Roast potatoes?

Roast meat
Roast potatoes
Veg 1
Veg 2
Stuffing
Yorkshire puddings

Is what makes a roast dinner imo.

Roast meat
Mash
Veg in w/e quantities
Maybe Yorkshire pudding/stuffing

Aibu to think this is not a roast dinner?

Cauliflower cheese

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 13/01/2019 15:09

Yabu the roast applies to the meat. Mash is a fine substitute

LAlady · 13/01/2019 15:11

A roast without roast potatoes in my house, wouldn't be a proper roast. (I speak for my DH & two teens. I personally don't care !).

Sunflowermuma · 13/01/2019 15:11

Husband and I much prefer mash to roast potatoes

We usually have
Meat
Mashed potato
Mashed swede and carrot
Cheesy leeks or broccoli
Peas
Parsnip
Yorkshire puddings

MeredithGrey1 · 13/01/2019 15:12

I’d say to call it a roast you need (minimum)
Roast meat
Some sort of potato
Veg
Gravy

Dextrodependant · 13/01/2019 15:13

I would have mash WITH roast potatoes, it is not acceptable to have mash INSTEAD OF roast potatoes.

sashh · 13/01/2019 15:13

In my house you need roast and mashed potatoes. Sometimes parsnip and potatoes mashed with garlic and roasts.

Eliza9917 · 13/01/2019 15:14

Until I met dp I'd never had cauliflower cheese with a roast. Gravy and cheese doesn't mix imo. I've made it and had it since but I still don't think cheese and gravy should be on the same plate.

I've never had mash with a roast dinner either.

I used to love going to my aunt’s for Sunday lunch as she would do roast potatoes AND mash.

Newsername · 13/01/2019 15:15

Your meat has to be roasted and you need a textured carbohydrate for a crunch, and that’s in form of a roast potato. Otherwise it’s just sloppy slop.

Oblomov19 · 13/01/2019 15:18

Canadians don't do roast potatoes. They do mash and rice. I was shocked. Or they didn't when I was there. I was shocked.

spudlet7 · 13/01/2019 15:18

Has to be roast meat and roast potatoes to make it a roast dinner. No Yorkshires or no stuffing is crap but still a roast

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 13/01/2019 15:18

Roast potatoes are a must and if we are having lamb I like gratin potatoes. My friends family have baked beans with their roast which is the most blrugh thing of all time

BeanTownNancy · 13/01/2019 15:20

I could substitute different meat in a roast (I've pressure cooked the meat before to get it lovely and juicy instead of roasting) but for me what makes it a "roast" is the roast potatoes. Else it's "roast chicken and mash", not "a roast dinner".

PurpleWithRed · 13/01/2019 15:21

Minimum Roast = roast meat + roast potatoes + gravy. Non negotiable. Also Yorkies if the meat is beef.

NameChangeNugget · 13/01/2019 15:25

Never heard of mash on a roast before. May try that

Eliza9917 · 13/01/2019 15:30

@jebuschristchocolatebar That is disgusting. Beans and gravy should not mix.

Fifthtimelucky · 13/01/2019 15:31

Stuffing is only necessary if it's chicken or turkey.
Yorkshire puddings are only necessary if it's beef (though obviously desirable with any roast).
I would never roast a joint without roasting potatoes too, but I think the only true essentials are roast meat of some kind, plus proper gravy.

Someaddedsugar · 13/01/2019 15:32

We have both, and Yorkshire puddings - I think those three make it a roast! Still can’t get away with the though of cauliflower cheese though - I agree without cheese and gravy not mixing!

cariadlet · 13/01/2019 15:35

I don't think meat is essential for a roast dinner, but it's not a proper roast dinner without roast potatoes. Yorkshire pudding and stuffing are yummy, but not essential.

Cauliflower cheese is just plain weird. I've never heard of anyone in RL having roast dinner with cauliflower cheese.

AllMYSmellySocks · 13/01/2019 15:35

Mash is fine as a sub for roast potatoes - don't think I could handle roast and mash personally. As long as there's roast meat, gravy and veg I count it.

AllMYSmellySocks · 13/01/2019 15:37

Cauliflower cheese is just plain weird. I've never heard of anyone in RL having roast dinner with cauliflower cheese.

Lots of people (and pubs) do cauliflower cheese with roasts.

Littlelambpeep · 13/01/2019 15:37

Up for me it's having a decent quality meat roasted and mash or roast (but really roast spud make a real dinner for me)

PippilottaLongstocking · 13/01/2019 15:43

Mash if accept is everything else was roast (not sure if it’s the norm but we roast our veg too)

Boiled potatoes however would be completely unacceptable
