Am I right to be shocked that...

A woman in the supermarket the other day had her toddler with her, must've been about 3 years old and she filled her entire trolley full of baby jars (cleared the shelf) and I overheard her say to her boyfriend "this should all last for a week if she has 3 of them a day"

Surely this is just... not right?! I am probably being judgmental here but how long does it take to cook a meal, maybe a spag bol or sausages and mash? Them jars taste like shit as well. When I gave one to my son when he was first weaned and we was out visiting family, it smelt of sick & even he spat it out Envy

Food from a jar may be considered to be real food but it has lower nutritional levels than home made food. The NHS did a study on it. I we should talk about the nutrition in food crisis in the UK. It’s making our children fat and mentally ill.

Bluntness100 · 09/01/2019 11:13

It is really food, not considered so. And there is nothing to suggest a toddler was being fed continuously on it, other than the op being bitchy.

ToastyFingers · 09/01/2019 11:15

Dd1 only managed to eat baby jars until she was almost 2. The totally pureed first stage ones as she couldnt/wouldnt chew anything with texture and anything other than jars caused her to vomit.

I'm not lazy, never eat ready meals or pre-packaged stuff myself and dd2 probably ate food from a jar less than 5 times in her infanthood.

If it were me you been judging, I'd like to think I would have given you a piece of my mind but in reality, life was so difficult for us then, I'd probably have just gone home and cried.

planespotting · 09/01/2019 11:18

@ToastyFingers 😪

OutPinked · 09/01/2019 11:21

Trolley judging, oh wow... you need to get out more. Do people really notice what others buy in supermarkets? How odd. I did once ask a friend who worked in a supermarket whether he judged what people bought and he said he only did when he saw parents putting nappies to one side to buy alcohol. That’s bad parenting, not buying food for your child...

You have no idea why they need to buy baby food for the toddler. Could have a medical condition or sensory issues due to autism. In future don’t judge from a snapshot of someone’s life.

ToastyFingers · 09/01/2019 11:29

@planespotting ah bless, don't feel bad for us! Dd has improved so much (she's 5 now) and food is her absolute favourite thing.

Having a baby with difficulties is so hard, you worry from the minute you wake up and just desperately want the best for them. There's a sad irony in that the judgemental toads of the world are usually those blessed with healthy children who couldn't walk a day in the other persons shoes.

PerryPerryThePlatypus · 09/01/2019 11:29

When my mum was dying jarred baby food was all she could eat that would for the most part stay down and not be vomited back up. The closer she got to the end and the more pain relief she was on, the more pureed the jars got until she was on four jars of the egg custard a day.
Yes we all make judgements but most of us have the cop on to know that we are only seeing a tiny snippet of a persons life and there could be loads of reasons why.

MamaLovesMango · 09/01/2019 11:30

@toastyfingers you wouldn’t have been able to have explained or given OP a piece of your mind because OP wouldn’t have said any of this to your face, just run off to the internet and exaggerated the situation for her own amusement. That’s what’s so sad about this. The blatant holier-than-thou attention seeking.

Purplespup16 · 09/01/2019 11:31

this should all last for a week if she has 3 of them a day

This alone tells me that this isn’t a ‘usual’ shop! If this was something fed on a normal basis they would have been placed into the trolley with no comment, or if any comment at something like “these are the ones he/she eats you’ll need 3 a day”.

PerryPerryThePlatypus · 09/01/2019 11:32

And by the way I work in a supermarket and have more chances to trolley judge. But I'm not a knob so I don't.

ToastyFingers · 09/01/2019 11:32

People rarely say things to your face, it's easy to spot the smug toad-like face of judgement though.

BaitandSwitch · 09/01/2019 11:37

I'm probably one of few who agrees with you, OP -I think you have touched a nerve with this thread. I cannot understand why most parents would wish to feed their precious babies with such rubbish - highly processed foods that are high in salt and sugar. These will wean babies with heightened appetites for salt & sugar - great for the junk food industry and fast-food joints but bad for humans!

With ours, we gave them what we ate - freshly prepared meals which were then blended/chopped as needed. Easy, cheap and satisfying.

x2boys · 09/01/2019 11:44

It they were that bad .bait the shops wouldn't be allowed to.well them, but that's not what people are saying , they are saying there are any number of reasons why the person is buying them ,and the Op is ridiculous for judging when she has no.idea of any reasons .

x2boys · 09/01/2019 11:44

Well them*

MamaLovesMango · 09/01/2019 11:46

I cannot understand....

Read some of the replies to OP which explain exactly what might have actually been going on here @baitandswitch and then you might begin to understand. HTH.

And here’s your non-existent medal. Just for you. Biscuit

x2boys · 09/01/2019 11:46

Sell them even why does this stupid tablet think it knows better than me about what I want to write!

Sirzy · 09/01/2019 11:46

Ds was weaned on homemade food. Ate loads.

At 9 I am impressed if he eats a chicken nugget

x2boys · 09/01/2019 11:48

My son too.Sirzy the joys of autism!

littlepotatoes · 09/01/2019 11:57

I had to do this for my sister the other day. She's doing the "Baby Food Diet" throughout January (😫😫). Really might not have been for the 3 year old at all!!

JustJoinedRightNow · 09/01/2019 11:59

I too couldn’t get past the poor grammar and can’t stand people judging others for what they’re feeding their kids.
There’s another thread going where a DD was fed her left over lunch for dinner because she refused it at lunch time. So many smug posters saying it was “pandering” to a three year old to let them choose what they want to eat. Obviously those posters have really, truly never dealt with fussy and anxious eaters. Way to set kids up with unhealthy relationships with food.

Sonneedshelp · 09/01/2019 12:20

Well aren't you just mother of the universe? I'm not sure all children are the same as yours, nor do I think all mothers circumstances are the same as yours!

BrieAndChilli · 09/01/2019 12:33

@baitandswitch
I dont agree with the OP and I NEVER gave any of my 3 kids jarred baby food. most people are just giving scenarios in which it may be necessary to purchase baby food either ongoing or as a temporary thing.
Mine always had what we were eating and i cooked fresh everyday.

Sirzy · 09/01/2019 12:48

Which is great until the day they refuse to eat that. Or anything else put in front of them.

ABoozedMoose · 09/01/2019 12:49

This happened 'the other day' and you're still thinking about it? You and your judgey pants really need to get out a bit more often. Either that or spend your energy on worrying about something that actually matters.

x2boys · 09/01/2019 12:50

My sister did everything you are supposed to.so ,she lovingly cooked and pureed her sons food , and froze them in ice cube trays and guess what he turned his nose up at them yet would demolish baby jars some kids can be very fussy .
