To think 90s Britpop/Indie music was just so cool

Just rediscovered one of my old Shine albums and have been bopping around the kitchen to the sounds of Blur, Oasis, Suede, Ash, Pulp, Elastica, Sleeper etc. Had kinda forgotten just how great all that music was...feeling nostalgic for the long hot summer of 1995 now.... Any other fans out there?

I’m aware it was quite cool to be into music and go to festivals etc , none of this blingy champagne / Prosecco lifestyle crap that’s eberywhere now .

THIS. We used to go to club nights, concerts etc in jeans, a band t shirt and trainers. And everyone was dressed the same. Loved it.

My teenage years...I loved the Britpop/rock/indie/grunge scene so much that I find it difficult to listen to the old albums because it brings up so many emotions!

JustDanceAddict · 11/01/2019 22:22

I had Acupuncture trainers too. I was late 20s though 😂

Natsku · 11/01/2019 22:35

90s music was best music. I was just a child during the 90s but it's still the music I mostly listen too because so much of it was so good.

Cross body record bags

Second hand cord flares

Watching 'Property Ladder' chatting on the landline to my mate

The summer of lime green and acid orange

Minx magazine

Wearing your best jeans to the Irish bar on a Saturday night

Tight football tshirts

Silly dancing Guinness advert

Alcopops (Hooch, Two Dogs etc)

ER

The first summer of Big Brother

It wasn’t just music either, comedy became rock and roll, When Newman and Baddeil played Wembley Arena it was a massive deal. TV too, Men behaving badly, This Life and many more were ‘appointment’ watches before Netflix came along and everyone had multi-channel TV.

It felt we were a very talented, creative country- young, fresh and optimistic. Even our politicians were cool for a while.

There was a period where the country felt rich too without the showoffy eighties excess. Kind of the difference between Kate Moss as a model and Cindy Crawford, a different kind of glamour- things felt attainable I think.

Of course, people can experience hardships in any era but by and large it was a positive time for many. Felt like good times were here and more were coming.

ichifanny · 12/01/2019 09:10

Yes exactly that luxurywoman2018 a feeling that anyone could be successful and happy with out all the show off excess of today .

Lampshadylady · 12/01/2019 10:02

I feel similar, such a force of emotion! My theory is pre the internet it was one of the last ‘tribes’ there was. Where you could know you’d be friends with someone if they had a good band t-shirt on. Where you met with your mates and pored over the NME, shared a Walkman listening to the latest tapes and met at club nights on a Monday. The ‘trendies’ were the enemy. It was like a cool club you had access to by lifestyle choice. The internet changed this completely and it doesn’t happen anymore. Hence why most music is also crap now. My theory anyway!

Queenofthedrivensnow · 12/01/2019 10:19

@LuxuryWoman2018 I really agree with your post. It was the last time you could be famous and acclaimed for being talented and interesting and not because you went on X factor and had any shred of originality produced out of you.

There are glimmers of that notion around. I love lourde but mostly now pop is shite and completely disjointed from politics/current affairs. The newer live aid type efforts - that's why they look so limp now it's just virtues signalling. I knew the bands of the 90's gave a shit

Queenofthedrivensnow · 12/01/2019 10:21

Style was so diverse too. We would have wet ourselves laughing at the kardashian fit as much make up as you can on your face challenge look of today.

LuxuryWoman2018 · 12/01/2019 10:34

Yes, @Queenofthedrivensnow no faffing with eyebrows!

High streets were busy, pubs were packed. We had something like 14 pubs on our high street, they've all gone now.
The football too, it really bought us together. 96 seemed like one long party.

Glastonbury was pretty easy to get tickets for (or sneak in!)

A different time that feels like a couple of years ago.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 12/01/2019 10:37

Yy to the tickets and nothing was online. Went to Glastonbury 97 and 98 - no bother getting tickets. Reading 97 was my best ever festival though - flat, no mud!

Queenofthedrivensnow · 12/01/2019 10:37

The whole label thing only came in at the end of the 90's too

Jayneisagirlsname · 12/01/2019 11:00

Oh I love this thread, so many amazing bands. Really pleased to seeEchobelly and My Life Story have not been forgotten!
I used to love, and still do, David Devant and his SpiritWife. Animals that Swim too, Faded Glamour is a really wonderful melancholy song.
Off to sing along now...

Eatmycheese · 12/01/2019 11:27

EatCrisps · 13/01/2019 10:58

Awesome thread! This is the kind of music DH & I play after a few drinks one DC are in bed

IchWill · 13/01/2019 12:22

@HiGunny I agree. Best ETA for music.

Do you attend the Shiiine On festival at Butlins? If not look it up and look at past line-ups.

Heading back for our third year this year. It's amazing, all those wonderful bands from that era under one roof, the atmosphere is electric and the crowd and staff are just superb. Really great weekend.

IchWill · 13/01/2019 12:24

@Jayneisagirlsname

I saw My Life Story I'm November at Shiiine On indie festival (which is amazing), they were bloody fantastic.

Oh and I adored David Devant. Saw them live a few times. When they used to grateful the carrots on the blokes head during Ginger. 🤣🤣

Jayneisagirlsname · 13/01/2019 12:42

@IchWill
Ooh I'd not heard of the Shine On festival - off to google now! Also saw DD live - brilliant and funny lalalalalalead piping 😃

PETRONELLAS · 13/01/2019 12:47

I was there too! Loved the 90s and had younger friends at uni so it felt like it started with Oasis/Nirvana and ended with drum & bass and techno.

IchWill · 13/01/2019 12:49

@Jayneisagirlsname do check out previous line ups. It is amazing.

Highlights for me there past few years are Space, Levellers, BiS, My Life Story, Salad, She'd Seven, Wonderstuff, Pop Will Eat Itself.

We leave our DPs at home and have a girl's weekend. Also, it's worth noting you can pay in installments.

I need to listen to some DD now. ❤️
