I like Daenerys but I’m hoping for Jon Snow to get his happy ever after, and Arya too :)

You could be right Feckless, I’ve watched it a few times now and can’t decide whether any of them are young or old now! But a lot of online YouTube critics thought he was.

crispysausagerolls · 17/01/2019 08:49

I think Catlyn in the TV show is miscast - she’s far too old. In the books she is supposed to be 34 and able to have more children etc, in the tv show she looks 45-50.

LaurieMarlow · 17/01/2019 10:03

Totally agree. I struggle with the character in the first place, but the casting doesn't help.

For the pilot they had Jennifer Ehle in that role. I wonder why that didn't pan out. She's much more in line with how I see Cat.

Iftheresawilltheresaway · 17/01/2019 10:13

Jennifer decided that it was too soon to return to work after having her daughter. Net she's kicked herself since given it's success.

Iftheresawilltheresaway · 17/01/2019 10:13

Bet not net sorry

UsedtobeFeckless · 17/01/2019 10:46

I think it's meant to be the last of the Starks seeing their own graves, and then the cold comes ... Just that. It'll turn out to be a dream of Bran's or something. At least one of them will survive, my money's on Sansa!

Yamayo · 17/01/2019 13:35

The trailer was shot as a one-off, it's not footage from the show apparently.

Jorah the Explorer... Grin

The actress who played Cat is 49 now (so a bit younger than that when they filmed the first series), but Sean Bean is 59 now and they are supposed to be peers. Ditto Littlefinger (Aiden Gillen is now 50) and Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy is 55)

Jennifer Ehle is 49 too

Presumably when they decided to age up the children (to avoid Dany being 13 on her wedding night, for example....) they aged up the parents' generation too

EwItsAHooman · 17/01/2019 20:58

A lot of the characters ages would have been problematic for the purposes of the show in practical terms using a load of minors for filming and the restrictions in working hours, etc, and for content as a lot of the characters are underage by real life standards and having dalliances with much older characters.

BartonHollow · 17/01/2019 21:20

Yeah I mean Book Tommen is currently 6

The Baratheon children were 14, 8 and 6

He's informally engaged to Margary but is basically a small child.

He will probably die in Book 6 and Myrcella too but I predict neither will die in the way shown in the series

OlennasWimple · 17/01/2019 22:01

I think they have to die, because of Maggy the Frog's prophesy.

I'd add in Rickon for the "bound to die but not how it happened in the show" list. I don't think that scene would work nearly as well on the page

Yamayo · 18/01/2019 07:07

Book Rickon is safely hidden away on an island somewhere.
He could end up being the Stark heir after his sisters die....

In fact by right as the last boy he should be the heir anyway.

crispysausagerolls · 18/01/2019 08:56

Surely they could’ve altered the ages of the children a bit whilst keeping the parents youngish? Wouldn’t be unbelievable for Catlyn to be 36 if Rob was 18...wouldn’t be unbelievable for the children to be a year apart in age either. I just feel like it changes a lot of the feeling of the character/s. Cat and Ned should be young and able to start again - the idea is mentioned so many times!

OlennasWimple · 18/01/2019 13:56

I think that once they started casting and went with Sean Bean for Ned, they had to age the other actors accordingly.

And, although I get that it is a different dynamic from the books, I loved that a) there was a clear generational difference between the parents and the children - there is more sense of the new kids on the block taking control now, with Cersei (actress Lena Heady is now 45) the oldest ruler still standing. And b) there are plenty of roles for actresses in their 20s and 30s, not so much for those in the 40s and 50s - I'm glad they didn't cast a much younger Cat alongside the obviously older Ned

SweetSummerchild · 18/01/2019 14:25

Some of the characters/casting age differences go the other way though. Both Walder Frey and Olenna Tyrell are supposedly very old and infirm. Walder Frey should have been in his 90s. Regardless of age, both David Bradley and Diana Rigg were marvellous in those roles.

OlennasWimple · 18/01/2019 16:38

Yes, Olenna is supposed to be basically a little hag, isn't she?

Brienne and post-Battle of Blackwater Tyrion are supposed to be repulsively ugly, but are obviously not in the show

Apart from the costumes, I think that the casting is one of the best things about the show. With the exception of Ed Sheeran, I can't think of a single badly cast actor

SweetSummerchild · 18/01/2019 16:59

The Hound is supposed to be a lot more hideous-looking as well. I think they originally made the prosthetics a bit more book-like, but it made speech pretty difficult. In the same way, I think they decided against trying to CGI-out Tyrion’s nose for 5 seasons.

I agree about casting and costumes. I also think the musical score is always very good - regardless of how dodgy anything else in the episode is!

crispysausagerolls · 18/01/2019 18:13

This is a good point!

ElspethFlashman · 18/01/2019 20:58

Well basically every single person is meant to be younger.

I mean Tyrion in ADWD is only 29 and its 4 books in! So he started off mid-twenties. They had to make only 4 years between him and J&C whereas in the books there's what? 8 years?

ElspethFlashman · 18/01/2019 21:01

Wait actually Lyanna Mormon is the right age!

SemperIdem · 18/01/2019 21:32

Re Walder Frey and Olenna - I would imagine that actors who were of an age with them (as the characters in the book) who are still actively working would be hard to find.

I thought they were both very well cast, in comparison to some others, Catelyn Stark (the actor was also Hermione’s mum in the HP films) amongst them.

SweetSummerchild · 18/01/2019 21:57

I think Catelyn is well cast age-wise against those who should be her contemporaries at the beginning of th TV series - namely Ned and Bobby B.

Ned should be mid-thirties in season 1, as should Robert. Robert is described as once having been ‘muscled like a maiden’s fantasy’ but now gone a bit to seed. I don’t think Mark Eddy could ever have been described as that.

Also, Littlefinger should be considerably younger than Cat - which he is in the TV series by their casting.

SweetSummerchild · 18/01/2019 22:01

Mark Addy, of course!

Uptheduffagai · 18/01/2019 23:06

I think Cat was cast perfectly! That scream at the red wedding stays with you forever!

Doobigetta · 18/01/2019 23:41

I’ve just watched a couple of season 1 episodes, and suddenly realised why FWR favourite Lily Madigan has always looked so familiar. They are identical to Viserys Targaeryan!
