to just not "get" Luther?

Everybody raves about it and it never really caught my fancy. Last night H and I thought - well there must be something good about it, so put on 1st episode....

I just dont "get" it? It felt like Silent Witness for 21stC.... Anyone else feel like this? I think my fundamental problem is that I dont like Luther......

Charley50 - Killing Eve was my favourite show of the last year - different, clever and made you laugh even though you knew you really shouldn't it was genius. I have a woman crush on Sandra Oh.

corythatwas · 12/01/2019 00:19

"He's playing a nasty, selfish, narcissistic childish bully in a series of very predictable scenarios. What's to like?"

Plus what Patroclus said about the "floored genius detective". Oh look at meee, you've got to feel sorry for meee. because I've been so hard done by, never mind these other people who get themselves murdered or whatever, it's all about meee, and I've totally got the right to punch other people's faces because I'm feeling sorry for me.

Mcclare · 12/01/2019 00:36

Watched it for first time this series, so wanted to love it but no didn’t get it and thought what was everyone going on about it ... sooo disappointed

Christmasfairy07 · 12/01/2019 00:47

I asked this on another thread but no reply - which series & which episode is the one where the killer hides in the loft?

Titsywoo · 12/01/2019 00:59

Luther is ok. Not brilliant though. Killing eve is fucking genius.

Smallhorse · 12/01/2019 01:25

I agree.
And I don’t get the hype over Idris.

DarkDarkNight · 12/01/2019 01:33

I really like Luther, Idris Elba is very charismatic. But I think the latest series was a bit silly. He wouldn’t be able to slip away that much to deal with George and Alice if he was SIO on a case like that.

The non-police stuff has always been a bit much, but in this series it spoiled it. That said, Luther is so good at the creepy killer. The killer under the bed thing is the stuff of nightmares.

Christmasfairy07 the attic was in series 3, the first episode though it might have been the second. I seriously could not live in that house with all the glass.

CoolCarrie · 12/01/2019 01:36

It’s nasty rubbish and he is such a wooden actor, you are not alone op, can’t stand breaking bad either.

OlennasWimple · 12/01/2019 01:40

I hate his coat and find it distractingly off-putting

OneInAMillionYou · 12/01/2019 05:29

I've found my people....

This last series was absolute tosh. Talk about Emperors New Clothes syndrome.

The 'plots' made no bloody sense whatsoever.

I also think the violence is really unnecessarily graphic. A good detective series relies on clever writing to solve the crime, we really don't need to see the crime in so much bloody detail. I feel that special effects people are just allowed to show off what they can do.

HoraceCope · 12/01/2019 05:33

Nope, I think i tried from the first series, or whatever really, just did not like it.
loved killing eve.
dont like silent witness either though to be fair

TokyoSushi · 12/01/2019 05:53

Nope, I've tried but don't get it either.

Idris Elba though, oh my 😍

longwayoff · 12/01/2019 06:27

The point of Luther is the opportunity to look at Idris for an hour, not the ludicrous story lines.

longwayoff · 12/01/2019 06:32

The last series obviously had 2+ hours of story missing, the editing and continuity were so poor, I was surprised it made it to screen at all.

ModernStoneAgeFamily · 12/01/2019 08:52

Same Oracle I watched episode 1 a couple of days ago after all the hype and was left baffled.

As far as I can see it’s that tired old formula of flawed cop with a temper and an ex. Hasn’t this been done a zillion times before? Confused

As for the psycho woman..she was like a batman villain.
And Idris’ boss.. her London accent is so fake.

ChampooPapi · 12/01/2019 09:02

Love Idris in most of what he does, but the recent series of Luther was terrible! The first episode was on form and then it went downhill fast. By the end I wanted Idris to fall off that ledge with Alice, he really annoyed me throughout this season.

After Killing Eve, this last Luther series looked so ridiculous and actually pretty boring to be honest. And when they killed off the only interesting woman in my opinion (Halliday) me and my partner were like 'you fools!'

Luther is over, bring on more Killing eve please!

ChampooPapi · 12/01/2019 09:07

The scriptwriters seem to have forgotten you have to 'believe' and care about the characters, they took all that away so it made the whole thing meaningless and then the violence was just cruel and gratuitous.

The same level of violence can be used, even more, if it has meaning and drives the story or characters forward, but it really did just seem like some kind of cash cow this time. Ruth and Idris did look to be practically ''phoning it in'

I kept thinking, did they only get them for 2 days? is that actually why Idris isn't on the case that much Grin

Coloursthatweremyjoy · 12/01/2019 09:18

I'd say YWBU but we can't all like the same things. I love Luther but for me they reached peak terror when that guy slid out from under the bed in the last series! I don't think it can get better than that. Plus it's an hour of Idris so...

I do get frustrated with the trend in dramas for not having a real conclusion, explanation or even ending. I don't know why I expect anything different.

I love Silent Witness as well but always wonder whether pathologists in real life get so involved in the investigation, get into trouble so much and really get threatened with closure about three times a year. Grin

Now Killing Eve I just didn't get.

ModernStoneAgeFamily · 12/01/2019 09:25

I always enjoyed Line of Duty. It was complex and thrilling and clever.

Luther seems to have no depth of story or characterisation. As others have said it’s just violent.

HoraceCope · 12/01/2019 09:56

Is it simply for the Eye candy?

longwayoff · 12/01/2019 10:30

And the lighting was terrible. I suspect the whole thing was cobbled together by people on work experience, the quality across the board was very poor. Line of Duty was superb. No comparison.

OutPinked · 12/01/2019 10:32

It’s one of the best TV series I’ve ever watched. Idris is a great actor. YABU.

whataboutbob · 12/01/2019 10:35

I agree the quality is poor, you can see the usual thriller tropes coming a mile away. Everyone seems to be playing stereotype. The butch female boss, the creepy but sexily deranged female psychopath, the burnt out cops drinking their sorrows away as they contemplate the wreckage of their personal lives etc etc. It really is like a bunch of job experience media studies students threw the stories together.

ginghamstarfish · 12/01/2019 10:38

Agree it's crap, we watched a couple of episodes but gave up after that. There are many cop dramas which are better.

anonymousbird · 12/01/2019 10:57

The sound is crap and they are all mumbling so much (god I sound old!) but we've stuck with it, simply cos I don't like to give up before the end, but it's thin at best, as well as ridiculous.

"He escaped in an ambulance" WTAF. Hmm
