MrsA, you wrote "From the moment I landed on Canadian soul as a permanent resident, I was reminded that I was lucky to be there.^ That it’s a beautiful country populated by tolerant, kind, hard working people, and that I was privileged to be able to join them, that Canadian values are good values. Canada owed me nothing. It wasn’t my country of birth. But after fours years, I became a citizen and I’m proud to be one^".

You'll have to forgive any confusion, but you can't deny that you might have contributed to it.

If you’re stuck for something to do, you could always re-do your IT security awareness courses?

TheElementsSong · 22/01/2019 11:35

I’ve thought of an even better pledge to really demonstrate BeLeaving.

Not only should a True BeLeaver not prep anything, but they should pledge to throw a Freedom party from midnight on March 30. And at this party they should ceremonially drag every item of food out of their house and feed it to everybody on their street. Other consumable items such as loo roll and medications, should be formed into a festive bonfire in the shape of (say) a Europe map, and ceremonially burned.

How about this pledge? Grin

User758172 · 22/01/2019 11:35

Of course I haven’t contributed to it. You just don’t remember what else I might have said. Which I don’t expect you to, I’m nobody to you! But why repeat that one example of something I’ve said as though it’s the whole truth of my existence?

User758172 · 22/01/2019 11:39

@Mistigri

That wasn’t kosher, I do apologise. I just don’t quite understand why you seem to have a bee in your bonnet about my being Canadian. You always point it out as though I’m not entitled to an opinion. Unless it annoys you that I had a vote and you didn’t?

Mistigri · 22/01/2019 11:39

If you post about being a permanent resident in Canada and how great being Canadian makes you feel then it's kind of understandable if people wonder why you would think stockpiling for Brexit was relevant to you.

I'm not stockpiling for Brexit, for the very good reason that I live in France. But if I lived in the UK I would be at minimum starting to consider following the sensible "be prepared, well stocked pantry" advice given by Bellini and others.

User758172 · 22/01/2019 11:40

@Mistigri

Because I don’t live in Canada?

Mistigri · 22/01/2019 11:44

Everyone is entitled to an opinion MrsA. That paragraph of yours was a particularly eloquent argument in favour of how immigrants often feel about their adopted country, which is why I remembered it, and assumed you were in Canada. At least you'll have somewhere to go if Brexit goes horribly wrong Wink

User758172 · 22/01/2019 11:53

@Mistigri

That’s nice of you to say. I’m sorry for being short and sarcastic with you.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 22/01/2019 11:57

I'm mostly looking at stocking up on stuff that will see a big price uplift if sterling tanks again [wine mostly so far]. And perishable stuff that can be frozen - lots of skim milk in the freezer for example.
I am seriously considering growing more stuff from seed this year though.
The key issue expected by food retailers and large caterers appears to be "just in time" deliveries that can't be stockpiled. Fresh salads and veggies, dairy etc. Bread. Basically all the stuff that runs out quickly when there's really bad weather.

If we had serious dietary requirements/allergies I'd definitely be stockpiling more specialist stuff that won't go off. More because prices will go up than necessarily long term shortages. It's not like supply ships are going to be bombed in the channel...

Pisses me right off though - so many people going hungry in the UK already and the UK is spending millions to prepare for something quite easily avoided.

BlackeyedGruesome · 22/01/2019 13:13

Tin foil. for hats no-one has mentioned that on this thread yet.

I was only part way through thread one so it may have been mentioned there.

Anyway, I am avoiding my kitchen as both worksurfaces have disappeared under the contents of the bottom shelf of my food cupboard. I have got to pull out the stuff in the far back corner the clean and reorganise. I need to make a list of what I do have, I have already found I am lacking in things I thought I had and have more of some things than I thought. I have got rid of the old bottled water and need to update that.

Things I need to buy: oil for cooking.
Olive oil.
Bottled water
Raisins and sultanas.
Batteries
Wind up torches, lamp and radio.
Nuts. I may have accidentally eaten part of my stash. Blush ds eats nuts though DD is allergic.
Tinned peas and sweetcorn
Tinned tomatoes
Powdered milk.

I need to use up old pasta and restock with fresh. I think I have made room for more tins of chopped tomatoes and am contemplating getting tins of peas and sweetcorn in case the freezer goes tits up.

I will try tinned carrots in pasta sauces to see how they taste and whether the children will eat them.

Right, I am going into the far depths of the cupboard again, wish me luck!

cloudtree · 22/01/2019 13:14

No need to use up old pasta. It lasts for decades

wildchild554 · 22/01/2019 13:26

@BlackeyedGruesome I bought a couple of 10 litre water bags that I keep filled and just need to empty and refill then every few months. I bought them on amazon, pretty cheap and will probably save you a fair bit ;)

wildchild554 · 22/01/2019 13:29

@BlackeyedGruesome also have you looked into dehydrating your veg, it maintains more of the nutritional value than canned and then can keep it in the cupboard. Dehydrators can be found pretty cheaply and then don't have to worry about freezer going down.

wildchild554 · 22/01/2019 13:30

@BlackeyedGruesome also takes up less room as your essesntially removing water content till you rehydrate them

bellinisurge · 22/01/2019 13:54

For anyone just tuning in and at the risk of hijacking this thread (again Blush), canned is absolutely fine . Dehydrating is cool and is more a prepper thing- I do it much to the amusement of Preppers on tbe Preppers topic. But you don't need to unless that is a route you want to go down generally. PS my fussy eater dd adores my fruit leathers.

wildchild554 · 22/01/2019 14:12

@bellinisurge mine too, and candied citrus peel have you tried making them? Citrus peel slice and coated with honey :P

bellinisurge · 22/01/2019 14:14

Oooooo - sounds like a project. Thanks @wildchild554

BlackeyedGruesome · 22/01/2019 14:39

Some of the pasta was very out of date.

Some stuff is being sent to ex as it is his sort of thing.

I am trying to work out how to use the back corner of the cupboard as that is usually the place where food goes to die and fester a decade out of date.

How out of date would you eat pasta?

I am thinking unopened packs of dried beans and lentils in a box in the back corner. We are a lentil and bean eating family and have several unopened bags. I need to be more organized as we have several open bags as well. Blush

I have found rather a large stash of balsamic vinegar though. I really ought to sort cupboards more often but the children have had a bad couple of years health wise.

BlackeyedGruesome · 22/01/2019 14:41

Decades for pasta.. oh ok. I will bring it to the front to use.

TheElementsSong · 22/01/2019 16:50

Did I miss any pledges? I was expecting loads seeing as the No Deal Sunlit Uplands seems such a popular option amongst MN Leavers.

BadlyAgedMemes · 22/01/2019 16:55

I can pledge not to make more ragu, if that helps, Elemenst ? My freezer is full now... And we'll probably eat ragu all week...

AnotherShirtRuined · 22/01/2019 17:30

@TheElementsSong Have you ever received any pledges? Grin

TheElementsSong · 22/01/2019 17:38

Shirt Grin

It depends how you define "pledge" - over many months I've had, I think, 2 MNers snarl at me in a vaguely affirmative manner (like "rarrr, of course I believe in the Sunlit Uplands how very dare you"), but nobody has actually typed the actual words. It's almost as though, like Dyson has demonstrated, they don't quite absolutely BeLeave Hmm

AnotherShirtRuined · 22/01/2019 17:49

Funny, that. They come on here and on the prepper board to sneer at us but are never actually prepared to pledge according to their beliefs Hmm
