To find it annoying how Kate (Duchess of Cambridge) is referred to as Catherine?

I read an interview with James Middleton today in which he referred to his sister as Catherine rather than Kate. Prince William also calls her Catherine in interviews.

I don't know why, but I find it mildly grating that since she got together with Prince William, her family and friends have suddenly begun referring to her by a different, longer version of her first name - especially when they presumably always called her Kate before, still do in private and everybody else refers to her as Kate anyway.

It just seems very contrived and a little pretentious or something I suppose. AIBU to wonder why Prince William and her family can't just call her Kate in public?

OP* my sister is called Catherine.

My 5 siblings and I all call her Catherine sometimes, and other times we call her Katie.

It's not that unusual. I think you are just looking to have a little gripe about her, which is fine, but is this really all you can come up with?

Dongdingdong · 12/01/2019 17:36

Cathy, Kat or Kath would be have been unspeakable in those circles (think v upper class public girls boarding school, in fact it’s where Eugenie and Beatrice were schooled).

Kate’s not exactly a “posh” name either is it Orange? And if it is, I wonder why the royal family would feel the need to no longer use it in favour of Catherine?

A very simple Google search would have saved you some embarrassment, robininbrum.
This is the first hit:

Daisy and Peggy = Margaret. It seems like there should be a long explanation for Daisy, but it's as simple as this: The French word for "daisy" is "marguerite." As for Peggy? Well, Margaret was shorted to nicknames like Meg or Meggy, and the rhyming nickname trend turned Meggy into Peggy.

You thought wrong actually - I think Kate is great. I also set up a thread defending Meghan fairly recently when all those rumours were coming out in the press, but it subsequently turned nasty thanks to some other posters and was therefore deleted.

@Dongdingdong

Ummm no @robininbrum - actually Peggy is a short form of Margaret. Next time do your research before needlessly flaming another poster, eh?*

Well, that other poster (chanelplease) suggested they were totally different names too! Confused

Chanelplease said...

Thomas and Tommy and Tom are the same name though. Kate sounds completely different to Catherine. If her friends called her Cathy and any official reference was Catherine I could see your point. It'd be like being called Peggy and suddenly everyone calling you Margaret.

So she suggested Peggy and Margaret are totally different names!

So why are you not chastising chanelplease as she got it 'wrong' too?!

Or do you only slag off people who are disagreeing with you eh? Hmm

Anyway, maybe YOU should do your research and read posts properly before needlessly slagging ME off eh? Wink

robininbrum · 12/01/2019 17:45

Same to you @Dancingwithmyself

Why don't you have a go at chanelplease too? SHE said Margaret and Peggy were totally different names too!

Again, obviously just like to try and chastise people who disagree with you.

Upshot is, it beggars belief that anyone who thinks KATE is not short for CATHERINE, claims they KNEW ALL ALONG that Peggy is short for Margaret ...

Wink

Agree with this. Great that some people have such blessed lives that all they have to get stressed about is people calling Kate Middleton CATHERINE. Wink

crispysausagerolls · 12/01/2019 17:50

I find it much more irritating that the press refer to her as “Kate Middleton” rather than “the Duchess of Cambridge”

Queenisabella · 12/01/2019 17:50

I was christened Isabella. My family call me Bella, but my parents and siblings would refer to me as Isabella. I was called Izzy at primary school and Isabelle at secondary. I am mostly Isabelle at work, a few friends still refer to me as Izzy. But I think my family and DH if they ever had occasion to make reference to me formally eg; in an interview would call me Isabella

On this occasion, I would recommend being the bigger poster and owning this one, Robin. There's no shame in being wrong, especially when the subject being discussed kinda is a bit of a head scratcher in the first place.

Dongdingdong · 12/01/2019 17:52

@robininbrum oh dear - you’ve missed the point again I’m afraid. Chanel was making the point that some shortenings sound very similar to the longer names - Tommy for Thomas, Phil for Philip or Cathy for Catherine for example.

By contrast, Kate sounds like a completely different name to Catherine (the first syllable isn’t even pronounced the same) as Peggy does to Margaret.

Do you really think she could have coincidentally chosen two random names like Peggy and Margaret which then happen by some miraculous coincidence to be linked? Come off it.

@butchyrestingface

As I said, I accept I am wrong, but what pisses me off is that the poster chanelplease was wrong too. Yet a couple of posters are having a go at ME about it, but not her!

Cherry picking the scolding to only have a go at people who disagree with them.

Lame, and very bad form.

Molakai · 12/01/2019 17:53

Where are you getting the idea that the RF have "felt the need" to anything? Catherine is her name and Kate is a diminutive that she is also known by.

You acknowledged earlier that she is called both names (and has been since before the RF)

When referring to someone publicly it is much more likely that someone would chose to use the full version not a shortened version. It's not a weird thing only done by the RF.

robininbrum · 12/01/2019 17:54

WTF are you on about ? Chanel was clearly saying peggy and margaret are different names.

robininbrum · 12/01/2019 17:56

You just want to argue and cause bad feeling @Dongdingdong and that is why you started this thread in the first place.

You're wrong. And also wrong about Kate.

KATE is a shortened version of CATHERINE.

Don't try and project your failings onto me.

Molakai · 12/01/2019 17:56

Yes OP.
I disagreed with Chanel's point but agree totally that she knew that Peggy is another form of Margaret

robininbrum · 12/01/2019 17:57

I am done with you now, you are pissing me right off. dingdong

I am hiding the thread now before I say something that gets me banned.

You are 100 shades of wrong though.

Dongdingdong · 12/01/2019 17:58

Lame, and very bad form.

Flaming another poster is what’s bad form - especially when you have no idea what you’re talking about.

As for asking “WTF am I on about”, my previous post is extremely clear.

Sorry @whosafraidofabigduckfart - I wasn’t aware we were only allowed to post about deadly serious topics on MN. Why click on the thread in the first place if it’s not of interest?

Hi Kate! If it annoys you so much, just talk to them about it ffs.
