To find it annoying how Kate (Duchess of Cambridge) is referred to as Catherine?

I read an interview with James Middleton today in which he referred to his sister as Catherine rather than Kate. Prince William also calls her Catherine in interviews.

I don't know why, but I find it mildly grating that since she got together with Prince William, her family and friends have suddenly begun referring to her by a different, longer version of her first name - especially when they presumably always called her Kate before, still do in private and everybody else refers to her as Kate anyway.

It just seems very contrived and a little pretentious or something I suppose. AIBU to wonder why Prince William and her family can't just call her Kate in public?

WTF?

I have a colleague that sometimes I call Beatrice. Sometimes I call her Bea.

Does it even matter?

Molakai · 12/01/2019 13:20

How on earth do you know what her family call her / have called her in private? And why would you give a shit?

WillBendTheKnee4Jon · 12/01/2019 13:21

I bet she calls him Will or Billy Big Bollocks indoors but William in public.

Amanduh · 12/01/2019 13:22

Imagine calling someone... by.. their... NAME!! 😱

Sparklesocks · 12/01/2019 13:23

I couldn’t muster up the energy to care about what her friends and family choose to call her, it has no impact on my life in any way..

steff13 · 12/01/2019 13:23

You're annoyed by her family calling her by her given name?

DowntonCrabby · 12/01/2019 13:23

I’d always assumed it was the public/media who had christened her Kate and that she’d always been Catherine to family and friends.

Biggles398 · 12/01/2019 13:23

I thought she was always a Catherine and it is just the press that started calling her Kate!!

RobinHumphries · 12/01/2019 13:24

Actually she has always been known as Catherine it’s the media that nicknamed her Kate

Amanduh · 12/01/2019 13:24

Oh and her friends and family are always known to have called her Catherine. People in her village etc and family friends call her that. Apparently anyone didn’t call her Kate until she went to uni. So 🤷🏼‍♀️

ChippyMinton · 12/01/2019 13:25

It’s her name, why wouldn’t they use it?

RightOcciputAnterior · 12/01/2019 13:25

I've read somewhere that she is known as Catherine to family and friends. It's just the media which christened her Kate.

waxy1 · 12/01/2019 13:25

Call her Nellie if it makes you feel better.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 12/01/2019 13:25

Because she will be Queen Catherine. Not Queen Kate. All the historical footage of them referring to her will reflect this. They will have been advised to call her by the name that will be her title. You don’t expect Philip to refer to “liz” do you?

LostInShoebiz · 12/01/2019 13:25

She only started being Kate for the sake of shorter, snappier headlines.

Do you think everyone calls William “Wills” too?

Clawdy · 12/01/2019 13:25

A friend's daughter was at uni with them both and said everyone called her Kate, including William.

robininbrum · 12/01/2019 13:25

It's her name! Confused

What a bizarre thing to get wound up about.

LostInShoebiz · 12/01/2019 13:26

Also, I wonder if you might need a hobby or some sort of task to undertake because your days are clearly empty.

InsomniacAnonymous · 12/01/2019 13:30

"Actually she has always been known as Catherine it’s the media that nicknamed her Kate"

Exactly. Her family never call her Kate in public because they never call her Kate in private.

EdWinchester · 12/01/2019 13:30

My friend has dealings with them and her family. Everyone calls her Kate.

It's just the proles that are expected to call her Catherine.

SauvignonMum · 12/01/2019 13:30

I'm almost certain that William called her 'Kate' in an earlier interview, around the time they announced their engagement?

If that's true, then I understand your point OP!

Belindabauer · 12/01/2019 13:32

Her name is Catherine.
I thought it was the press who called her Kate.

Huffleypuff · 12/01/2019 13:32

Also knew of her during uni years, she was definitely Kate. I also think a family who abbreviate Philippa to Pippa probably would’ve called Catherine Kate. I guess it seems a bit pretentious but probably isn’t of their choosing, but rather some official PR advice

DontCallMeCharlotte · 12/01/2019 13:33

My niece Katherine became a Kate when she went to Uni. I call her Kate to piss off her parents because she prefers it now.

Huffleypuff · 12/01/2019 13:34

Do you think everyone calls William “Wills” too?

I believe the press picked up on this after overhearing Charles or Diana using it
