Can you be too old to dress a certain way?

I've tried out quite a few different looks. Mostly alternative but settled into a "I can't really be arsed" look at the moment.
I miss my amazing outfits and loving my wardrobe, I'm literally a leggings and plain, baggy(ish) dress person at the moment. While it's comfortable it doesn't really do anything for me and I feel like my personality isn't coming through.
I miss my alternative style, mixing things up, feeling confident and just living what I wear.
He's the problem, I keep coming back to a gothic/Victorian type style.
I love it, I love the lace, I love the shape, my head just keeps screaming I want it and I want it now.
I'm going to be 27 this year and a mom of 2.
Am I being ridiculous? I've attached pictures of the clothes I want.
You only live once and all that.
What do you guys think?
I'm worried if I'm already feeling a bit hesitant about the comments I might get (I have low self esteem and high anxiety) then I might already be setting myself up to fail. But on the other hand I want to express myself, experiment and give it a go.
You only live once after all.
Imagine with tights, or black skinny jeans, a nice pair of ankle boots.
It won't all scream gothic, but a nice nod to the culture I grew up with and have always loved.

You are on this planet once, for a relatively short time. Who cares about what society/other women deem to be acceptable clothing? Wear whatever you want. Alternative styles can attract attention, but it’s attention on your terms and you know exactly how you want to look, so allow yourself to be you!

ManicUnicorn · 02/01/2019 12:51

It's funny isn't it that men are never told they are too old to wear something. It's like once we women hit a certain age we're supposed to start wearing beige cardigans and long pleated skirts from Bon Marche

chezbot · 02/01/2019 12:55

I'm 40 and my most prized Christmas gift was a lace pirate coat. I bet your wardrobe is fabulous OP. Wear it with pride

Cheekysquirrel · 02/01/2019 12:57

I’m 36 and feel like lots of clothes are too young for me now. I’m trapped between top shop and m&s although realistically I’m probably more the m&s end these days.
But those sorts of clothes probably don’t have an age exactly? You could wear them whenever? They are great!

BIWI · 02/01/2019 13:36

@Snuffalo

Those clothes read “52 year old dinner lady on a weekend trip to Whitby” to me, so you’re at no risk whatsoever of looking like mutton dressed as lamb.

The phrase 'so you're at no risk' is the telling one - clearly saying that's something the OP doesn't want to look like. So your post was not about being factual. Stop with the faux ignorance.

elQuintoConyo · 02/01/2019 13:37

I have a lack lace nightie that I wear as a dress and I'm 43 Grin

Lweji · 02/01/2019 13:54

It's funny isn't it that men are never told they are too old to wear something.

I'm pretty sure that they are, but men tend to be more conservative anyway.

Lweji · 02/01/2019 13:56

I bet your wardrobe is fabulous OP.

Wasn't the point of the OP that her wardrobe isn't fabulous (yet)?

PineapplePower · 02/01/2019 14:02

It's funny isn't it that men are never told they are too old to wear something.

Because they usually are poorly dressed anyway.

Barbarina · 02/01/2019 14:04

I'd be more concerned that you spell "mum", "mom" than what you want to wear.

It's cool, go fo it (the clothes, not the spelling obv).

FlissMumsnet · 02/01/2019 14:05

Hi Everyone,

We think there's an interesting discussion to be had here so please can we remind everyone to keep things civil and post within our TGs.

We don't want to be deleting posts for ageism or personal attacks.

Here's some Cake for 2019

MawkishTwaddle · 02/01/2019 14:09

I’ll just leave this here.

what should women over 30 wear

MsHopey · 02/01/2019 14:12

'd be more concerned that you spell "mum", "mom" than what you want to wear.

West Midlands here 🙋🏻‍♀️
Pretty sure it's come up on a few different threads that it's Mom round here for most.
Mum looks and sounds weird to me!

im 62 and would wear those clothes if my friends were gothy as it happens they are bikers so i wear jeans tee shirts with skulls skeletons, grim reapers, and gothic angels on them, and have hair half way down my back i dont care and no i dont look like mutton dressed as

goose1964 · 02/01/2019 14:24

I thought you going to say in you 50s, 27 is nothing. i love those items and would happily wear them if I was thinner

BiffChipandNipples · 02/01/2019 14:26

MawkishTwaddle-absolutely yes to every one of those looks. I love seeing ‘older’ people out and about in non-typical i
Op-wear what you want whether you are 27 or 97.
I love a bit of leopard, bold colours and big jewellery, but I tend to wear trainers or big boots. I am dyeing my greys a lovely pinky/red colour and I have re-introduced a rucksack to my life this year and i have loved it. The good thing (for me) now that I am older is that I can afford stuff I like and if I like it I will buy it with my own money. No guilt, no scrimping just cos I feel like it.

mabelstanley · 02/01/2019 14:26

You're only 27! You can wear what you like, as with any age but I would say in your twenties is the time to be experimenting and having fun with clothes.

MotherofDinosaurs · 02/01/2019 15:26

Dressing your age is bullshit.

I'm 39 and I dress quirky. Nothing drab. I get loads of compliments.

I've never understood why people worry about what other people think of their clothes!

Buzzzzzzz · 02/01/2019 16:05

I’m the same age as you, heavily pregnant and still wear that stuff when I find a piece I can still fit into OP, the corsets have had to take a back seat for now but I have a fish tail coat I’m still rather too fond of that I can just lace the front of that makes me feel like me Grin

At the minute I’m in the stretchier tops / dresses with my skirts, tights and boots still fitting fine.

I will admit as I’ve got older there are some things I tone down my style for - I wouldn’t wear my fancy clothes fishing or hill walking or on the bike with my husband of course (although with the bike at least I get to dress up cool in a different way) but I wear it about the house, around town, and all the rest of the time. There is no reason not to and I won’t stop when the baby is here either.

I don’t think you grow out of a style, you just adapt it to suit your situation.

My husband dresses in an alternative style too - I love his waistcoats, pocket watches and too hats Grin
Don’t be afraid to do you OP

Butchyrestingface · 02/01/2019 16:11

OP is actually a mere slip of 26, not 27.

Wear whatever you want, OP.

fantasmasgoria1 · 02/01/2019 16:12

I'm a 43,a goth and I have no plans to stop dressing this way!

ChristmasFluff · 02/01/2019 17:26

Goth here, almost 54 and no intention of giving up any time soon.

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 02/01/2019 17:36

I think they're beautiful, @MsHopey!!!! GO FOR IT!!!!! Star

OrangeJellySpread · 02/01/2019 17:39

If we are the same the world would be so vanilla. Be yourself and wear what you want.

Clionba · 02/01/2019 17:52

In all honesty, if you can't wear what you want at 26, it's never going to happen.
Go for it!
