AIBU - Relocating to Lancashire

Hello, my DP and I have an almost one year old and we currently live in the South East. We are renting a one bedroom grotty flat and dreams of ever owning our own home in the SE seem pretty far away. We've been thinking that we'd be better off relocating to Lancashire as it's cheaper and seems nice. However, we don't really know Lancashire that well and so thought
I'd ask which areas of Lancashire are nice and which areas to avoid. We are currently looking at the Chorley/Preston/Wigan area but are open to some nice, family-friendly areas. We both work in healthcare so we think that it wouldn't be too difficult to find jobs in the area. We have saved up a good chunk of money and are planning to rent somewhere for 6 months or so and get a feel for the area and then buy somewhere after that.

So my AIBU is AIBU to want to relocate to Lancashire in the hopes of owning our own house?

The rainfall isn't that bad on the coastal plain - and it's not as cold here as the other side of the Pennines. I used to live in Thirsk, the frosts were much earlier there than here.

I would recommend my area of West Yorkshire on the Lancashire border but it's actually got mega expensive over the last 10 years! (Colne Valley)

Is the Pope Catholic?
Does Uncle Joe have minty balls?

Is the Pope Catholic?

Not necessarily! Grin

I'm in Lancashire, it's quite deprived in some areas.
The countryside is quite expensive compared to the towns, and of course longer commute if you work in a city or large town.
It's like anywhere, do your homework. Some areas schools are easy to gain places, others it depends on how many dc were christened in the Parish and church attendance. Although as most schools are faith, the less popular are easy to gain.
Secondary can be harder depending where you live.
Where we are there aren't any outstanding schools, lots of Academies and area has high level of pp/fsm.

This is a little bit over your budget and in a nice area.

My dd attends a specialist school in Manchester.
She came home and said her friends were teaching her their languages, Japanese, Chinese, Turkish, Russian, etc.
I said what are you teaching them she said Wiganese and how to eat a pie. Grin

Lancashire = God's own country.

Yorkshire = God's own county. Take a look here too Smile

Bowchicawowow · 14/01/2019 17:22

For future reference the best pies in not just Wigan but the whole of the UK are Galloways.

RomanyRoots · 14/01/2019 17:23

Yorkshire is only there to keep the worst weather off Lancashire. Grin

Wiganers are called Pie Eaters, not because of all the pie shops, but because they were the first to eat humble pie and go back to work during the general strike.

Bowchicawowow · 14/01/2019 17:27

They do eat a lot of pies though and how do you explain lobby gobblers?

RomanyRoots · 14/01/2019 17:28

Now your talking, my ds1 lives in lobby gobbling territory.
Can't beat a good lobby for Monday tea.

x2boys · 14/01/2019 17:31

If you move to.Lancashire/Greater Manchester Op.you will have to get used to our local delicacies such as chip's and gravy/curry sauce ,a pie barm, chip buttie etc

NC4Now · 14/01/2019 17:33

Ignore what PP says about Preston. It’s on the up.
Penwortham is lovely and there are affordable parts. Good chippies too.

NC4Now · 14/01/2019 17:38

For example - this is a nice area, walkable to the city centre and train station, close to parks and good schools, and the houses are really roomy.

I'm in Wigan on the Lancashire border. Great family area, lovely houses, good schools, plenty to do for families locally and within a short drive and some lovely eating out places for couples.
PM me if I can answer any questions x

RomanyRoots · 14/01/2019 17:52

Or of course a Wigan Kebab. A pie in a barm. Grin

RomanyRoots · 14/01/2019 18:10

Oh, have just thought if you want childcare and holiday clubs, in Wigan as long as they are school age you can get it from about £5 per day at one place.

stevie69 · 14/01/2019 18:19

Yorkshire is only there to keep the worst weather off Lancashire

We can start the Wars of the Roses all over again Grin

Too expensive???

That amount would just get you a room in a shared house here;!

A bit north of Watford that is;(
