Roast potatoes?

Roast meat
Roast potatoes
Veg 1
Veg 2
Stuffing
Yorkshire puddings

Is what makes a roast dinner imo.

Roast meat
Mash
Veg in w/e quantities
Maybe Yorkshire pudding/stuffing

Aibu to think this is not a roast dinner?

Surely a "roast" without "roast" potatoes is what I would call meat and 2 veg? I usually aim for four or five veg. That doesn't normally refer to roasted veg does it, more like mash or boiled peas or carrots kind of veg?

HighwayDragon1 · 13/01/2019 18:45

We've just had

Roast chicken
2 x veg (peas and carrots)
Yorkies
Roast potatoes
Stuffing
Gravy

We always have this on a Sunday!

Thisgirlcant · 13/01/2019 19:17

A roast dinner in our house has meat, mash, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire puddings, peas and carrots, stuffing and nice thick gravy made the roux way, it's a must!

If I eat out the main thing I would miss would be Yorkshire puddings and mash.

delboysskinandblister · 13/01/2019 19:25

Ok. Back from Yorkshire pudding world, I have made it but it was too greasy. Still got eaten though Smile

Can someone tell the person who served the roast chicken that it does not come with cress??! Hmm

Ok.
Easiest Yorkshire pudding recipe.
This will do a big boat one (like my earlier picture) or 12 baby puddings ( done in a Yorkshire pudding tin/bun tin NOT muffin tin). It needs to be a metal tin. Not silicone. Metal. I use a blue and white enamel roasting tin for making mine . Check them out on eBay - they are cheap, old fashioned and a multi use great addition to your kitchen.

I put a large plastic jug on my digital scales. Then I add

110g plain flour
100 ml milk
2 large eggs (extra large if poss)
10ml cold water
Salt & pepper.

Mix it all together.

Turn your oven up to 230c fan assisted.
Put your tin in with (preferably) dripping in. If not dripping then oil which has a high smoke point - olive is fine but NOT EVER extra virgin olive oil. There needs to be enough fat for a thin layer over the bottom of the tin, large or bun. Not loads though - you don’t want it swimming.
Leave tin in oven fir 10 mins.
Take tin out of oven, and pour in your batter.
Stick tin back in oven (bottom/middle shelf but make sure there isn’t a shelf too close above it - these buggers are going to be big! )

Check after 15 mins. It should be about ready depending on the colour you like it. If you are doing little ones - check after 11-12 mins.

Serve with lashings of great gravy.
I want pictures next week please!!!

Cauliflower cheese with roast beef is the most delicious thing ever. Rich cheese sauce and rich beef gravy, a match made in heaven! Not too fussed on what potatoes but would make roast ones 90% of the time.

Mountainsoutofmolehills · 13/01/2019 22:58

roast poatoes

JaceLancs · 13/01/2019 23:08

Nobody in my house likes potatoes roasted or otherwise
We have roast meat or poultry
Sweet potato butternut squash mash
Cauliflower cheese
At least 3 other veg sometimes up to 5!
Sometimes roast parsnips
Sometimes mashed swede or carrot
Stuffing with poultry

delboysskinandblister · 14/01/2019 18:13

@Fenellasredvelvetdress

Thank you so much!!! This is fab. I will definitely bake this. I did use a metal enamelled roaster but it was swimming in oil. The recipe i used called for 5oz ?? I also didn't have the oven up high enough (210deg). I will have to go shopping for dripping. Smile.

FenellasRedVelvetDress thank you! Shame I'm going away this weekend, I'll have to be patient, and wait another week before trying to replicate that beauty.

NicolaStart · 16/01/2019 21:33

We often do mash and roast potatoes
Yorkshires only with beef.
Never cauliflower cheese with a roast.
Maybe leeks in white sauce with lamb.

But if there is roast meat it is a roast dinner.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 16/01/2019 21:41

Canadians don't do roast potatoes. They do mash and rice. I was shocked. Or they didn't when I was there. I was shocked.

I'd be shocked too! If my Canadian Mother had served that, I'd have disowned myself!

SarfE4sticated · 16/01/2019 21:48

two things from me,

  1. an ex of mine's aged mum used to cook the meat the day before, so there would be a roast dinner with cold meat. Very strange IMHO.
  1. best chicken gravy recipe from Nigel Slater chicken with roast onion and thyme gravy

You have all inspired me to make cauliflower cheese now! I'm salivating at 9.50pm on a Wednesday night!
