To think buying a £52 eyeshadow pallet for 9 year old is just madness?

I'm talking about the James Charles pallet. £52 for eyeshadow and blusher. My DD9 wants to spend her Christmas money on it but I have said a firm NO! A lot of her friends got it for Christmas (I know this is true as have seen their mothers show it off on Facebook). Each to their own and all that but £52! AIBU?

I wouldn’t have let my daughters wear makeup at nine. Children are sexualised too early without endorsing it.

londonrach · 04/01/2019 22:17

Abit surprised at 9. My 10 year old neice and her friends didnt get make up or even ask. Take it its a brand. Tempted to say her money her choice buts its alot of money on an idea that a 9 year old doesnt need. Superdrug does some cheapies to play witn

indecisivepigeon · 04/01/2019 22:17

It’s funny, I work with a guy and he was talking just before Christmas that he’d dropped his daughter off at Nandos or somewhere like that for a date and she’d dolled herself up.

Turns out his daughter is 10.

I could barely hide my horror. Aged 10, wearing make up and going on unchaperoned “dates” to restaurants. He laughed that she’d “shared a kiss” with the 10 year old boy.

I know I’ve gone off on a tangent but my god why can’t children just be children?

My eyes were well and truly opened when this guy was telling me about his darling daughter Hmm

Lovemusic33 · 04/01/2019 22:17

As I said on another thread “I am happy for my dd’s To spend their money on what they like as long as it’s age appropriate” , expensive make up is no appropriate for a 9 year old so I would be saying ‘no’.

kmc1111 · 04/01/2019 22:18

Morphe is absolute garbage and this particular palette got appalling reviews from everyone who wasn’t too scared of being harassed by JC and his minions, so at £52 I think I’d see if I could convince her to buy a good palette that’s actually worth that price.

But if you can’t, it’s her money and she should be allowed to spend it on what she wants.

OhTheRoses · 04/01/2019 22:19

This isn't about make-up. It's about the sort of children and families she's being educated with.

Completely senseless. Let them experiment a bit, let them have fun at parties. But mothers help and help with wise choices like free gifts, sale bargains and keep the budgets realistic. And pass on some of their free gifts.

Absurd.

SoundsExciting · 04/01/2019 22:19

ow! I presume she's also got primer, at least 3 eye brushes and mascara? If not why the hell get something SO expensive? Certainly it would be a waist of money if she buys a good pallet but does not have the tools or skills to use it.

delboysskinandblister · 04/01/2019 22:19

i wasn't allowed stuff just because friends had it. don't let her have it.
It's inapropriate for a 9 year old. She can buy it when she's older.

Booboostwo · 04/01/2019 22:20

Of course you should let her buy it. Not only is it her money but it’s a completely idiotic purchase and unless she makes mistakes, buying idiotic stuff, she won’t leant to manage her money sensibly. If you don’t let her buy it, it will be the most amazing thing she never got to have. If you let her waste a huge amount of money on it, it will be a mistake she will learn from. I’d not only let her buy it, i would never let her forget her decision to buy it.

dawnc27 · 04/01/2019 22:21

sign up on the morphe website and they will send an email when back in stock and that way you know its a real palette and not a copy

nc555666666 · 04/01/2019 22:21

My 13 yo wanted this. I'd never heard of it before? We looked at the colours together and I pointed out it was her Xmas money so she could if wanted but on this occasion I thought it would be a waste. She thought about it and bought something else instead.

BunsOfAnarchy · 04/01/2019 22:22

9 is way too young for a pro eyeshadow pallette.
If shes only using it for play makeovers then its a waste of money anyway.

Nottheduchessofcambridge · 04/01/2019 22:22

Why not take her to Boots so she can see other cheaper pallets, and see that she can get more for her money.

I personally think that's too expensive for a 9 year old. I'm guessing she wants the pallet because she likes James? Rather than wanting the palette because she's into expensive makeup. He has lots of other merch, like hoodies and t-shirts. They're not exactly cheap, but I think it's more age appropriate for someone her age and a hoodie can last a long time. If it really is the makeup she wants, maybe try and find an alternative palette with similar colours.

Betty777 · 04/01/2019 22:28

I don't think that at 9years old she can decide to spend 'her' money on whatever she wants. if she wanted to spent it all at McDonalds/on chocolate/sweets you wouldn't allow it. It's probably a good thing to teach her now that £52 is an obscene amount of money for a 9 year old to spend on makeup. if she's only wearing it occasionally for dress up she surely only needs a few cheap bits.

I was the kid who pined after everything my friends were allowed. I am grateful now that I wasn't allowed them, it really taught me how to make my own money go further

pineapplepenthouse · 04/01/2019 22:28

As I said in my original post I've already said no, I just really wondered if anyone else agreed with me.
We live in a small village so not much choice of friends around the same age! Most of them are older than my daughter as she's a December birthday so a lot of them about to turn 10. I think that extra year makes a big difference.
She certainly doesn't have the skills or tools to use it and I keep imagining it getting dropped on the bathroom floor!
I think I'm going to stick with no and try get her to try some of the other pallets suggested.

*palette not pallet even lol

gamerwidow · 04/01/2019 22:29

I normally am a big advocate of children buying what they like with their money but it has to be age appropriate and ‘proper’ makeup isn’t age appropriate.

Lovemusic33 · 04/01/2019 22:31

zzzzz I agree, 9 year olds should not be wearing make up and deffently shouldn’t be wearing expensive make up. I would be embarrassed to take a 9 year old to a party wearing make up. My 14 year old doesn’t wear make up (her choice).

user1468942365 · 04/01/2019 22:31

Never heard of it until this. Looking at it, it looks like children's play make up anyway. Very expensive children's play make up...

pineapplepenthouse · 04/01/2019 22:31

@leftovercoffeecake I wrote pallet too 😳😂.

It's only £39 on cult beauty. Join the waitlist and you'll get it pretty quickly. DD(17) got it last night.

crazycatgal · 04/01/2019 22:33

Why the hell are 9 year olds wearing make-up?

I say this as someone who is very into makeup myself. 9 is ridiculously young.

Foamybanana93 · 04/01/2019 22:34

To be honest is there any point in her spending that kind of money on a pro palette if she’s probably not going to use it properly ? Does she even know how to apply makeup properly ? At 9 my mum wouldn’t have dared let me wear makeup Shock
