AIBU - Relocating to Lancashire

Hello, my DP and I have an almost one year old and we currently live in the South East. We are renting a one bedroom grotty flat and dreams of ever owning our own home in the SE seem pretty far away. We've been thinking that we'd be better off relocating to Lancashire as it's cheaper and seems nice. However, we don't really know Lancashire that well and so thought
I'd ask which areas of Lancashire are nice and which areas to avoid. We are currently looking at the Chorley/Preston/Wigan area but are open to some nice, family-friendly areas. We both work in healthcare so we think that it wouldn't be too difficult to find jobs in the area. We have saved up a good chunk of money and are planning to rent somewhere for 6 months or so and get a feel for the area and then buy somewhere after that.

So my AIBU is AIBU to want to relocate to Lancashire in the hopes of owning our own house?

Come to the North, but don't tell everyone down there!

Busy cities Like Leeds & Sheffield have marvellous countryside on their doorstep, and really affordable housing . Cheap trains to that London as well if the mood takes you!

Lancashire is becoming very popular as Manchester looks like usurping Birmingham as the countries ' Second City' . A great pace to have a trip into if you settle in one of the smaller towns around it.

I don't really see any benefits of living down south if just for the sake of it. London obviously has industries and careers you won't find anywhere else, but you don't seem to fit into that bracket.

Come on up, I'll put the kettle on for a brew!

OP

Has anyone told you about factory shops yet?

They tend to be more discount shops than true factory shops these days but the occasional true factory shops do exist.

tranqility you forgot to say that locally we have 2 Booths (Lytham and one in St Annes..... i prefer St Annes one).
Lytham is far too overpriced for me.... get more for your money in St Annes along with bigger gardens Smile

tranquilitybasehotel · 17/01/2019 17:39

Minionsrule yes I agree if I was buying here now (bought our house in lytham 16 years ago) I would live in st Anne's. When we down size I wouldn't mind moving to heyhouses area or near old links golf club Smile

A little update in case anyone cares - we went to the Chorley/Preston/Lytham area to view some houses. We found a house in a village just outside Chorley, we move in in a month!

Thanks for the update OP - I always wonder what happens to people in threads like this

Boundaryfence · 09/02/2019 12:18

Wonderful to hear you’re moving up here. I live a couple of miles from Chorley. I hope you’ll be very happy.
As a previous poster said, I’ll get the kettle on 😀

Oh, that's lovely news! I didn't add any suggestions last time because my ideas had already been listed.
Come back and let us know how you get on. Good luck with the move. ☕🍰

Bowchicawowow · 09/02/2019 12:44

Great news. Good luck in your new home.

pootleposeyperkin · 09/02/2019 12:47

Good luck ! Adlington ? Coppull ? Charnock ? Whittle ?

Rmivuxg · 09/02/2019 16:28

Yep, you got it, we're moving to Whittle

Op, you’ve chosen well, Whittle is a very nice and quiet place to live. It’s got great proximity to motorways - M6, M61 and M65 are all within 2 - 3 miles.
Supermarkets - Asda, Tesco and Aldi are only a couple of miles away and Booths, about 3 miles away in Chorley.
Preston city centre with M&S etc is about 15 mins drive.
Hope you’ll settle well and be very happy living there.
