To think 90s Britpop/Indie music was just so cool

Just rediscovered one of my old Shine albums and have been bopping around the kitchen to the sounds of Blur, Oasis, Suede, Ash, Pulp, Elastica, Sleeper etc. Had kinda forgotten just how great all that music was...feeling nostalgic for the long hot summer of 1995 now.... Any other fans out there?

1996 for me. I was but a kid but had plenty of older friends and had just discovered current music.

ShannonRockallMalin · 10/01/2019 13:25

I used to have the NME and Melody Maker put by for me at the newsagents each week, so I could plan my listening/gigging schedule!

0ccamsRazor · 10/01/2019 13:37

Bands such as the Levellers and the Waterboys were absolutely awesome, there was change in the air and such optomism for the future.......... A real feeling of anything was possible Hmm

ichifanny · 10/01/2019 13:48

YES occams I wasn’t sure of that anything was possible feeling was down to the fact I was 16 and free and young . But there was a great feeling in the nineties, a labour government towards the end , people treated not too shabbily and as far as I’m aware it was quite cool to be into music and go to festivals etc , none of this blingy champagne / Prosecco lifestyle crap that’s eberywhere now .

Loved the Britpop years. Got married in 1996 and was at the V Festival watching Pulp a few week before the wedding. Great memories of simpler times.

ShannonRockallMalin · 10/01/2019 14:35

@0ccamsRazor oh, I loved the Levellers. Saw them live eight times!

AbsentmindedWoman · 10/01/2019 14:41

90s were AMAZING! Totally agree.

So, so nostalgic for my youth.

0ccamsRazor · 10/01/2019 15:11

I accidently saw the Levellers with my sister, we had met up with a couple of crusties in a van done out as something from a Cheech and Chong movie, complete with hubbly bubbly bong and bells. They were friends of the Levellers band so we went along to one of their gigs.

Anyone remember Bjork she was such a girl crush 💕

Whippet75 · 10/01/2019 15:18

Loved the 90s music, was also a teenager and had the time of my life. Stone Roses, Charlatans, Bluetones to name a few of my faves. Also had the biggest crush on Brett Anderson from Suede, ahhh when life was so less complicated.
Great thread, going to have a 90s CD evening I think.

AnguaUberwaldIronfoundersson · 10/01/2019 15:20

We’ve been watching Derry Girls on Netflix and it’s set in the early 90’s. The total nostalgia I get with the music is crazy. Songs I didn’t even like back in the early 90’s but totally appreciate for their brilliance now. Truly an amazing era for music.

FreezerBird · 10/01/2019 15:44

DH and I have a similar reaction to the film The World's End. It's complete nonsense, but the soundtrack is wonderful.

0ccamsRazor · 10/01/2019 15:49

One more then off to do, here is the wonderful, the most tuneful, the one and only REM

Definitely. In 20 years how much of the shite music around now will still be played all the time. Music was more precious then, we saved for it, worked for it, chose it carefully, treasured it. These days it's too easy, and we're saturated with 'meh' music. It's very rare for a track to captivate me like the 90's classics do.

Watch My mad fat diary for some 90's classics!

Asgoodasarest · 10/01/2019 15:52

Loved it all, yanbu! I found some old pictures the other day (when you had to go and get them developed and had no idea what you’d get!!) and they just made me smile. Happy times even if I did totally bugger my a levels!

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 10/01/2019 15:52

Op ...a lady after my own heart! I love the Brit pop era too...

haverhill · 10/01/2019 15:54

This thread has inspired me to put on Columbia by Oasis - their best song by far.

GroggyLegs · 10/01/2019 15:55

God I loved REM - still do, although they went off the boil for me with their later albums.

90s brings back memories of Dr Martens, band t-shirts from the market and those jeans with huge coloured patches on the legs.

I'm so glad I was a 90s teen.

halfwitpicker · 10/01/2019 15:59

We’ve been watching Derry Girls on Netflix and it’s set in the early 90’s.

^^

YES!

KellyanneConway · 10/01/2019 16:01

Great post! The early- mid 90's was the best time of my life. I was a student '94-97 and loved the indie nights at local clubs. I'm from Manchester, which gave me massive kudos because of our fantastic music. I was at Glastonbury 1995, it was boiling hot, so much my scalp got burned. Such wonderful memories of watching PJ Harvey being a goddess in that pink cat suit.
We all went out in Adidas or converse trainers with jeans and a glittery top with minimal make up and short hair or 70's centre partings. No mobile phones so no need for insta-ready, selfie-friendly make up sessions before we went out, no wavy blow dries or high heels - it was a beautiful time.

IJustLostTheGame · 10/01/2019 16:03

I used to dream I was in Garbage. I loved that band.
I also wanted hair like the girl from Republica.

I miss the 90s.
I loved blur, pulp, the levellers, nirvana, elastica, alisha's attic etc etc.

jojosiwa · 10/01/2019 16:23

Yanbu
Music is pure shite these days with some small exceptions.
Late 80's into the 90's were amazing... magical almost!
George Michael and wham... queen at live aid, Michael Jackson, Madonna. Omg there was so much raw and real talent.
These fuckers now who get insta famous with not much talent really annoy me.
Kanye west at Glastonbury 2/3 years ago tried to do a cover of bohemian rhapsody. Christ almighty it was woeful.

jojosiwa · 10/01/2019 16:28

@thenewaveragebear1983 you've got the nail on the head.
I remember the painful decisions I had to make on a Saturday in the virgin megastore, deciding which CD to spend your hard earned babysitting money on!
Remember they had listening stations where you could listen to the album before you bought it??!

Areyoufree · 10/01/2019 16:28

Ah, the nineties. Before they tightened up the music licensing laws, and basically killed live music. Would go to see live bands every week. Plus, there were way more good female musicians then - like Skin from Skunk Anansie. She was incredible!

ambereeree · 10/01/2019 16:28

God i loved garbage. Stupid girl was such an iconic single.

iklboo · 10/01/2019 16:29

Whenever I'm getting ready for a night out I put 90s indie music on in the background - makes me nostalgic Grin
