I'm a registered nurse-I've worked on inpatient hospital wards for 20 years. When I graduated college I had to take a night shift position initially as only experienced nurses could work day shift back then. I've learned so much about nursing, connecting with others be it patients, family members or coworkers. I make an excellent salary and I know I make a difference every day I work. It's a demanding, stressful, exhausting job and not everyone can do it but well worth it IMO.

Sinuhe · 04/01/2019 18:09

I'm a translator & work ft for a company in e-commerce.
(In other words, I translate & describe items for sale on various websites. It's fun and can be very satisfying.)
Wage is decent and I can work from home 3-4 days per week.

PumpkinPie2016 · 04/01/2019 18:17

I am a secondary science teacher with additional responsibility. I am on quite good money now as I have moved up the scale a few points and get paid extra for my responsibility.

I work 20-25 mins from home on local roads (no motorway) which suits me fine. I'm far too lazy to consider a commute of an hour+Grin

I like the school as a whole, the head is nice and the kids are mostly great. The dept has had a very tough few years though and we are still coming out of the other side so it's quite stressful in that respect. Workload is crazy at times and I am quite self critical so always feel I could do more which can be hard to manage.

My holidays match my son's school so that is an added bonus.

Carer of 2 DC with ASD, PTA treasurer and volunteer with the national trust in an educational role.

Believability · 04/01/2019 18:23

I’m part of the senior managment team for a national charity. I absolutely love it. Was a SAHM mum for a few years before taking a part time job because I was bored and it went from there.

I love it, it’s pressured and challenging but really interesting and I couldn’t imagine being in any other sector. I work 4 days a week but have lots of flexibility to WFH and it’s pretty well paid too.

catgirl1976 · 04/01/2019 18:35

Timyytoo good for you! How brilliant to hear someone who is so happy and overcome so much. You boast away it sounds amazing :)

LetMeBe · 04/01/2019 18:52

I work in customer support for a well known online company, 20 hrs a week from home. Perfect for me with 2 school aged children.

WWlOOlWW · 04/01/2019 20:49

Full time social worker with children in care. 20+ years in the field. Love it today as much as I did on my first day.

Also a full time mum.

I love seeing all these amazing roles held by women. Inspiring.

You know those little, free magazines that drop through your letterbox full of local plumbers, home helps, gardeners, etc? That's me. I work from home with hours to suit and can work around DC. Not rich, not poor. Feel content...

Cafeaulait27 · 04/01/2019 23:30

I feel like I don’t earn enough for my age looking at all these high flying careers 🙈 I’m really pleased for you all though, it’s great seeing there’s so many successful women.

I live in Sussex and only earn £27k, it’s the best paid job I’ve had but still not enough. My husband earns the same ish. Neither of us have progressed to management level yet.

I’m 30 and starting to freak out. I graduated from uni late at 23, had £30k debt which costs me £60 of my wage every month. And I’m in a job thats nothing to do with my degree 😬😬😬😬

Paramedic. Love my job despite all the cutbacks and increasing demand on us.

linnyb71 · 04/01/2019 23:56

I work in retail. Was a supervisor running shifts at poundworld having worked my way up from sales assistant . Absolutely gutted when they closed down. And I miss it terribly still, met some lovely people there and we were really close, sounds like a cliché but we really were like a family. The job was fast paced and very varied, no two days were the same. Was out of work for about 3 weeks then got another job, retail again, but in a supermarket this time. Back to being a sales assistant again, but was greatful I was offered another job so quickly. Still finding my feet there, it's so much bigger, and totally different to my old job. I was interested too to see all these fantastic jobs that people have. I can't be the only one on here in retail surely? Lol

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/01/2019 00:00

NHS Podiatrist

The job is changing , more demands , we are now all on computer not paper (which has streamlined a lot but brings its own issues wth the system)

I prefer clinic to home visits , I;m getting to old for that. The parking, driving round , carting all my equipment , working in a home situation is different to clinic

It is interesting as every patient is different , most are lovely , a few are erm not . But I;m a Professional and I will be unerringly polite even though I;m biting my cheeks to stop myself screaming out loud (one day I will call someone CuntyChops and I;ll blame MN for given me the idea)

Anyat212 · 05/01/2019 00:00

@Cafeaulait27

I wouldn’t worry that you don’t earn enough, the average uk salary is £26,000 I’m sure? I’m on £27,000 per year & I’m a HR Advisor although based in the North East! I’m almost 27 with a LO one the way & it suits me and DP (he’s the breadwinner), I enjoy my job despite the frustrations (everyone has them I guess!)

I know it’s easy to look at this thread and compare, just remember its the best paid role so far & you’ve worked hard for your degree you should be really proud Smile plenty of time to move up the career ladder! That’s what I tell myself anyway x

WontonSoupForTheSoul · 05/01/2019 00:01

I work in HR in a very niche role. I spend a lot of time negotiating, and in labour courts. I absolutely love it. Hours are long, but the pay is very good and I practically skip in to work each morning. 20 min walk to work, and I can WFH when I need to.

OvertiredandConfused · 05/01/2019 01:13

Charity Chief Executive. We’re an independent healthcare provider as well as a charity so highly regulated and it’s a fairly high pressure role. I work about 50 hours a week at the moment (but have done many more). Salary is good and despite the long hours, other than being on permanent call for major incidents, I can be pretty flexible. I do my best to be as flexible as possible with my staff too. I love my job because I know we make a real difference to people’s lives

N3wDiary19 · 05/01/2019 01:28

Job 1 engineer FT shifts, Job 2 self employed

vodkaredbullgirl · 05/01/2019 01:31

Senior carer on nights, in a dementia home. I do 12 1/2 hour shifts, 3 one week and 4 another.

Soyalatteforme · 05/01/2019 08:02

Lawyer, outside of city so not mega bucks but well paid. I work FT and do two long days 7am-8pm and 3 shorter days 8.30-5.30 plus some weekend working when it’s really busy. I’m starting to resent the hours as I have a young family so I’m looking to my move in house where the hours tend to be less punishing. Hate bloody time recording too. Love the mental stretch and am proud of where I’ve reached as I’m close to Partnership.
