To think you don’t bloody sneeze in public?Probably get flamed for this but I absolutely detest people sneezing openly in public. It spreads germs and it’s NOT THAT HARD to internally sneeze as in like hold yourself back when you sneeze!

What about you hygiene pet peeves?

Another one is LICKING THE SUPERMARKET BAGS....why?! Why would I want you to slurp on your finger and then use your saliva to lubricate my bag and then continue to put my fresh produce into said bag. EW EW EW.

PS. Don’t say people can’t help sneezing, because unless you are challenged in someway , you ABSOLUTELY can.

I have a theory. I think that many people are on Mumsnet in preference to actually being out in real life. It is the only explanation for the many posters who are horrified by bodily functions and have visceral reactions to perfectly normal objects and situations.

I think you're right. The number of MNers who seem to spend their time shuddering and retching (or often 'wretching' Hmm) at perfectly normal things never fails to astonish me. One wonders how they'd cope if they were transported back in time to a normal household a few hundred years ago.

NewNameNewGame19 · 11/01/2019 17:41

@JustAboutGettingBy Yes. You are probably one who lets their kids with sh*tty shoes stand in your trolley - quite repulsive actions

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 11/01/2019 17:41

I wonder this, too. Some people are horrified by anything less than super super sterile. It's a bit much!

Roussette · 11/01/2019 17:43

to a normal household a few hundred years ago

Not even as long as that. I'm older than lots on here, and everything was v different in my childhood days! There were no sprays for spraying on every surface.... cleaning floors was using a mop and bucket and a squeeze of fairy. There was Jif cream cleaner and Ajax powder, not much else! But people didn't clean everything like you'd catch something if you dared touch a surface that hadn't been cleaned to within an inch of it's life.

We all survived.

Roussette · 11/01/2019 17:46

Everything nowadays seems to be bleurghhh, revolting, or ewww . I think people need to get a life and stop being so dramatic

EwItsAHooman · 11/01/2019 17:50

My hygiene pet peeve is letting kids stand in supermarket trollies that I have to put food in. No excuse. There are seats FFS.

Most food is packaged and any food that isn't packaged should be washed before it's consumed anyway. You are aware though that the trollies are left outside in all weathers and overnight. They get rained on, snowed on, birds and other wildlife climb on them and shit on them, trollies that get retrieved from the local playing field or canal bank don't get sterilised before they're put back into the trolley park.

A child's shoes are the least of your worries.

PS: you're not the first person to have handled your food before you buy it, several other people will have touched it with their germy, diseased HANDS before it makes its way into your trolley. And this is why food is packaged and/or should be washed before eating.

tinyradish · 11/01/2019 17:53

I absolutely cannot stop myself from sneezing. Sorry, must be 'challenged'

However, you should always sneeze into a tissue or somehow cover your nose to stop the spread of germs!

TheGirlWithAllTheFeathers · 11/01/2019 17:55

Not so much your brain but you can damage your eardrums if you suppress a sneeze properly. As long as they do it into a hankie I don't mind.

BertrandRussell · 11/01/2019 17:56

Actually, I do agree about standing in trolleys. I used to take my kids’ shoes off before I let them do that.

EdWinchester · 11/01/2019 17:56

I always hold in my sneezes, but dh reckons he cant do it.

People are allowed to sneeze 😬, just not big, snotty, explosive catastrophic ones.

I’m very repulsed by so many things, including nose blowing in public. I accept I’m in the minority though 😀

I avoid a particular cashier in my local Robert Dyas as she licks her fingers to open bags. Every. Bloody. Time.

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2019 17:59

Standing in trolleys doesn't bother me too much except the safety aspect. I wouldn't use a trolley with visible dirt in the bottom but
I do Scan as You Shop so all my stuff goes straight into bags.

The trolley handle on the other hand-often sticky. Sad

DrFoxtrot · 11/01/2019 18:01

I can internally sneeze Halo and it's my preferred way to sneeze. I close my mouth and wait for the sneeze to come and it's sort of like a half sneeze, quiet and controlled. I can confirm I've never pissed myself, burst a blood vessel, popped a lung or had any other unmentionable accident during an internal sneeze.

I didn't realise a lot of people can't do this. I've always done it as I prefer not to risk snotting everywhere.

JudasPrudy · 11/01/2019 18:12

'My hygiene pet peeve is letting kids stand in supermarket trollies that I have to put food in. No excuse. There are seats FFS.'

I 100% guarantee you'd be the first to cats bum mouth toddlers screaming in the trolley seat/ toddlers running amok around Tesco.

Andjustlikethat · 11/01/2019 18:14

Ok, ok I'll stop letting my child stand in the trolley. Apologies to all and at 13 I think I've probably let it go on a little too long.

Lisabel · 11/01/2019 18:25

Andjustlikethat Fri 11-Jan-19 17:22:49
Lisabel people do still go to work and school with coughs and colds, they generally do not render you ill enough to take time off hmm

Yes that's true. I don't think it should be the case though- if work places allowed for more time off and schools had policies for students staying off when unwell then these infections wouldn't spread around as much as they do.

An upper respiratory virus might make most people mildly ill but for others (e.g. the elderly, immunocompromised individuals, very young kids, people with lung diseases) it can lead to fatal complications. At the very least people should take precautions to reduce the spread of viruses so wash their hands regularly, carry tissues to sneeze/cough into etc.

Also regarding the past- there were fewer cleaning agents/sprays around but I think most people knew to use a hankie to sneeze/cough into and fewer people ate whilst on the go (e.g. without washing their hands) and a lot of families had a habit of handwashing before sitting down to eat with knives and forks so there were some factors that actually reduced the spread of infection.

JustAboutGettingBy · 11/01/2019 18:37

@NewNameNewGame19 I'm sorry but why are you attacking me?? For the record my only child is too young to stand in a trolley. My Hmm was directed at the OPs question. Kindly back off please......

Andjustlikethat · 11/01/2019 18:40

Lisabel as I said above, I'm immunosupressed and rarely leave the house yet I have the dreaded lurgy doing the rounds. With illnesses I just have to make sure hand washing hygiene is good. I'm not sure schools and workplaces could let people stay off when the vast majority aren't compromised. I take responsibility for my own health and can't blame others if I become unwell. I do have an excellent GP though that has me on a priority list if I become unwell and will always be seen/have bloods taken immediately.

KonekoBasu · 11/01/2019 21:53

How many winter coats do people have? Because if you sneeze I to your elbow in winter you're going to be washing your coat a lot.

I've got a stinking cold, doing 12 or 13 sneezes in a row, I'm not covering my mouth with anything as when it starts I'm more interested in not falling over and not pissing myself. I am doing my bit by staying indoors though.

Wallywobbles · 11/01/2019 22:03

I really cannot internally sneeze. Mine literally move me bodily.

snitzelvoncrumb · 11/01/2019 22:08

I will keep sneezing in public (with my mouth covered) sorry I would rather spread germs than damage my sinuses.

howtotrainyourdragqueen · 11/01/2019 22:15

Oh Jesus, really you need to get out more.

What about handling money? Or pushing a supermarket trolley? Or opening a door that a thousand people have done?

Gloves and a hazmat suit are really your only options

BejamNostalgia · 11/01/2019 22:20

I am so relaxed about stuff but that one I don’t like. DH lets DS do it and I point blank refuse to go in the shop with them when they do.

There is no way I can hold in a sneeze. I sneeze responsibly though. Holding a sneeze can be dangerous.

Gronky · 11/01/2019 22:45

A bit after I turned 40, I started to get horrible nose bleeds if I held in a sneeze (the GP says it's nothing to worry about before the barrage of medical advice comes up).
