I would never name a child Mia = missing in action. Or Cameron, what if she marries a guy named Cameron and then she is called Cameron Cameron?
Or Claudia because it means “one who is lame“ in Latin.

No specific names...but having nursery nurse and teaching assistant jobs you meet some not so lovely children I just couldnt name my child the same as.

Sausagerollers · 07/01/2019 18:14

I would never call my kids any of the "white-trash" names, as listed by Mark Wahlberg's character lists in the film Ted.

Two of my friends' kids names are in that list & it makes me cringe every time I hear them!

Justajot · 07/01/2019 18:14

I wouldn't call a girl Madison. It ends in "son" so really doesn't belong on a girl.

I also wouldn't go for something like Mason because it's obvious an occupation.

BentNeckLady · 07/01/2019 18:14

Matilda. I just think it’s a really ugly sounding word.

Jordan, Jayden, Hayden, Kayden and Chantelle. Not me at all.

chaoscategorised · 07/01/2019 18:14

Ooh agree on the Sophies - all the ones I know are awful!

Would never use Chloe (it's a family member's name but other Chloes I've known have been dickheads), anything that was very associated with a current TV show/film character (Arya from GOT seems popular at the moment), or pretty much any name ending in an 'a' (Ava, Ella, Anya, Emma, Nora, Tessa). Oh, and nothing with a hyphen because I hate them.

I have a lot of personal name rules haha!

Zoflorabore · 07/01/2019 18:15

I hate the name Emily for no reason.
I don't like the name Amelia due to its meaning.
Hate Cayden, Lucas, Ellie, Ella.

Both of mine have names that are popular but are not tacky.
Dd (7)is only one of 2 in her primary school with her name, ds (15) is the only one in his secondary school with his name but it has been number one boys name for a few years so there are lots of little ones with his name. I was ahead of the times Grin

Asthenia · 07/01/2019 18:16

Madison is horrible. I also don’t like American sounding names - Parker, Hunter, Ryder.

SaucyJack · 07/01/2019 18:16

Any of those overused Olivia/Amelia Harry/Oliver type names.

Doesn’t matter how nice they may or may not be, they lose any sense of purpose when you’re one of 4 in a class or workplace- and you have to go by your full name everywhere you go.

SisterOfDonFrancisco · 07/01/2019 18:17

Any names that are too strongly and negatively connected to another person or an event or memory. I'd always just be making comparisons in my mind.

Fooferella · 07/01/2019 18:19

Shauna/Shawna - I met many nasty girls with the name growing up in Canada. Weirdly, Shona, which is similar and very common in Scotland where I live now, I think is lovely.

MyBreadIsEggy · 07/01/2019 18:20

EnglishRose13 it would be totally outing if I told you the name! Literally my whole home town got wind of the rumours she spread....but at least that’s a thousand-odd people who are also aware she’s partial to stirring the shit pot Grin

I also hate the name “Clementine” - often shorten to “Clem”. In my brain, Clem = Phlegm Confused

I’m half Polish, and there are some truly hideous Polish names - especially for girls! I hear them and my brain conjures up an image of Miss Trunchbull from Matilda Hmm

LynetteScavo · 07/01/2019 18:20

Also Claudia.

DH and I both agreed it's a brilliant name....but not the meaning.

Janice and Elsbeth because I just don't like saying them.

Nigel. Because I didn't like Nigel at school.

Fatasfook · 07/01/2019 18:20

Grace, there are very few accents that say it gracefully

Fanny, obvious reasons

EwItsAHooman · 07/01/2019 18:21

I trust all of you will share the perfect names you've chosen for your own DC so they too can be judged evaluated?

RosemarysBabyDress · 07/01/2019 18:21

any name from an ex boyfriend for me, ex girl friend for DH
any fashionable name from a tv show
George, Charlotte or Louis - too many copycats in the years to come!

names I hate for no particular reason: Susan, Sharon, Janice, Kai, Alfie
Any made-up name: Proseco, Crystal

Name from someone I can't stand, so names are very subjective

Believability · 07/01/2019 18:22

My absolute worst name of all time is Jaxon. I am not a fan of Jackson particularly but the spelling Jaxon just makes me cringe and feel so unbelievably sorry for the kid who is saddled with the name.

I have a huge dislike for the name Scarlett too, I think it’s just so pretentious and just a bit rough

Fusioluxe · 07/01/2019 18:25

Ex fiancé and I planned what to call our future children, as you do. Decided on a particular name for a boy because it was the name of my uncle who died, sort of a tribute. Ex never met my uncle but agreed to the name...

Ex met someone else and dumped me. They had a boy and called him by this name Hmm. I often wonder if his wife knows her son is named after my uncle!

As for names I’d never use, my ex’s Grin, Aurora (try hard and far too many in nursery) Paulina (have known two, both with mean streaks) and Malcolm (again, knew a horrid one!)

NoFucksImAQueen · 07/01/2019 18:26

along the same lines as lana/anal DH has a friend called Isabel and when talking to her the other day I realised... is a bell. I actually like Lana and Isabel so I'm sad they're ruined for me

Flyingfish2019 · 07/01/2019 18:26

Belivability And if Jaxon moves to Saxony he will be known as Jaxon the Saxon which makes it worse.
Oh... and i dislike any place names such as India. That’s ankäme for a place not a person to my mind.

PumpkinKitty82 · 07/01/2019 18:27

Laura- just so plain and boring .
Also any of the old lady names or the middle name “may/Mae”
Why is it so popular ? shudder

Shodan · 07/01/2019 18:29

Karley, Kayleigh, Kim, Katherine (but not Katy), Kylie, Kathleen... I'm sure you can see a theme here! Grin. I don't know why, I've always disliked names beginning with K (although I do know women with 2 of the names mentioned , and I dislike them, which just seems to confirm my completely irrational prejudice).

Also Edna, Edith, Bernard, Blanche etc. 'Old-fashioned' names are rapidly becoming as over-used as any other.

Gormless · 07/01/2019 18:29

Myra, for obvious reasons.

Pippa-makes my toes curl a bit, for no good reason

Gabi or Gabby- just sounds very ‘clumsy’ somehow.

ScrumptiousBears · 07/01/2019 18:36

Anything xxxxx - May or xxxxx -Mai. Over used and a bit common.

Anything misspelt to make it sound unusual.

Also people blatantly copying celebrities. The amount of Harpers in nursery and early school. I'm sure they will say they always liked the name but in reality they probably never heard of it.

In my DD year we have 2 Jacks and 3 Olivers. In my year at school (some years ago now) we had 3 Daniels.

ProfessionallyUnoffended · 07/01/2019 18:39

All hyphen-May names e.g. Chloe-May. Awful!

Kpo58 · 07/01/2019 18:39

I wouldn't name a child after a place, a surname, anything ending with "son" or a name with a Younique spelling. I also hate names starting with Cl, it's like fingernails down a blackboard to me.
