Roast potatoes?

Roast meat
Roast potatoes
Veg 1
Veg 2
Stuffing
Yorkshire puddings

Is what makes a roast dinner imo.

Roast meat
Mash
Veg in w/e quantities
Maybe Yorkshire pudding/stuffing

Aibu to think this is not a roast dinner?

Minimum for it to be called a roast dinner would be roast meat, roast potatoes, at least one vegetable, gravy, often a sauce such as apple or redcurrant.
Extra vegetables are good, but not essential, parsnips are a frequent choice as they can be roasted with the potatoes, cabbage is a good additional vegetable as it cooks quickly. I wouldn't normally do cauliflower cheese with a roast.
I only make Yorkshire pudding with beef.

Heifer · 13/01/2019 16:58

A roast dinner without both roast meat and roast potatoes is just dinner in my view - Do love roasties in this house though :-)

FenellasRedVelvetDress · 13/01/2019 17:00

In order for it to be a roast dinner you need :
Roasted meat
Roast potatoes
And Yorkshire pudding.

I do not understand this view that Yorkshire pudding should only be served with roast beef. Who decided this? It wasn’t decided by us Yorkshire people- we have it with every meat. I don’t know anybody who only puts Yorkshire’s with beef. The ONLY requirement for serving Yorkshire’s is a good gravy.
So to me, it isn’t a roast dinner without a Yorkshire pudding.

My husband and children would cry if they didn't get roast potatoes with their roast!

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 13/01/2019 17:07

Never heard of mash on a roast? Confused

Got to be mash and roasties, a roast meat and Yorkshire pud with two types of veg. Stuffing if the meat is a bird. Oh and gravy of course.

I couldn't contemplate a roast dinner with boiled, skin on potatoes. Vile. As is peas or sweetcorn.

itssquidstella · 13/01/2019 17:16

Lol @Rubusfruticosus boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew

itssquidstella · 13/01/2019 17:17

We've just had an exquisite roast:

Roast pork, crackling and apple sauce (or grain mustard)
Roast potatoes
Roast carrots and parsnips
Steamed tender stem broccoli
Stuffing balls
Lashings of gravy

Imsosorryalan1 · 13/01/2019 17:24

Roasted meat, roasted potatoes, roasted parsnips, tonnes of veg and definitely NOT cauliflower cheese

delboysskinandblister · 13/01/2019 17:26

@Fenellasredvelvetdress

I've got my coat on, I'm the one coming up your road brandishing knife and fork salivating..

OP - Personally I'm with you. I mean what's the point of pre-heating the oven for the joint of meat or chicken and not doing roast potatoes, Yorkshire pud, roast parsnips, stuffing etc followed by using the rest of the oven heat by bunging in a crumble ?

I have seen cauli cheese on a roast, not in our house, but for me that's a whole separate meal.

However, there are the healthier ones in our house who would pot roast the meat and then serve mash and steamed veg and no gravy??. No pud. This is not what I call a roast!! That's just dinner.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/01/2019 17:28

To me, a roast needs roast meat, some sort of potatoes, at least 2 veg, and proper gravy, made in the roasting tin with all the juices, none of that granules shite.
And if it's beef, Yorkshire puds.

Purplejay · 13/01/2019 17:29

We call them gravy dinners.

It’s rare as I have been veggie now vegan that there is roast meat. Sometime pie, Yorkshire’s, meat or meat subs or sausages. Roast potatoes are occasional. There is always mash and 2 -4 veg. And Gravy 😀

Roast dinners growing up only occasionally had roast potatoes and only Yorkshire’s if there was beef.

pickingdaisies · 13/01/2019 17:32

Fenella, you have just made me feel very hungry. If I was given just that and a jug of gravy, I'd be happy. (Even happier with some beef and a few roasties!)

rugbychick1 · 13/01/2019 17:32

No way!

delboysskinandblister · 13/01/2019 17:33

fenella

Please may i have your entire yorkshire pudding recipe/oven temp. Mine tend to come out like Lincolnshire pudding Confused too much flour I think.

We are putting on the oven now for a chicken.

I must have this...

peachgreen · 13/01/2019 17:36

Roast dinners are overrated, whatever they come with. There. I said it.

ABoozedMoose · 13/01/2019 17:38

I was served a gravy-less roast in a pub once. Sad
I never went back there.

I'm not a massive cauliflower fan but cauliflower cheese is lovely with a roast (and I had some earlier with my roast at another pub and am still happily full) but I'd do broccoli cheese if I was actually cooking.

Eliza9917 · 13/01/2019 17:38

@ArcheryAnnie that sounds vile

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 13/01/2019 17:38

It's got to have a roast joint of meat that needs carving.
It can be mashed potatoes if it's roasted meat. We generally have both roast and mashed potatoes if there are a lot of people eating.

If it's a nut loaf or something else then the potatoes need to be roasted, roasted parsnips and cauliflower cheese are generally always had with the non roast meat options.

We always have gravy, stuffing, boiled carrots and a green veg. We mostly have Yorkshire puddings too but not if less people are eating.

Eliza9917 · 13/01/2019 17:39

@cowfacemonkey peas are favoured here. And sweetcorn

OP posts:
Eliza9917 · 13/01/2019 17:41

I know they tell you to cook the stuffing separately from the turkey or chicken, but you can transform a piece of meat with an appropriate stuffing.

Stuffing has to be paxo.

MeOldChina · 13/01/2019 17:41

Cauli cheese and gravy are a perfect combo. I'm quite easy osy about the nature of the potato, but it must be present.

DeRigueurMortis · 13/01/2019 17:42

For me it depends on what roast it is.

Common to all:

  • a good gravy
  • roast potatoes
  • mashed potatoes
  • Yorkshire puddings
  • carrot battons (not coins)

Plus.....

For beef:

  • cauliflower cheese
  • green beans/green cabbage
  • horseradish sauce

For chicken:

  • stuffing
  • bread sauce
  • tender-stem broccoli

For Lamb:

  • mint sauce
  • red current jelly
  • red cabbage

For pork:

  • apple sauce
  • stuffing
  • creamed spinach
SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 13/01/2019 17:47

Yorkshires with every meat, sometimes Yorkshires with pie in my family Blush

cricketballs3 · 13/01/2019 17:47

What is with cauliflower cheese and gravy? Wrong on so many levels!

Justkeeepsmiling · 13/01/2019 17:50

Surely a "roast" without "roast" potatoes is what I would call meat and 2 veg?
