To be upset with Royal Mail? I've lost £350!

ALittleCrisp · 05/01/2019 09:21

I purchase a phone on eBay but it hasn't arrived. I know the seller is a good one because he has 1000 of positive reviews and it's PayPal so my money is secure if things go wrong.

However, Royal Mail say they've delivered my phone when they have not. They sent an email to say they'd be delivering, and then they never delivered. But, I got another email that same evening saying it had been delivered Confused

What do I do?

Royal Mail website says to contact the seller but this is obviously not the sellers fault. I don't want to cause a rift with someone on eBay for £350, it's a lot of money and I feel terrible since it wasn't there fault.

AIBU to be annoyed at Royal Mail?

You need to contact ebay and open a dispute case. There are systems in place for when this sort of thing happens.

IceRebel · 06/01/2019 18:31

*their not there Smile

BlackPrism · 06/01/2019 18:31

They always do this with me Angry the drivers signs it as delivered ( I assume to hit targets) and restarts the process and delivers the next day.

Ethel80 · 06/01/2019 18:32

You've contacted the seller so the next step is to open a case with eBay.

fascicle · 06/01/2019 18:35

It feels like Royal Mail should be able to give better details of the delivery - confirmation of house number and street delivered to and whether the item was passed to an individual or left at the property. Seems woefully inadequate that they have 'confirmed delivery' and that seller has placed the onus on the OP to ask neighbours.

Princessmushroom · 06/01/2019 18:36

Hi, husband runs a full time eBay business.

So many things could have happened here and I would say your next step is to open a case on eBay.

The seller is an IDIOT for not sending it guaranteed signed for. It’s like £8.

Things like this do happen, so open your case and let it go through the process. You will likely lose.
Then you move on to PayPal.

I’ve got an old smart phone to list tonight on eBay and i hate how rife it is with scammers.

Gth1234 · 06/01/2019 18:37

royal mail delivered an expensive package to me that should have been signed for. It wouldn't go through the letter box, and they left it half out of the letter box. I got it ok, but not happy. I prefer to use click and collect Argos, if I can.

Gth1234 · 06/01/2019 18:40

the trouble is that properly insured signed for deliveries aren't just a couple of quid, so someone is taking a risk with nay high value item.

nauticant · 06/01/2019 18:46

My understanding OP is you can only have one case either with eBay or Paypal and once that case has been concluded that closes the matter both for eBay and Paypal.

Aeroflotgirl · 06/01/2019 19:01

The seller without signed for, has no proof that it has been delivered, it is their word against yours. As they were stupid to not have special delivery for a high priced item, they loose out. I would contact e bay, op.

wombatsandaplant · 06/01/2019 19:05

Contact the local depot and they should be able to check by gps approximately where it was marked as delivered.

DemToes · 06/01/2019 19:08

Postie up thread may be able to confirm, but I read somewhere when they scan the tracking number it registers the GPS coordinates of the delivery address/point of scan. eBay seller will have to do contact RM to find out the GPS location of delivery.

kingsleysbootlicker · 06/01/2019 19:14

This happened to me, it turned out the postie had delivered it to the wrong street, so they marked it delivered because they thought it had been. The person it was delivered to came to my door with it about a week later thankfully, but I've no idea how I could have proven it wasn't delivered to my address if they hadn't. Hopefully Ebay will step in and you'll get your money back

lololove · 06/01/2019 19:17

Thats true DemToes, I was just about to say that.

We had a parcel and the woman posted it to the same road but the number was wrong. This was her mistake but she was adamant that it had been delivered to the right number but she couldn't provide tracking proof to show where it had gone and was adamant that we were lying about not having it.

After a few emails, RM managed to track the co-ordinates and it was at lets say 12 instead of 120.

Unfortunately Mr 12 wasn't quite honest and said he hadn't received it and denied all knowledge but eBay refunded once RM confirmed to them (via a scanned letter on RM headed paper (they also posted me the letter incase it was needed) that it wasn't delivered here.

Aeroflotgirl · 06/01/2019 19:22

My road goes round in a horseshoe, one half being my road, the other half, another road. I am constantly getting number 36 Smith road mail, despite being in number 36 brown road

hamptonmummy · 06/01/2019 19:23

Only the seller can make the claim as they purchased the postage. I had exact same problem new postman left loads of stuff on my doorstep which then got moved by the guy in a wheelchair who lives above me as he wouldn't be able to get past then the crack addicts opened & had a rummage luckily nothing they could sell on easily one of the few nice neighbours noticed & took my stuff in but I was livid with royal mail. But if anything was missing it would have been the eBay seller I'd need to contact despite the issue being royal mail & mostly scummy neighbours !!

nauticant · 06/01/2019 19:23

If you have no luck with Royal Mail at your end OP, then you might need the seller's cooperation to try to resolve this. That's why upthread I said that it might be best to hold off opening a case for the moment. Many eBay sellers are willing to help but shut down and just do the minimum following the process once a case is opened.

Aeroflotgirl · 06/01/2019 19:27

When wrong mail is delivered to me, i put it back in the post box, or of postie hands it to me, I check the number and name first and handit back.

Vivianebrezilletbrooks · 06/01/2019 19:35

Sellers responsibility. It should have been sent special delivery at that cost!
Call Royal Mail customer support.
I had an issue with an item off eBay over Christmas and New Year and I'd never had a card through. Turns out that Royal Mail royally cocked it up. They claimed it was for no 4 not for me at 41 yet it was sent back to the sender and it had the right house number on it after all as they seller sent me a pic of the label!!!!
I would have got it if the postie hadn't done knock door run when number 4 redirected it.
The card had gone to no 4!
Kinda defeats the object of getting extra staff to help out over the festive season when they cock up like that!!!!
Call them and ask if they can call the delivery office for you, they're not supposed to but they can.
I'm waiting for mine to be redelivered Tuesday.
Contact the seller first though before calling Royal mail.
Good luck, I hope you can track it down and get it.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/01/2019 19:40

As they were stupid to not have special delivery for a high priced item, they loose out

Not necessarily, if they're one of the countless ebayer traders selling fakes they may not have "lost" very much at all, even if ebay were to refund OP

The possibility of a fake would also explain why they weren't bothered enough to send it "signed for" in the first place

ALittleCrisp · 06/01/2019 19:45

Just a thought
Is you paypal address correct?

It is, yes. But thank you, didn't think of checking before

Op have you checked with the sorting office / post office. Lots of posters have said this is where there parcels have been when marked as delivered but they've not got them.

Will ring local sorting office tomorrow morning

OP posts:
Aeroflotgirl · 06/01/2019 19:48

The customers still have to be refunded if it hasen't been delivered, e bay or Paypal would refund and then get the funds from the seller.

winniestone37 · 06/01/2019 20:21

If it wasn't properly tracked it's not your problem I'm afraid. I'm a seller and for something of that value it would be a courier with the full cost insured. If not just not your problem.

IceRebel · 06/01/2019 20:28

Will ring local sorting office tomorrow morning

Make sure to ask about GPS co-ordinates if they're not able to find it., but hopefully the parcel will still be there waiting for you. They keep parcels for 18 days so you're still in time.

TatianaLarina · 06/01/2019 23:01

Contact the local depot and they should be able to check by gps approximately where it was marked as delivered.

That’s worth knowing, thanks.
