To find it annoying how Kate (Duchess of Cambridge) is referred to as Catherine?

I read an interview with James Middleton today in which he referred to his sister as Catherine rather than Kate. Prince William also calls her Catherine in interviews.

I don't know why, but I find it mildly grating that since she got together with Prince William, her family and friends have suddenly begun referring to her by a different, longer version of her first name - especially when they presumably always called her Kate before, still do in private and everybody else refers to her as Kate anyway.

It just seems very contrived and a little pretentious or something I suppose. AIBU to wonder why Prince William and her family can't just call her Kate in public?

But on a serious note, I thought his article was very well written - my dd 9 has just been diagnosed with adhd.

Agreed.

Dong the papers might report on her ex classmates / teachers using Kate but she was Catherine.

Maybe she changed her name for uni?

I thought his article was very good and admirable. I was diagnosed with Asperger's as an adult and the feelings he describes relating to his discovering he had ADD are so true.

MartaHallard it's just something I heard from my nana when they're in public calm down 😂

Kate is both a shortening for a name and a name in it's own right. Kate Silverton for example is Kate, and her unabreviated name is Kate.

Duchess of Cambridge's unabreviated name is Catherine. Shortening of a given name implies closeness and is generally permitted by the person whose name it is. Therefore it follows that we, strangers to duchess of Cambridge should refer to her by her unabreviated name.

They’re actually directly quoting these people as saying Kate though Hezz. Why would they call her Kate in a quote if she was always known as Katherine?

Oh Jesus, it’s her name!

What's contrived about using the full version of your name in a professional/work context (which is what she and her husband are doing when doing public work). Tons of threads on MN saying things "I want to call my dd trixie" and people saying "Bit cutise, why not call her Beatrix so she can have the option later when she is working". I know loads of people called Trish or Lizzie or whatever by their friends who would introduce themselves to clients as Patricia Smith or Elizabeth Jones.

Kate is pretty much a name on its own these days but the Middletons didn't call her Kate. They called her Catherine. Weird that people think it contrived for them/her to then use this name. Maybe there should be a warning sticker on the baby name threads saying "if you call your child by a name but ever use a shortened version, she will be judged and criticised if she wants to use the longer version when older"

"Contrived" ?? You seem weirdly determined find something to get cross about in her being referred to by the name she has used her entire life.

explodingkitten · 12/01/2019 21:09

My family calls me mouse and I like it, doesn't mean that I would like to see it used in any official matter. I don't see why Kate/ Catherine should be any different. Being a duchess is her job, not her private life.

My DD is known as both Catherine or Kate, by different people (including teachers) at school.

Annoying but possible!
