Saw something really horrible

I accidentally clicked on a link to something really awful. I don't want to go into too much detail but it was animal abuse and pretty graphic. (Chinese dog meat trade)

I can't stop thinking about it and it's really upsetting me. I'm not sure how to get it out of my head and didn't sleep much last night because it kept popping into my head.

Any ideas how I can get past it please?

Look at the life of a dairy cow or battery chicken. All horrible.
So much cruelty. Are you feeling fragile about something else and this is triggering? If it won't go away cbt may help privately or thru your gp, but you may find it just fades until you can function ok. Be nice to yourself and ont dwell on it. Samaritans are open 24/7

Missingstreetlife · 07/01/2019 16:50

Human rights not great in china too, quite a brutalised society, tho some gentle and lovely people.

sackrifice · 07/01/2019 16:58

what is your problem? Are you hard of thinking? You seem to be utterly failing to grasp that killing an animal for meat humanely and torturing an animal to death for meat are two utterly different things.

How is killing an animal for meat 'humane' at all?

TheRogueBludger · 07/01/2019 17:03

Trying to get back to the original topic...

OP - you probably wont ever forget those images. I have seen some videos myself (I have an interest in animal welfare), which start to replay in my mind on very rare occasions. I won't be buying crocodile by-products, eating halal meat or watching dolphins perform as a result. There are animal welfare organisations you can support.

Blessthekids · 07/01/2019 17:04

@QuestionableMouse

I second supporting HSI. They along with local animal rights organisations work hard to build awareness of the cruelty, save as many dogs as they can and ban the dog meat trade both in China and South Korea. Take heart, dog meat eating is generally limited to one region in China rather than across the whole country and as the younger generations (who are seeing dogs as pets) grow older it is becoming less and less acceptable.

HirooOnoda · 07/01/2019 17:04

@Missingstreetlife I don’t think anyone was saying that the life of a battery chicken or a diary cow in the UK was anything other than a poor one. The one small concession many posters were looking for was that the life of for example a dairy cow in the UK was likely to be better than a dog bred for meat in China - this is unarguable really which makes it all the more ridiculous that it cannot be agreed on. Instead posters like sackrifice (well actually just sackrifice Grin) decide to respond to questions such as these by throwing lazy and racially aggrevated barbs at other posters

@sackrifice I guess at this point it is clear that the original point is completely secondary to the continued and ultimately pointless back and forth with other posters. This is fine, there is no right or wrong way to approach an Internet forum, people want different things however it does ultimately undermine the original point made if that matters at all any more

You know the OP specifically mentioned the Chinese dog Trade in their OP right? Mine was a response to the OP.

fenneltea · 07/01/2019 17:21

But surely if this is where it is happpening what the heck is she meant to call it? Confused It is well known as the Yulin dog meat festival.

HirooOnoda · 07/01/2019 17:21

@sackrifice and you think referencing something in another country or part of the world is racist? That says more about you and your way of thinking than it does about that poster in question. I think that poster was simply asking whether you think the dog trade in China was more or less humane than say for example the cattle industry in the UK. Nobody suggested that each were without their clear faults however the request was to make the quite straightforward assertion that one was more humane than the other. It’s not rocket science and your attempts to distract from this point by lazily throwing accusations of racism do not reflect at all well on you

Whatsnewwithyou · 07/01/2019 17:27

There are videos of the meat industry in the UK that are horrific and I can't watch them, though. I think the point is that we have to look at ourselves first before criticising practices in other cultures.

The world is just a terrible place in some ways, though, and if we focus too much on the horrors we will drive ourselves mad. I hope you feel a little better, OP.

Not reflect well on me? Who do you think you are? My mum? Why would I care how it reflects well on me, when I have not got personal, not told anyone to fuck off and only talked about the actual topic [killing animals] in the original post?

I think the point is that we have to look at ourselves first before criticising practices in other cultures. Precisely.

NewYorkDoll3 · 07/01/2019 17:36

I am literally cringing at your posts @sackrifice

Seriously, have a nap.

sackrifice · 07/01/2019 17:39

Seriously, have a nap

Is that all you can come up with? Lol. A nap?

LilyMumsnet · 07/01/2019 17:40

Hi folks,

We're getting a lot of reports. Can we cool it off a bit? We don't want to have to delete the entire thread, so let's get things back on track.

sackrifice · 07/01/2019 17:41

I take it nobody reported the OP telling me to fuck off tho, AMIRITE?

HirooOnoda · 07/01/2019 18:08

@Whatsnewwithyou I couldn’t agree more nor is that really the point in question. I have no doubt that there are some vile practices in the UK, I am just equally as sure that the farming of dog meat in China is demonstrably more vile, sadly

QuestionableMouse · 07/01/2019 18:11

@sackrifice

I apologised for that earlier. Feel free to report me.

HirooOnoda · 07/01/2019 18:11

@sackrifice

“Not reflect well on me? Who do you think you are? My mum?” good to see you are still not getting angry Grin

I am sure your mum, if she were here, would be equally as bored of your sniping however she would at least have experience of dealing with it on her side

Ozzie9523 · 07/01/2019 18:15

I totally understand OP, exactly the same thing happened to me last year. One photo I saw on FB and I was in pieces, sobbing in front of my 5 year old daughter. Fur trade in China. The image has stayed with me and I still think about it. A week later we were on a family holiday to disneyworld in Florida and I still got flashbacks. No advice but it does lessen with time. I wish I wasn’t so sensitive to these things. I donate, I sign petitions but I try not to read about it or see pictures, I can’t even read all of this thread. We live in a wicked world and it makes me so sad :( xx

Smotheroffive · 07/01/2019 18:41

No, sack the OP was about trauma of the image. Why don't you see that?

She came looking for support to remove an awful image from her head.

I didn't get that she wanted to talk about meat eating, or ending animal cruelty, but she was shocked by it and needed to get rid of the image as it was so distressing.

What I don't get is how to think she posed to talk about meat eating.

I think you have the wrong thread and are picking fault with those trying to support, and still, derailing, and arguing, to push your own agenda.

Go and make your own thread.

Smotheroffive · 07/01/2019 18:41

*is how you think she posted...

glutenfreepretzel · 08/01/2019 10:12

I had the same issue with a video about dairy cows. I cried, I went vegan overnight (this is years ago). I don't see how dog meat is different from any other meat, and I wish people in the western world would stop eating animals and their secretions. They can't give up 'their meat' or they 'love cheese too much', and it's 'a personal choice'. I don't see how needlessly torturing animals is a personal choice but hey.

Whatsnewwithyou · 21/01/2019 15:27

I saw this cartoon and couldn't help but think of this thread...it sums it up for me, really.
