AIBU - Relocating to Lancashire

Hello, my DP and I have an almost one year old and we currently live in the South East. We are renting a one bedroom grotty flat and dreams of ever owning our own home in the SE seem pretty far away. We've been thinking that we'd be better off relocating to Lancashire as it's cheaper and seems nice. However, we don't really know Lancashire that well and so thought
I'd ask which areas of Lancashire are nice and which areas to avoid. We are currently looking at the Chorley/Preston/Wigan area but are open to some nice, family-friendly areas. We both work in healthcare so we think that it wouldn't be too difficult to find jobs in the area. We have saved up a good chunk of money and are planning to rent somewhere for 6 months or so and get a feel for the area and then buy somewhere after that.

So my AIBU is AIBU to want to relocate to Lancashire in the hopes of owning our own house?

Yes Romany that’s true about the train station.

x2boys · 15/01/2019 08:49

Carrs pasties are pretty good, and ye olde.pastie shop in Bolton is mighty fine.

Bowchicawowow · 15/01/2019 08:52

Agreed. Carrs pasties are excellent.

I personally find Preston depressing. Not very aesthetically pleasing. Consider Lancaster/ the Lune Valley. Close to Yorkshire, Cumbria/Lake district AND a short journey to the coast. Lovely Georgian architecture and rich history and culture.

I think you need to do a few iterations - 1) see where you can afford/looks nice, 2) see where the jobs are, 3) think about the commute - the rail network is awesome, but some lines lead to liverpool/southport, others to Manchester/wigan/Preston. You don't want to end up living on one line and needing the other to commute.

Burscough is nice. Pretty large village, canals, supermarkets, pubs, rail and bus connections. www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/Burscough.html

Proper pies and pasties are from Greenhoughs pronounced greenhouches.
Some great houses for sale in Leigh and Atherton at the moment.

x2boys · 15/01/2019 17:33

Do you mean Greenhalghes Romany?

ErrolTheDragon · 15/01/2019 17:37

Or even, 'Greenhalgh's Craft Bakery'.

(They do lovely cheesy topped bread btw. )

RomanyRoots · 15/01/2019 17:40

Yep, ignore my bad spelling, just went in for a cheese and onion, earlier Grin

x2boys · 15/01/2019 17:48

Every Greenhalgh I have known(including family) pronounce it Greenhalsh

ErrolTheDragon · 15/01/2019 17:52

Probably depends on how much pie you have in your mouth when you say it.Grin

RomanyRoots · 15/01/2019 17:53

That's interesting x2boys, I've only ever heard it pronounced "Greenhouches"

RomanyRoots · 15/01/2019 17:53

Ha Ha Grin

pootleposeyperkin · 15/01/2019 17:53

It's Green - halsh

MissMarplesKnitting · 15/01/2019 17:54

Greenhalghs mushroom soup is the BEST. Cheese topped barmcake and hot soup.... or just take a carton home. Yum.

I can take or leave a pie. I'm clearly not a true Lancy lass.

x2boys · 15/01/2019 18:00

Maybe different towns pronounce it differently I knew a few people at school.in Bury with the last name Greenhalgh.and the all pronounced it Greenhalsh , and I have in laws with the Name they also pronounce it Geenhalsh

Bowchicawowow · 15/01/2019 18:10

MissMarplesKnitting · 15/01/2019 18:17

Green-halshes for me too.

wafflethewonderdog · 15/01/2019 18:20

@Bowchicawowow
Me too 😂
DH is from St. Helens and he says Greenalls. Causes many a disagreement in our house 😂😂

CurbsideProphet · 15/01/2019 18:22

@Rmivuxg we live in a village between Preston and Chorley. I used to live in the SE and could never have afforded to buy a house. However, we couldn't live here without cars, as public transport is ropey with the bus service under threat.

I have relatives in a lovely care home in one of the towns mentioned, so I can PM you the name if you like Smile

CowJumping · 15/01/2019 18:25

Well, I remember when Gregg's was Birketts.

And now they do cappucinos

x2boys · 15/01/2019 18:26

And we have Pound Bakeries!

hennaoj · 15/01/2019 18:28

Avoid Buckshaw Village, it's overpriced, full of Swingers and people in exec cars who drive way too fast. My husband used to work in an office at Buckshaw and its become a sprawling estate with nothing for teenagers to do. The local pub is known as the 'Whore horse'. Near Worden park in Leyland is nice and there are some lovely parts of Wigan. I've found most people in Wigan to be more genuine, friendlier and tolerant of chidlren with Autism than people in 'posher' areas.

NC4Now · 15/01/2019 18:56

Never mind Pound Bakery. What about Bargain Booze?

Or if you live in a posh bit, like me - Booths.

Rmivuxg · 15/01/2019 19:31

Thank you for all your help and suggestions, definitely building up a better picture! You've given us lots to think about, particularly issues with public transport and schools. You're all stars, thank you Grin
