Is what makes a roast dinner imo.

Roast meat

Definitely roast potatoes and roast chicken without bread sauce is a travesty.

my2bundles · 13/01/2019 16:16

The meat s the roast. We have it with mash, various vg, yorkshires and gravy. Roast turkey is my youngst favourite meal but he dosent like roast potatoes. It's still a roast.

itssquidstella · 13/01/2019 16:16

Roast meat
Roast potatoes
Stuffing
Gravy
Roast veg (carrots and parsnips)
Fresh veg (broccoli)
Yorkshire puddings if the meat is beef

Lovemusic33 · 13/01/2019 16:16

A roast must contain..

Roast potatoes
Meat
Veg
Yorkshire pudding

I wouldn’t settle for anything less, mashed potatoes instead or roast potatoes is just wrong.

DitheringBlidiot · 13/01/2019 16:21

A roast dinner without roast potatoes is a crying shame. When I was very poor, I would make “roast” dinners with the ‘roast’ element being the potatoes. Just potatoes, veg and gravy, maybe some 20p value stuffing! I still have it when I’m feeling sorry for myself.

Rubusfruticosus · 13/01/2019 16:23

We roast chicken with carrots, onions, garlic, sweet potato and cauliflower. That's what I call a roast dinner.

DitheringBlidiot · 13/01/2019 16:24

These days I throw caution to the wind and have Yorkshire puddings with any meat I choose

TeddybearBaby · 13/01/2019 16:26

I agree with you!! What a disappointment! I wouldn’t mind missing the stuffing but that’s all ☺️. Mmmm making roast beef and Yorkshire’s now 😋

RoseJam · 13/01/2019 16:26

Roast potatoes are the best part of a roast dinner.

And Yorkshires.

And gravy

callmekitten · 13/01/2019 16:27

I'm American and when I hear you guys talk about roast dinner, I think pot roast - meat (usually beef) onions, potatoes and carrots all roasted together. Sometimes the pan juices are made into gravy and sometimes not. There are variations but those are the basics. I will often roast some cabbage wedges with mine to up the vegetable content of the meal.

Rubusfruticosus · 13/01/2019 16:28

What's "taters", precious?

chemenger · 13/01/2019 16:28

Last year we were invited to a lovely Thanksgiving meal here in the USA, everything was delicious but no roast potatoes. I also went to a very posh fundraising Christmas lunch, all the trimmings except roast potatoes. Just not right. I’m not sure I’ve seen a proper roast potato here, except at the homes of other expats.

1hello2hello · 13/01/2019 16:38

Inlaw baked beans ? That can only be called an abomination.

luckylavender · 13/01/2019 16:42

Minimum for me, meat veg & potatoes. Roast pots extra. Don't eat gravy.

cricketballs3 · 13/01/2019 16:43

Sorry but lamb gravy has to be eaten with mash and mint sauce.

As much as I love roasters with beef I prefer plain boiled pots runs and hides

YouFellAsleep · 13/01/2019 16:43

Mint sauce, whatever the roast it has to have mint sauce Smile

Oh and mash to mop up the gravy and mint sauce!

ALongHardWinter · 13/01/2019 16:43

A roast dinner with no roast potatoes?! Shock That is outrageous. Roasted are my absolute favourite way of eating potatoes.

A roast dinner should have:-
Roast meat
Roast potatoes
Stuffing
Yorkshire puddings
Gravy
Vegetables (preferably peas,carrots,sprouts,cauliflower)
Bread sauce (yes,I know most people seem to hate it,but I love it)

I remember being given mashed potato as well as roast the first time I went to dinner with my future husband's (now ex) family. I thought Hmm.

cricketballs3 · 13/01/2019 16:47

Also have never understood the lack of gravy on meals! Gravy - got to be thick, meat juices with meats bits and bisto powder (not granules), none of this watery 'jus' shit

Food of the gods!

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 13/01/2019 16:48

A roast has to have roast veg
Meat with veg, mash etc is a cooked dinner

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 13/01/2019 16:48

1hello2hello
I'd agree, the first time I was offered them i thought they were joking and actually laughed. OH didn't know it wasn't a normal part of a roast until we met

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 13/01/2019 16:48

I think if the meat/meal alternative is roasted then it's a roast! Lots of different accompaniments due to personal choice - ours is mash as well as roast potatoes (kids don't like roast potatoes), some sort of gratin or cauliflower cheese and always Yorkshire puddings and stuffing, whatever it is! And veg usually broccoli and carrots at least as the kids won't eat anything else Hmm

coconutwheel · 13/01/2019 16:49

Cauliflower cheese and Yorkshire pudding only go with roast beef.

Littlepond · 13/01/2019 16:49

I had parsnips instead of potatoes today.

roundaboutthetown · 13/01/2019 16:51

Imvho, a roast is a colossal disappointment if it lacks roast potatoes, roast parsnips and huge quantities of gravy.

ReanimatedSGB · 13/01/2019 16:53

Toby carveries offer macaroni cheese with your roast. NOt convinced.
