know what a big step this is.

DC3 is a coaliac so we have a few sensible supplies in.

GummyGoddess · 16/01/2019 19:02

@NopeNi that's great! I used to have about 5 foods I would eat but I've had hypnotherapy (thought was stupid at the time) and have greatly expanded my diet. It's still limited compared to others but is amazing compared to what it was and I have the tools to slowly introduce new food but it takes a long time.

I have autism but a friend who doesn't have autism has the same disorder. It's much more likely with autism though.

Gobolinocat · 16/01/2019 19:10

Not read thread except this last page that someone has put a horse on peppers list Grin

Melassa · 16/01/2019 19:54

Not wanting to come across as smug or facetious or fuckity fuck (DM) anything, but as a resident of mainland Europe with an addiction to Kettle Chips should I stock up? Will they no longer be available in the old continent after a no deal? I’ve also been asked by a local friend if she should stock up on McVities digestives. There are local brands but they are pale and sad imitations. Are McVities baked in the UK only? I know Kettle Chips are, there are local versions of those too but not a patch on the real stuff.

Yes, I know, a first world problem compared to you lot who are stuck in Brexitland, but a concern nonetheless.

bellinisurge · 16/01/2019 20:03

@Melassa , I love Kettle Chips too and they form part of my treat stash.Grin
I'd be uncertain of prompt and reliable delivery in your shoes.

GottenGottenGotten · 16/01/2019 20:31

5.9 million glasses of milk poured down the sink every year.
1.3 million apples.
240 million slices of bread.
5.8 million potatoes

So thats a tenth of a glass of milk per person
two hundredths of an apple
4 slices of bread
and a tenth of a potato.

per year! I'm surprised it's that low tbh.

NopeNi · 16/01/2019 20:38

Thank you @BrexitDestruction @PestymcPestFace and @GummyGoddess Smile Gummy, that's incredible - hypnotherapy is something I've wondered about, I'd love to be less weird about food. If you don't mind me asking, how many sessions did it take, and how did you find them?

wildchild554 · 16/01/2019 20:41

@GottenGottenGotten so am I tbh, we don't waste anything here, even fruit and veg peeling if not used in stock go in compost but then I don't think we have an average lifestyle. Even chicken bones are boiled down for stock. There's several people I know who waste alot more than that so not sure how reliable those figures are.

Member745520 · 16/01/2019 20:45

@cloudtree Wed 16-Jan-19 10:24:39 Chickens eat anything else including egg shells. Things they can't eat like potato peelings and onion ends go into the composter

When I was a child I remember my mother always boiled up the potato peelings into a mash for the hens. It smelt wonderful. And they always devoured the result.

flowerycurtain · 16/01/2019 20:50

Wow. Quite interesting to read all of this.

Wouldn't worry too much about weetabix. I live up the road from their factory and it's uk sourced wheat. We export loads of wheat so if we can't export it it can all just go to make more weetabix!!

Agriculture is def preparing for no deal. 18 months Chemical and fertiliser stocks with delayed payments are normal at the moment.

Melassa · 16/01/2019 20:59

@bellinisurge oh dear Sad. Happily at the moment they are on a 2 for 1 offer but that just means I eat 2 packets instead of one as I have no willpower. Might need to hide them in the cellar.

We could of course organise a smuggling ring, some nice wine or olive oil for a couple of packets maybe? Will they check the suitcases like in the 80s on school exchanges? Surely they will have better to do?

On a more serious note I really feel for you, my nephew has serious food phobias and has gone on hunger strike before if his fave brand wasn’t available. My DDad is on a whole range of meds (think meds to combat the side effects if the other meds) and he is oddly convinced it’s all manufactured in the UK. Even if this was the case, how certain are we that the manufacturer would be able to get hold of the principle compounds to make the meds if the supply chain is disrupted?

RedToothBrush · 16/01/2019 22:14

Jane Merrick @ janemerrick23
I do also think the government needs to say something more explicit about stockpiling. People are going ahead and doing it anyway, but where does this leave the most vulnerable/elderly? What about food inflation? We need a Cabinet minister to say something publicly.

Journalist saying this.

May would not be adverse to culling some sectors of society.

oatmilk4breakfast · 16/01/2019 23:14

This is why I am putting things aside. Trying to do it for others in my block who I know don’t have as much cash monthly - I’m freelance and just been paid an invoice - but I don’t like doing it and especially as my husband thinks I’m mad. But I genuinely don’t think the Govt will care about price rises. As soon as I say Sainsbury’s ‘locking down’ prices for ‘at least 8 weeks’ I knew they were planning to put prices up. So if for no other reason I’m putting tinned vegetables especially behind the books on my shelves and hoping no-one notices. I’m basing purchases around a very few stew type / simple recipes that I know how to cook and people have eaten before so nothing will be wasted.

oatmilk4breakfast · 16/01/2019 23:15

saw not say!

GummyGoddess · 17/01/2019 00:31

@NopeNi 4 sessions that my mother insisted I go to which I said were rubbish Blush

It helps me remain calm if it goes wrong and I vomit, or if food gets on the roof of my mouth.

Basically it's thinking about the food, looking at it, holding it, touching it to your lips, smelling it, touching it to your tongue, holding a teeny bit in your mouth, moving it about in your mouth, biting it and spitting it out, chewing and spitting it out and eventually swallowing the tiny bit of food. Each of those stages takes as long as they need to, can take weeks for one and minutes for another. You then continue daily eating a tiny bit and building up until you don't notice the texture as alien anymore and are happy to eat more of it. My tiny bit of food is about half the size of my little finger nail.

I think you could get similar results with meditation and following the steps, it might just take longer doing it alone at first.

SalrycLuxx · 17/01/2019 07:15

MIL thought we were mad for stocking the larder (as I’m now calling it).

...yesterday she went out and stocked up too!
