OP posts:
planespotting · 03/01/2019 22:51

Not really poor, that was bad choice of words and disrespectful actually. Low salary.

Athena51 · 03/01/2019 22:51

I work in higher education quality assurance. I'm a total HE geek and I love it. I've recently been offered a promotion in a different organisation that will put me at the heart of HE and I am so freaking excited about it Smile

MyPatronusIsABadger · 03/01/2019 22:53

Qualified librarian which was an interesting job but not what I thought it would be then went into construction project management which was a 1.5 hr commute each way and stressful but a great team.
DH passed away and I’m now admin doing a “clock in/clock out”, no stress or taking work home job 20 minutes pleasant walk from home. (As I don’t want any stress-although pay is £19k for an expensive part of the country)

Grumpos · 03/01/2019 22:54

@leslieYep
What an interesting job!!! Just out of curiosity do you mean you read WhatsApps on phones you are searching? Not the data itself? That’s encrypted right? Was arguing with a family member over this recently - curious!

jmh740 · 03/01/2019 22:55

1:1 ta to a child with special needs, I love my job and everyday is different I don't like being on a temporary contract though

BloomsButtons · 03/01/2019 22:55

I'm a teacher and in my spare time (ha!) I also have a volunteer role working with young people.

Pinkyyy · 03/01/2019 22:57

Dance teacher / choreographer / professional dancer

Highpeak · 03/01/2019 22:57

Development Scientist in a small biotechnology company focusing on genetic testing. I enjoy it most of the time, it's a young company with exciting prospects.

@Crimson72 I studied Law at Uni but decided I didn’t want to argue for a living. My professor suggested I look into Compliance which was an emerging market (this was ten years ago) and it was solid advice- I graduated and walked straight into a 25k pharma role, and I’ve never struggled to find work, in all industries.

As I said though, I can never tell if I’m glad I’m in this line of work. I have never suffered from stress, never take my work home with me, always clock out at 5pm on the dot and take my full lunch hour every day. But I do also feel quite unfulfilled most days. Depends what’s important to you I suppose- I’ve decided to prioritise money and my work life balance, but I do envy people who love their job.

What do you do?

AnneElliott · 03/01/2019 23:00

Civil servant in a central Government department. I love my job - have had about 11 roles in almost 20 years.

Flexi time and generous annual leave and flexible for working from home etc.

I work in finance at the moment and there are points in the year when it is manic, but I wouldn't do anything else.

TokyoSushi · 03/01/2019 23:01

PA, 20 minute commute, reasonably well paid, flexible hours, love it.

KatyaZamolodchikova · 03/01/2019 23:01

I work in HR, for a utilities company. My commute used to be the same as yours OP, total 3 hrs a day five days a week, but now it’s a total of 20 minutes when I’m working from my base office. I do have to travel to meetings across the county (and it’s a big one!) so usually average around 500 work miles a month outside of my commute. I don’t mind too much though, as I manage my own time & the scenery is stunning. It’s quite nice to get out and about and I usually manage to avoid rush hours!

AnnAbbieLian · 03/01/2019 23:03

I always feel like if I ever get another real job I’d like to do demolition but mostly because I watched a YouTube video where a demolition team sledgehammered the walls of a house and I was in awe. Just oh yeah baby that looks so fun!

I imagine the actual backbreaking labour aspect of it might be less enjoyable in the long run.

Maybe explosives based demolition, that would be rad.

DumDumgirl82 · 03/01/2019 23:06

Community mental health nurse with older adults. Love it x

NorthEndGal · 03/01/2019 23:07

Make seaglass and driftwood art and decor

BeBaBoBa · 03/01/2019 23:08

English Teacher. Paid for 4 days. Work 6. Ok pay. Great holidays.

dinnafashsassenach · 03/01/2019 23:11

Nurse. It's utterly back breaking and thankless.

Pobblit · 03/01/2019 23:11

Teaching Assistant.

Local primary school, at the end of my street. Literally a 3 Mon walk!

Increasingly stressful, more and more pressure being put on, more demands and higher expectations. I'm sometimes left alone to deal with the whole class on my own.

The above issues are making me resent the job more each day. Despite working full time I don't even earn enough to pay tax. The low pay really is a hard pill to swallow.

I feel trapped in the job due to several complex personal reasons.

I'm not happy Sad

Worsethingshappenatsea · 03/01/2019 23:20

Bank manager in a high street bank. 20 minute walk to my current branch have had commutes of up to an hour each way in the past. Pretty stressful at times but pays quite well get an annual bonus too.

OccasionallyIncomplet · 03/01/2019 23:22

Senior Police Officer.

mrsnoodle55 · 03/01/2019 23:26

Paramedic with the NHS. Qualified 20 yrs ago this year, and seriously thinking I need to lay plans to get out esp as we’ve to work ‘til 67 yrs old. The job has changed A LOT recently, unfortunately.

Lulutheboss · 03/01/2019 23:27

Chemistry teacher. Reasonable pay for four days a week. Pretty miserable at the moment.

notsosureaboutthatthough · 03/01/2019 23:27

Where’s all the people that work in Asda’s and McDonalds, cleaners, carers and taxi drivers at 😂

DerelictWreck · 03/01/2019 23:30

@athena51

Who do you work for? Three letter anagram?

I'm in Higher Education policy

onlymyselftoanswerto1 · 03/01/2019 23:30

@PearlandRubies194 oh brilliant, good luck in your PhD, is it on dv or something else? Christmas is crazy in our place too, very tough time of year. I've 3 assignments due in on Monday so I've had a few days off to get on top of those, dreading what awaits me when I get back!
