To be upset with Royal Mail? I've lost £350!

I purchase a phone on eBay but it hasn't arrived. I know the seller is a good one because he has 1000 of positive reviews and it's PayPal so my money is secure if things go wrong.

However, Royal Mail say they've delivered my phone when they have not. They sent an email to say they'd be delivering, and then they never delivered. But, I got another email that same evening saying it had been delivered Confused

What do I do?

Royal Mail website says to contact the seller but this is obviously not the sellers fault. I don't want to cause a rift with someone on eBay for £350, it's a lot of money and I feel terrible since it wasn't there fault.

AIBU to be annoyed at Royal Mail?

RM do a service which is called "tracked 24 (or 48)" which doesn't actually mean anything. It doesn't require a signature just delivery so I that case it just says "delivered" not who to.

I know it's a a bit late for the OP but...

If purchasing something expensive you need ensure special delivery, at least request it, and they need to say what it is worth at the time of sending, you can no longer claim up to a random amount as people were claiming hundreds when sending things that weren't worth that. Signed for I don't think has the insurance element but at least needs a signature.

Years ago I purchased an item from amazon which RM claimed I'd recieved. It was sent signed for. The signature wasn't mine or anyone in my buildings - it was clearly another name (and not mine!). RM then told me it could be anywhere along my road (which is three miles long!). Eventually i got the item free of charge from Amazon, but RM were very unhelpful. It was fortunately obvious to Amazon it hadn't been given to me.

Becca19962014 · 05/01/2019 10:16

Do contact the seller to resolve it.

Also, just to be clear I wasn't blaming the op in my last. Just giving my similar experience!

MrsSchadenfreude · 05/01/2019 10:25

Claim on your credit card. Ebay refused to refund me when Parcelforce delivered a duvet to completely the wrong address and it was signed for by someone who wasn't me. Parcelforce wrote to Ebay to say it was their fault as they had delivered to the wrong address, and they still wouldn't refund me, as the delivery was signed for. I finally got the money back from my credit card.

PattiStanger · 05/01/2019 10:26

Regardless of the Ebay technicalities why wouldnt you as a buyer ask for signed for delivery. Why risk the hassle that the op has now got for the sake of asking for it to be sent tracked? It's OK to apply common sense when using ebay you know.

TatianaLarina · 05/01/2019 10:38

Their tracked 24/48 also has a signed for service.

OP just report to the seller and it’s up to them to sort it out. If they’re a pro or experienced seller it will have been insured.

TatianaLarina · 05/01/2019 10:40

! I do have a tracking number. But it isn't signed for

When you put the tracking number into the Royal Mail tracker does it list the address it was delivered to?

Reallybadidea · 05/01/2019 10:44

No. If I buy from anywhere else online I don't check exactly what their delivery service is, I just pay the delivery fee. Why would eBay be any different?

TatianaLarina · 05/01/2019 10:47

Some sellers don’t offer tracked delivery. It’s entirely up to them how they organise their deliveries. If an item doesn’t arrive it’s the seller’s responsibility not the buyers.

Becca19962014 · 05/01/2019 10:50

tatiana thanks for the correction. I wasn't aware of this as my experience of it is it doesn't require a signature.

Haworthia · 05/01/2019 10:51

This is 100% the seller’s problem to sort out. If the phone is lost then the seller is out of pocket, not you.

You need to open an “item not received” case with eBay and take it from there.

PoutySprout · 05/01/2019 11:19

It's OK to apply common sense when using ebay you know

Given how rife mobile phone scamming is on eBay, the common sense thing to do would be to not buy phones from eBay.

Canyerjustfixthis · 05/01/2019 11:25

The OP’s problem is the tracking says it has been delivered which is all PayPal and eBay will consider if she opens a case? How do they prove otherwise or persuade the seller they haven’t received it and go to the hassle of chasing it up with RM? As a seller myself this would ring alarm bells to me, not that I’m suggesting that the OP is trying it on but they need advice on how to prove they’ve not actually received it.

Becca19962014 · 05/01/2019 13:33

canyer that's the problem I had. I was very lucky someone actually wrote their name instead of signing for it and that was accepted as proof.

If there is no signature then that will be a problem for the OP.

ALittleCrisp · 05/01/2019 20:15

If there is no signature then that will be a problem for the OP

Surely that would be a problem for the seller? Since there's no signed proof that I have it

OP posts:
Becca19962014 · 05/01/2019 20:23

The reason I said that was there's no signed proof you don't have it either and, you aren't trying to scam the person who sold it. I should have said could be a problem not will be, so my apologies for that.

That's not to say I think you're doing that! It's just that was the experience I had.

PoutySprout · 05/01/2019 20:30

OP - WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PUT THE TRACKING NUMBER INTO THE ROYAL MAIL WEBSITE????!!!!!

ALittleCrisp · 05/01/2019 20:36

Becca Oh no offence taken! I didn't think you were implying that at all. It was a valid point

Pouty this is what happens when you enter the tracking number on the RM website

To be upset with Royal Mail? I've lost £350!
OP posts:
Sindragosan · 05/01/2019 20:44

PayPal will refund you. It's the seller's responsibility to get the item to you and for a £350 item they should be sending special delivery which requires a signature and is insured up to £500.

PayPal won't consider anything without a signature as proof of delivery (much to many peoples disgust).

Becca19962014 · 05/01/2019 20:46

Ok so looks like they used the one without a signature being needed then. Hope you can sort it.

Helipad · 05/01/2019 20:48

If your order tracking says delivered, then seller has fulfilled his/hers obligation and I don't think Ebay will side with you. You will need to contact RM to raise a case for a stolen item.

ALittleCrisp · 05/01/2019 20:51

Hel Royal Mail state on their website that it's now down to the seller and that the seller need to sort it with RM

OP posts:
TatianaLarina · 05/01/2019 20:52

It doesn’t say who it was delivered to. It doesn’t list the address, there’s no signature (obviously) so I’d think Royal Mail would have to prove it was delivered to the correct address.

TatianaLarina · 05/01/2019 20:54

As if didn’t arrive with you it clearly wasn’t delivered to the right address so RM are at fault. (Bloody stupid system anyway). So yeah it’s the seller’s problem to resolve with RM.

ChrisjenAvasarala · 05/01/2019 21:03

Check all around you house. Bins, garden, plant pots etc. The tracked 24 service doesn’t need a signature, they just scan the barcode when delivering.

If you can, stay in on Monday and look for the postman, then go out and ask him where he delivered the parcel. If could be hidden somewhere or with another address. You might be able ti actually get it without going through the hassle of a claim.

If you can’t find it, then raise a case on eBay, the seller should have sent it using a signed for service but didn’t. That’s their choice, they cannot provide it was delivered and eBay require a signature so you will win your case.

Imalittleelf · 05/01/2019 21:04

Check your electricity and gas meter boxes.... one delivery company carry keys with them for those boxes and stash parcels in there
