AIBU - Relocating to Lancashire

Hello, my DP and I have an almost one year old and we currently live in the South East. We are renting a one bedroom grotty flat and dreams of ever owning our own home in the SE seem pretty far away. We've been thinking that we'd be better off relocating to Lancashire as it's cheaper and seems nice. However, we don't really know Lancashire that well and so thought
I'd ask which areas of Lancashire are nice and which areas to avoid. We are currently looking at the Chorley/Preston/Wigan area but are open to some nice, family-friendly areas. We both work in healthcare so we think that it wouldn't be too difficult to find jobs in the area. We have saved up a good chunk of money and are planning to rent somewhere for 6 months or so and get a feel for the area and then buy somewhere after that.

So my AIBU is AIBU to want to relocate to Lancashire in the hopes of owning our own house?

It doesn't rain all the time at all I'm from Bury but now live in Bolton it was so hot last summer we had raging tired on the moors Shock although actually Bolton and Bury are classed as Greater Manchester not Lancashire , we seem to avoid a lot of the worst weather too maybe because of the penines? On minimum wage jobs though I still think you would struggle to afford a mortgage .

x2boys · 14/01/2019 14:14

Actually a two bed terrace would be cheaper than than that Mashed Potatoe I rented a large there bed semi with garden a couple of years ago for £670 depends whereabouts of course I expect Harwood, Bromley cross Egerton etc would be more expensive than Great lever and Farnworth .

Escapenextyear · 14/01/2019 14:29

Parbold and Wrightington near Wigan are lovely .
Euxton and Buckshaw Village also nice although BV is a new, man made village.
Standish also has nice parts and affordable.

TornFromTheInside · 14/01/2019 14:51

I can confirm that it does not rain all the time in Lancashire...

According to Google, there was an afternoon in 1951 when the sun threatened to come out.
Then it snowed.

Kazzyhoward · 14/01/2019 14:57

How about somewhere around Morecambe Bay - there are 3 major hospitals (Lancaster, Kendal and Barrow), and a very good choice of property. You have the bigger towns of Lancaster and Kendal, and also lots of smaller towns/big villages such as Carnforth & Ulverston. Close to the M6. Some seaside places too - bigger towns like Morecambe or smaller ones like Grange or even smaller like Arnside/Silverdale. A very good mix of cheap/expensive properties and some very good schools too!

x2boys · 14/01/2019 14:59

Raging fires* on the moors ffs .

cptart2 · 14/01/2019 15:02

I live in Hutton, South Ribble just outside of Preston. Semi rural area, into the city in ten minutes, the coast in half an hour or less and Manchester/Liverpool in an hour. Good schools, great quality of life.

shpoot · 14/01/2019 15:03

I second Morecambe Bay. Have a look at Heysham and Hest Bank areas

TornFromTheInside · 14/01/2019 15:10

The 'raging fires on the moors' were largely man made and a cunning ploy by the Lancashire tourism authority to draw visitors from Yarkshire where thi 'ave ne'er sin fire!

Escapenextyear · 14/01/2019 15:24

Plus we have the best pies in lancashire

JacquesHammer · 14/01/2019 15:24

Torn I know you were joking but we had awful moor fires in West Yorkshire at the same time.

My friend lost her full livery yard including several of her horses.

TornFromTheInside · 14/01/2019 15:26

I know, I am very well acquainted with Saddleworth! Very well indeed.

Honeyroar · 14/01/2019 15:42

Jaques that's awful about the livery yard. I never heard that, despite living in one of the areas extremely affected by the fires. 😞

JacquesHammer · 14/01/2019 15:58

Honey I know Sad

I wonder if we’re quite close - have we spoken before? Fires on CM?

GeorgeTheHippo · 14/01/2019 15:59

"It's not raining today"

It was yesterday, though 😀

Ollivander84 · 14/01/2019 16:04

I live in preston but keep my horse in Heapey - areas around Heapey are lovely but more expensive. Preston is fine, it has it's rough areas like anywhere

Hobbesmanc · 14/01/2019 16:06

Deffo move north. I run a Care agency and there are plenty of vacancies although nearly all at minimum wage. However there are more complex community roles all over paying 9-9.50 an hour if you have the right skills or are flexible around training and travel.

I do think a car is pretty essential though as outside of Gt Manchester public transport especially at night and weekends is crap.

I'd look at the Happy Valley- Littleborough through to Hebden Bridge. Todmorden is a hidden gem. Gorgeous setting in the valley- direct trains to Manchester. Great pubs and restaurants, awesome market and a slightly alternative vibe- and cheaper than Hebden. There's 3-4 bed character terrace houses for less than 600 per month. (check flood risk) Tod aslo has a couple of supermarkets and decent schools.

x2boys · 14/01/2019 16:20

Do you want to hear my Wigan jokes Torn?Grin

Kariana · 14/01/2019 16:29

Very sensible, I'd say go for it. I often wonder why more people don't do this but instead stay put and complain about living in poverty when they could just relocate. I know not everyone can but I'm talking about those who can but just can't conceive of the idea of living north of Birmingham. It's wonderful up North.

Do avoid Blackpool at all costs though. It's not a nice place.

Redglitter · 14/01/2019 16:32

Lytham St. Annes is one of my favourite places in the UK. I would love to live there

Me too 😊

trevthecat · 14/01/2019 16:39

Look at Lytham or St Anne's. Lytham is expensive but so lovely. I'm born and bred Lytham and although we recently moved to Blackpool for a much bigger house my children are still at school in Lytham. The schools are all really good

TwoleftUggs · 14/01/2019 16:40

Ormskirk not a bad location for motorways, and plenty of carehomes and a hospital too, but you’d struggle to find affordable housing I think. Southport is a better bet. Or Burscough which is just north of Ormskirk.
Lytham is really lovely but it just seem to take so long to get anywhere from there.
