I would never name a child Mia = missing in action. Or Cameron, what if she marries a guy named Cameron and then she is called Cameron Cameron?
Or Claudia because it means “one who is lame“ in Latin.

:) Thanks Whywontthey GrinGrinGrinThanks

Bishalisha · 07/01/2019 23:34

@saucyjack I’m rooting for the Kimberley’s!

Olddognewtricks2019 · 07/01/2019 23:35

I knew 2 Kims. 1 was unpleasant and the other a much love family dog. But Kim basinger redeems the name. I learnt recently that Kim catrall was due to fly on the Pan-am that exploded over Lockerbie. So was Jonny rotten.

Newbeginnings2019 · 07/01/2019 23:37

I have an irrational dislike of the name amelia. I don't know why, I just can't listen to it without curling my toes.
Also dislike niamh and Harriet. Again, no reason.

WakeMeWhenTheyTurn18 · 07/01/2019 23:38

Alice/Alison- the song who the fuck is Alice.
Precious /Angel /Jewel / Crystal - Seem a bit "look at me", i have known a Precious and an Angel and they were anything but. And the 1 jewel and 3 crystals i have known have been a bit "dull" and just didn't suit the name.
Emily/Sarah- have known lots and never met a nice one.
Nigel= knock off nigel
Collin = creepy collin.

Admittedly whilst my dds haven't appeared in anyones list (that i have spotted) i am guilty of having both dds names start with the same letter ( quite an unpopular letter by all accounts on this thread). They are the only ones in their large school with their name and they love it.

StreetwiseHercules · 07/01/2019 23:45

Poseidon, Rubicon, Nebuchadnezzar.

UncleFailBOOT · 07/01/2019 23:48

My dc's name's been mentioned a couple of times on this thread, but - phew! - not by any of the despairing teachers Grin

I dislike the sound of "ank" so Frank and Hank were not on my list
And also the sound "een" so no Doreens or Maureens for us, sorry

It would be so boring if we had to choose from a list of Government approved names, I do like the variety

RosemarysBabyDress · 07/01/2019 23:49

Poseidon, Rubicon, Nebuchadnezzar
shame, great name when the child learns to write

slappinthebass · 07/01/2019 23:55

I couldn't chose a top 10 name, for the same reason as someone else mentioned. When I was at school in the 90's I had a top 10 name and there were 6 others with my name in my year. We were numbered. I hated it. As an adult I have friends known as blonde Sarah/Scottish Sarah/Sarah surname/Crazy Lou/big Lou/Lou glasses/hippie Lou and so on with Jo/Kate/Jen/Becky. In fact I've avoided the top 100 for all of mine just incase. I've seen how quickly names can rise in popularity.

Yidette86 · 07/01/2019 23:56

Some more...

Luna, Precious, Felix, Dexter, Max... They are pet names to me

RedToothBrush · 07/01/2019 23:57

Please!

Will a mumsnetter out there call their son

Poseidon Rubicon Nebuchadnezzar Surname.

Preferably with a really common surname like Smith or Jones or Brown.

Poseidon Rubicon Nebuchadnezzar as a complete combo is completely epic.

Sadly we are not having another one ourselves. If we were DH would probably be all over this like a rash and I feel its a missed opportunity and great loss to society.

GettingBackToMe · 08/01/2019 00:00

Ophelia, absolutely never! Apart from the feel-ya sound, the character went mad and drowned herself... just no! Although I did have Rosalind, Beatrice and Viola on my list of possible girls names - so not entirely against Shakespeare.

For boys, I couldn't have chosen Tim or Simon, just too urgh, not sure why. My eldest DS is on this thread though, so what do I know?! DH vetoed some of my favourites, I really wanted Lysander and Merlin!

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 08/01/2019 00:00

Kim for me too because my husband is Korean and it’s the most common surname here so it would sound very weird to Koreans.

Anything like Alfie, Albert, Florence etc, just find it twee tbh.

Anything with too many r, l or s sounds, to much chance of a speech impediment.

Deliqueen · 08/01/2019 00:01

I'm not a fan of hyphenated names. The best one I've come across was a girl called May-Anais.
I was one of 4 in my class so have named my children unusual but not out there names. DD1 is the only one in her secondary school and DD2 will be too but they have not been mentioned on here, thank goodness.

Olddognewtricks2019 · 08/01/2019 00:01

I’d go for Jeroboam over Nebuchadnezzar Wine

Re Amelia, a friend who is Spanish chose the name and told her mum it would be the English spelling, with an A. I’d have gone for the E in her shoes. Or just stopped at Emile

Yidette86 · 08/01/2019 00:02

Bianca - the Eastenders link and it rhymes with wanker Grin

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 08/01/2019 00:04

@Fusioluxe - I know a vile Paulina, I wonder if one of yours is my Paulina!?

KitchenDancefloor · 08/01/2019 00:05

Ella - just seems like half a name

Matthew and Laura - the 80s name equivalents of magnolia

Any adjectives - Lacey, Randy, Misty, Red

Any nouns - Jet, Cash, Storm, Summer

Adjectives(hyphen)nouns - eg Sunny-Scout

Occupations - Paige, Mason, Tyler, Plumber, Hod-carrier, Management Accountant, Quantity Surveyor, Nail Technician etc Grin

Olddognewtricks2019 · 08/01/2019 00:08

Emma. It should be beautiful but so should Lisa.

KitchenDancefloor · 08/01/2019 00:09

I worked with someone who wanted to have a son called Nebuchadnezzar (Chad for short). Wonder if she ever had kids? 'Scuse me, I'm off down a social media rabbit hole to find out. Don't wait up.

Frogletmamma · 08/01/2019 00:14

Madison. Wrong!

CoughLaughFart · 08/01/2019 00:18

Cheryl. It makes me think of mutton dressed as lamb women with ‘bubbly’ personalities.

pineapplebryanbrown · 08/01/2019 00:19

I've never met a nice Dawn or a horrible Sharon.

My name is on the list for being boring - it's not, it's classical, so there.

I don't like pre-shortened names on the bc ie Katie or Joe. Both great as nn but they need a big boy/girl name on the bc Imo.

WakeMeWhenTheyTurn18 · 08/01/2019 00:20

we built i always used to chuckle at her name, i always wondered if it was her given/ married name or perhaps a "stage name" ?

I am also guilty of giving dds names they will never find printed on plastic tat! As a child i hated my parents because i could never find my name on stuff (my name is typically the short version of a long name, when i was born it was not the norm to name a child the short version, oh and they spelt the short version differently too!) I have only just realised i have inadvertently done the same to my children. Hmm

catlady3 · 08/01/2019 00:25

What an excellent thread! Thinking about it, most of my rules stem from things I dislike about my own name. It's hyphenated and that causes all sorts of issues filling internet forms. I also felt like it was "weird" and made me stand out as a young child which I remember as a source of discomfort and even shame. So I wouldn't do that to a child - although I like my name now. Wouldn't pick anything too popular or too extravagant, or something that is prone to being pronounced incorrectly. Guess my name choices would be really middle of the road and bland!!
