To think 90s Britpop/Indie music was just so cool

Just rediscovered one of my old Shine albums and have been bopping around the kitchen to the sounds of Blur, Oasis, Suede, Ash, Pulp, Elastica, Sleeper etc. Had kinda forgotten just how great all that music was...feeling nostalgic for the long hot summer of 1995 now.... Any other fans out there?

Omg I totally forgot the auteurs

Bands time has forgotten:

Thurman
Marion
The gyres
Whiteout

Saw the supernatural s recently at a 90s festival day. I remember seeing them at Irvine beach in 95/96. Northern uproars dads also played the festival. At least thats who I think it must have been.

Sonya from echobelly, nanda from bis and I still look exactly the same. Obvs! 😆

Highpeak · 10/01/2019 20:46

I was a student at Manchester in the late 90s, it was a great time and place to be young

TheVanguardSix · 10/01/2019 20:50

I'm with you OP.
Suede was a great band that I didn't quite appreciate at the time. Brett Anderson was gorgeous! I was fixated on Blur.
Chemical Brothers
Massive Attack
Radiohead

I still listen to my 90s favourites and am following my bands into old age. I am a loyalist.

IncomingCannonFire · 10/01/2019 20:54

Absolute 90's radio station.

Lampshadylady · 10/01/2019 21:24

I used to really fancy the guy from Marion but I’m not sure their music’s any good!

The Auteurs - I took a showgirl for my bride - loved that one

I used to read NME, MM, Select and Lime Lizard

I wore little slip dresses with big DM’s and....God I feel nostalgic now

Hoopaloop · 10/01/2019 21:39

I do wonder whether every "generation" thinks that about the music of their teenage years?

Yes they do but they are clearly mistaken. The 90's had so much great music, of all styles. Notably the golden era of indie/britpop, grunge, metal, jungle/d+b, techno, hard trance, speedcore and hard house. I'm just going through all the 1 in the Jungle sets on Soundcloud and Mixcloud on my way to/from work at the moment. Radio 1 emulating pirate radio with cutting edge dj's and mc's. Kids now don't even know what pirate radio is, even if they watch People Just Do Nothing.

Pretty much everything since has been whack.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 10/01/2019 21:40

I was 16 in 1995. Living in herts so into London all the time. Went to Brit pop and mods nights until I left home for uni. Amazing time and yy about the optimism. Labour winning the election in 97 was euphoric and makes me very emotional thinking about it.

I remember the tag line for the film Human Traffic being 'the last great film of the nineties' like we will all lose something when the decade ends.

Coming of age at the turn of the century was unique I think.

Rick stars in number 10 and Cool Britannia. We scoffed then but there's nothing cool in number 10 right now.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 10/01/2019 21:42

Disco 2000 makes me bawl my eyes out

BabloHoney · 10/01/2019 21:47

90s britpop ruled! I got sent home from school once on non uniform day when I wore my Suede GayAnimalSex t-shirt #rebel Grin

buzzy1 · 10/01/2019 21:53

Loved that era and a lot of the music has aged well. And so many cool women fronting bands like the Breeders, Sleeper and Belly.

Oysterbabe · 10/01/2019 21:58

It was amazing. I stopped listening to new music in about 2005 and mostly listen to 90s playlists on Spotify.

MamaLovesMango · 10/01/2019 22:15

No. I was a teen in early 00s and the music was shite with only a couple of exceptions
Coldplay

RJnomore1 · 10/01/2019 22:15

I remember going to see Human Traffic in the indie cinema in Edinburgh with dh just after we got married, we went for a couple of nights before our proper honeymoon a few months later.

Dd was born the last week of the millennium and my gran died the same week and life changed forever.

Sorry...I don't think backwards very often.

ThatsNotNiceRoger · 10/01/2019 22:42

Radiohead The Bends is still one of my favourite ever albums. I love them.

Missdread · 10/01/2019 23:03

Belle and Sebastian anyone?!

RJnomore1 · 10/01/2019 23:14

Favourite band ever missdread.

Soundtrack to my slightly loner teenage existence. Arab strap too? Always think they're the ting and yang of Glasgow music. Belle and Sebastian are Friday night and Arab strap are Monday morning!

Eliza9917 · 10/01/2019 23:17

Someone should organise a MN meetup at a Butlins 90's Weekender GrinGrinGrin

TwoleftUggs · 10/01/2019 23:29

Oh the 90s music was amazing. I turned 16 in 1990 and was at uni during the best years so it’s totaly my era. I get so nostalgic when I hear some of the stuff it hurts! Nobody mentioned Lush, they were my favourite band. Lovelife is still played regularly in my house.

HelloDarlin · 10/01/2019 23:35

Still have all my old Britpop records, will never give them away!
Off to London next month. I remember when I moved there in 1995, I was all about Camden, gigs & clothes. Still get that buzz, thinking about my young self...

Missdread · 10/01/2019 23:37

RJnomore1 I am still obsessed with them 20 years on!

whatswithtodaytoday · 11/01/2019 05:21

@TwoleftUggs 'I'm a five foot mirror for adoring himself, here's seven years' bad luck' Grin

coolwalking · 11/01/2019 05:23

Elastica are still my favourites!

Loved Justine and the original line up

Crappygilmore · 11/01/2019 06:38

I still love The Levellers and see them at least twice a year live.
I also loved The Wonderstuff
REM, Back to the planet, garbage, nirvana.
I still play them regularly. The 90's rocked for alternative music. Got a bit shite toward the end of the decade . Shine on 90's brethren.

dirtylittlemonsters · 11/01/2019 07:10

I used to average about two gigs a week and have kept all my ticket stubs in a small photo album. When I flick back through it now I feel so privileged to have seen so many amazing bands. It's completely dominated by Blur who I ended up seeing over 26 times but lots of other great bands like Stone Roses, Pulp, Charlatans, Happy Mondays, Underworld and I was in front row for Oasis at Knebworth. That ticket cost £22.50 which I thought was a fortune at the time but would be well over £100 now probably. I spent every weekend in Camden at the Good Mixer and Dublin Castle. Knew where Noel Gallagher's basement flat was, followed Damon around and regularly hung out at a bands flat (ahem, Menswear). Best time of my life.

SugarinaPlum · 11/01/2019 09:45

Was listening to Animal Nitrate and nothing makes me feel older than Brett singing “now you’re over 21” and I can’t quite believe that in my lifetime there was a different age of consent for gay men.
