There's a dog in my house

There's a Labrador in my house and I don't know where it's come from. DH appears to of left the back door unlocked by mistake, but it was shut? He's at work and knows nothing about it, I've just got home from work and I have acquired a dog. Collar but no ID tag. What is going on?! How did it get in?! Can labradors open and close doors? My little King Charles cavalier spaniel seems to think he's his new best friend so has obviously enjoyed this unplanned play date (thank god a friendly dog decided to break into my house and not an aggressive one) no idea how long this lab has been here but house has been empty besides our dog since 11am. Someone please tell me how this is possible. I'm baffled. Waiting for DH to get back with the car so I can get him to a vets before they all shut and see if he's chipped.

Ahh this is so sad 😭

My grandparents black lab was my best friend when I was a kid ❤️

billybagpuss · 14/01/2019 21:43

How did Chester manage to get in though?

ILoveChristmasLights · 14/01/2019 21:58

I’d be crying too! 💐

I think the best thing that’s come out of this is that you and her daughter have each other’s numbers and she knows you’re happy to help if you can and that your DH is lovely - and obviously that she’s not worried about the ‘mystery man’ now.

Don’t forget to tell her that if Chessie ever needs a new home you’d like to be considered. I’m sure your DDog would love a playmate, especially as you’ll be busy with the baby! 😊

StandUpForYourRights · 14/01/2019 22:01

Awww how lovely. Such a lovely thread.

WellBHoise · 14/01/2019 22:02

Absolutely well done OP! Calling her police was the right thing to do, and the daughter would have been so happy to hear someone looked out for her mother like that.

showmeshoyu · 14/01/2019 22:06

Offering to give that big, lovely boy playdates is a good thing to do. I'm sure the owner is pleased.

Freezby · 14/01/2019 22:10

@billybagpuss Still not 100% sure! Her daughter said she wouldn't be surprised if her mother had let him in as she's been acting very unpredictable and doing unusual things, but she said he can open doors! He's become a bit of an escape artist recently apparently.

Well now he knows where you and his KC friend live, I expect he'll be popping round again.

cocoajumbo · 14/01/2019 22:24

Best thread ever.

Enhanced by everyone sharing their own dog pics Grin

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 14/01/2019 22:28

Aww, nice you’ve found out his name. Hope he and his owner are safe though.

showmeshoyu · 14/01/2019 22:29

If you listen carefully, you can hear hearts melting.

Kelpiex2 · 14/01/2019 22:30

Something very similar happened to me. I found dogs wandering. Owner had dementia.

Owner went into a home and dogs were offered to me via family.

I wasn't in a position to take them due to resident grumpy dog.

It was a sad few weeks looking back, but they were rehomed happily Smile

AlanThePig · 14/01/2019 22:36

Please try and keep an eye out op.

Many many years ago my nan had a constant companion, a little yorkie. She walked her for miles and put bows in her hair. Then nan developed dementia. Suddenly her love and tolerance for the dog vanished and a neighbour called us upset as she had seen nan smack the dog with her stick. We made the heartbreaking decision to rehome the dog.

Nice to know though that there are still lovely people out there watching out for their neighbours.
Good luck, and thank you Flowers

Honeyroar · 14/01/2019 23:13

Do you think you would take him on if you were ever offered him? A lot of our dogs have just come into our lives in this kind of way.

animallikeyou · 14/01/2019 23:18

My lab used to be able to open and close doors.

LucyAutumn · 14/01/2019 23:26

Well done OP, you and your DH have handled this so well Cake

covetingthepreciousthings · 14/01/2019 23:30

This is a lovely (but sad) thread to read through.

Well done OP (and your DH) for trying to solve the puzzle & help the old lady.

I hope she can get some more support, it does sound like she shouldn't be living alone anymore Sad

FrenchSchnoodle · 14/01/2019 23:37

Fab thread. You and your DH sound like lovely people. I would definitely have loved to keep Chester and would have had him in the car and down to Pets at home trying out dog beds for size. That said it does sound as if he's looked after and thr lady needs him for company.

Fireandflames666 · 14/01/2019 23:43

"he was a Good Dog. oh, wait. he also once peed on a corpse, but that’s another story"

I'm sorry what?. Please elaborate 😅😜

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 15/01/2019 00:00

That’s is so awful and sad Alan that poor dog it must have been so bewildered as to why his once loving owner had started to hit her Sad I know it must have been a hard decision but you really did the right thing. A very similar thing happened to my friends mother when her dementia deteriorated she suddenly did not want her constant companion and shut him out the house in the cold and rain all night, her daughter found him the next day traumatised so yes OP please keep your eye on Chester just in case.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 15/01/2019 00:02

What a lovely yet bittersweet thread.

all I've done is sit on the sofa cuddling two dogs while making him run around like a headless chicken and make phone call after phone call

OP not true!!! You have been keeping all of MN in thrall and up to date all evening! Surely that counts for something.
