to just not "get" Luther?

Everybody raves about it and it never really caught my fancy. Last night H and I thought - well there must be something good about it, so put on 1st episode....

I just dont "get" it? It felt like Silent Witness for 21stC.... Anyone else feel like this? I think my fundamental problem is that I dont like Luther......

YABU, it's brilliant!

Patroclus · 11/01/2019 16:31

Yeah I dont like it and cant understand the hype. Full of tedious cliches and crap acting. The Alice character is laughable and I thught we're finished with 'floored genius detective' stuff years ago.

DarlingNikita · 11/01/2019 16:33

DP and I tried one episode ages ago. A bloke slid out from under someone's bed. It was obviously meant to be terrifying and menacing, but he glided out like he was on castors and it was inexplicably hilarious. We just burst out laughing. Couldn't take it seriously after that.

Doyoumind · 11/01/2019 16:35

It's entertainment. It's not the best thing I've seen. The murders and the police methods are not based on reality. Luther himself is violent and makes impossible leaps in his thinking. Alice also totally implausible. But it's an OK way to pass an hour or so.

Patroclus · 11/01/2019 16:36

People laugh at this but I honestly think Touch of Frost was the best crime drama in its prime. It had good writing, fantastic actors, a bit of social stuff thrown in, could get dark but most importantly knew how dark it should be and when to do brilliant comic relief. It seems they approach the writing of these things last nowadays and throw things until something sticks

Lottapianos · 11/01/2019 16:38

'The writers seem to just try and think of the creepiest thing possible but can't be arsed thinking of a reason for the creepiness. '

Exactly. It's gratuitously nasty. And bloody daft. I can't take any of it remotely seriously

Idris Elba is a gorgeous looking bloke but does nothing for me personally, and he's ridiculously over rated as an actor. I felt sorry for Ruth Wilson, who is a wonderful actor, playing such a tedious generic psycho character

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 11/01/2019 16:39

I've been watching it and think it's great. Hadn't heard of Idris Elba before. Alice spoils it a bit and I think Luther has boundary issues. Why would you ever trust a murderer?

I'm uncomfortable watching the female colleague getting essentially 'gas-lighted' though and ousted out. That's only going to turn bad, it can't go any other way.

Dermot Crowley is a dream to watch. Fabulous actor.

I hope that Ruth Wilson doesn't become too much 'flavour of the month' because she's a bit one-dimensional and quite scripted as an actress, imo, and I don't want to see her in every flipping drama.

LoniceraJaponica · 11/01/2019 17:09

I don't get it either. Idris Elba does nothing for me, and there is too much violence. I watched quite a lot of the first series and then gave up. I tried watching the first episode of this series and have cancelled the recordings because I just didn't like it, and spent too much time with my head averted from the screen.

MrsJBaptiste · 11/01/2019 17:43

Nikita You are the only person I have ever heard say that! Most people know watch Luther and the scene where the man slides out from under the bed is fab! Definitely one of the defining Luther moments 👍

MrsJBaptiste · 11/01/2019 17:45

However I can't stand Ruth Wilson and her curly top lip. Hopefully Alice is actually dead this time and Luther will come to his senses and get together with someone more his type!

DarlingNikita · 11/01/2019 17:47

MrsJBaptiste, sorry but that's the effect it had on me Grin

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 11/01/2019 17:51

Which episode is the man-sliding-out-from-the-bed? I've just started series 2.

I do think that Lee Ingleby is an incredible actor. I've always admired his nose too, it's just so straight.

Witchofzog · 11/01/2019 18:23

I think Indira Varma is THE most beautiful woman I have ever seen. She plays Zoe

Crispmonster1 · 11/01/2019 18:24

I really like the policing and detective half of it but the weird ganglands bit with that gang lots and the very odd lady with the weird lip and booming voice really irritate me. My other half thinks exactly the opposite!! I watched this full series but hadn’t been able to tolerate previous ones.

Crispmonster1 · 11/01/2019 18:27

Patroclus I LOVE a touch of frost. Epic! Ashamedly im a massive fan of diagnosis murder too!

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 11/01/2019 18:27

We are just watching it from S1 (the baddie really looks like that guy from East Enders which is a bit offputing ).

I think we only saw it from series 3 originally. Storylines are bonkers and Alice is very very very irritating. He’s a stroppy angry man. I only liked the ex wife.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 11/01/2019 18:31

Did they kill Alice? I did watch it but I’ve forgotten already!

Weirdwonders · 11/01/2019 18:54

I enjoyed every episode of this series apart from the last one which was ridiculous (Doctor Foster syndrome). I think I must have missed out on a series or two because I suspect the previous ones had been like that and I’d forgotten.

PuppyMonkey · 11/01/2019 18:59

Another “I don’t get it” poster here. I remember the first ever episode back in the day, and it was so bad i thought they were taking the piss. I didn’t watch again and in the meantime the show became a massive hit - I thought I must be missing something and watched this new series. Load of bollocks, and again it was like a parody or something.

I don’t fancy Luther in the slightest either.

I won’t bother again.

tillytrotter1 · 11/01/2019 19:02

I think like a lot of TV series it's been kept going too long, many series really only have two, possibly three, in them and then the writers are struggling.

Cheerbear23 · 11/01/2019 19:08

Series 3 is where it’s got a bit silly. The Alice story was overdone and the character just became annoying. I was disappointed

Charley50 · 11/01/2019 19:24

Only watched the first and the latest series and I think it's a load of crap too, even though I'm a big Elba fan.
It's very unsophisticated and feels jaded and old-fashioned.

Killing Eve was my favourite show of last year. Brilliant.

Guineapiglet345 · 11/01/2019 20:00

I watched the first episode because colleagues were all going on about how amazing it was. I thought it was utter horse crap! So formulaic and clichèd and I just did not care about the characters at all, I remember feeling relieved when it was over.

Patroclus · 11/01/2019 22:19

Just watched a bit of that Bancroft which had a really god starting half hour or so, then descended into exactly the same territory.

PowerPantsRule · 11/01/2019 22:22

Totally agree and it's a relief to hear other people say the same. He's playing a nasty, selfish, narcissistic childish bully in a series of very predictable scenarios. What's to like?

I quite like Idris Elba as an actor but not in this tripe.
