Am I right to be shocked that...

A woman in the supermarket the other day had her toddler with her, must've been about 3 years old and she filled her entire trolley full of baby jars (cleared the shelf) and I overheard her say to her boyfriend "this should all last for a week if she has 3 of them a day"

Surely this is just... not right?! I am probably being judgmental here but how long does it take to cook a meal, maybe a spag bol or sausages and mash? Them jars taste like shit as well. When I gave one to my son when he was first weaned and we was out visiting family, it smelt of sick & even he spat it out Envy

At three you would expect a toddler to eat what you eat.

BUT

you never know the circumstances in a tiny snapshot of a life.

Ifailed · 09/01/2019 08:07

how do you know she doesn't have a younger child?

scarylea · 09/01/2019 08:08

Could it perhaps have been for another younger child of hers? You are correct, you are being judgemental.

BrieAndChilli · 09/01/2019 08:09

Well 3 a day for a week would be 21 jars so not a trolley full!!
But they

  • could have a baby at home
  • could have a friend/relative with a baby who couldn’t get out
  • the child could have a digestive disorder that means she needs mashed food
  • they could be for an elderly person/someone who’s had dental surgery

Of course there is a possibility they were for the 3 year old and they are lazy parents but you can never make a snap judgment as there as always other possibilities. I know I’ve brought random things in the past eg 50 Easter eggs but they weren’t all for the child I had with me!!

5foot5 · 09/01/2019 08:10

Same as Littlejayx.

The jars might have been for another baby who wasn't with them. Maybe they were going away for a week and the jars were an easy alternative for the baby instead of what she usually makes.

You just don't know

MummySharkDoDo · 09/01/2019 08:10

Tbh I wouldn’t think it’s great but I’d be thinking ‘at least they’re designed to be reasonably balanced’. I’ve known people over the years who can’t cook/ be organised feed children terribly. One gave her son the same pack of crisps and crustless spread sandwich every meal every day until school and I’ve seen others eat nothing but snacks all day and nothing resembling a meal or meal time in their lives. So on the scale of shit it’s off my radar.

Sirzy · 09/01/2019 08:10

If you looked at the food I fed my ds on a weekly Basis I am sure you would hoik your judgy pants up.

However he is autistic with an eating disorder so judge away.

What you see for a second in the supermarket says nothing about the bigger picture

NicoleNoPants · 09/01/2019 08:11

Your son might not have liked it but plenty of babies do- the industry seems to be doing pretty well!

SoupDragon · 09/01/2019 08:12

YABU to be "Shocked". Surprised, perhaps. Yes, you are being judgemental though - there is no"probably" about it. There's no way of knowing what the situation is (younger sibling, SNs, whatever)

TheMincePiesAreMine · 09/01/2019 08:14

Yes you're being judgemental. You know nothing about them, you don't even know if they were for the 3 year old.

mimibunz · 09/01/2019 08:14

I’m finding it hard to judge the mum in the story because I can’t get past your atrocious grammar.

JoeLycettsSparklyArmSling · 09/01/2019 08:16

I judge you more for being so rude as to eavesdrop on their conversation when it was none of your business and then being so judgmental.

WhenLifeGivesYouLemonsx · 09/01/2019 08:17

We are all judgmental. Nobody is perfect! Maybe I was being judgmental but I suppose that's what comes into my head. I know it is not right to think that way.

cushioncovers · 09/01/2019 08:17

Could they of been going away for a week and needed back up food in case the child wouldn't eat the local cuisine?

Sirzy · 09/01/2019 08:18

You know it’s not right to think that way yet you still posted a thread in the hope others would join your judgement. Nice!

chickhonhoneybabe · 09/01/2019 08:19

UABU! you don’t know the full circumstances.

WhenLifeGivesYouLemonsx · 09/01/2019 08:21

There's worse threads on here with very judgemental people! I'm not the only bad person here

OP posts:
planespotting · 09/01/2019 08:21

They could be
A) buying for a younger child
B) buying for an adult (I ate baby food after a surgery)
C) have a toddler with tonsillitis
D) unable to cook this week
Etc

NeverTalksToStrangers · 09/01/2019 08:23

My ds1 ate a lot of jars as a baby because he had difficulty not choking on other things and no matter how smooth I made home made food, he always refused it for some reason. The more effort I made the less likely he was to eat a single bite. You are being judgemental.

GalacticChickenShit · 09/01/2019 08:23

Happy to admit you're being judgemental but not to concur you might be wrong in your judgement?

Minniemagoo · 09/01/2019 08:24

At these situations it really helps to realise you don't have all the facts so shouldn't judge.
The child could be autistic and only eat jars
Mum could be going into hospital and stocking up for Dad as he also needs to juggle work/visit her
Both mum and dad could be going away (Funeral/holiday/wedding) and jars are easy for Granny
They could be peppers and stocking up for when Brexit blocks all the trucks carrying fresh veg at Dover
I like this game when I come accross a situation like this (though sometimes my suggestions are wierd!!)

Me too!!!
DH never joins in Sad

DocusDiplo · 09/01/2019 08:27

That is sad for a kid to have to eat jar food all the time. Disgusting.

Allabitmuchisntit · 09/01/2019 08:28

Ooh trolley contents judging! What fun!

planespotting · 09/01/2019 08:28
