Can you be too old to dress a certain way?

I've tried out quite a few different looks. Mostly alternative but settled into a "I can't really be arsed" look at the moment.
I miss my amazing outfits and loving my wardrobe, I'm literally a leggings and plain, baggy(ish) dress person at the moment. While it's comfortable it doesn't really do anything for me and I feel like my personality isn't coming through.
I miss my alternative style, mixing things up, feeling confident and just living what I wear.
He's the problem, I keep coming back to a gothic/Victorian type style.
I love it, I love the lace, I love the shape, my head just keeps screaming I want it and I want it now.
I'm going to be 27 this year and a mom of 2.
Am I being ridiculous? I've attached pictures of the clothes I want.
You only live once and all that.
What do you guys think?
I'm worried if I'm already feeling a bit hesitant about the comments I might get (I have low self esteem and high anxiety) then I might already be setting myself up to fail. But on the other hand I want to express myself, experiment and give it a go.
You only live once after all.
Imagine with tights, or black skinny jeans, a nice pair of ankle boots.
It won't all scream gothic, but a nice nod to the culture I grew up with and have always loved.

Not at 27 no. You are young.

MitziK · 02/01/2019 09:28

If a 500 year old Vampire can get away with wearing that without being too old for it, I'm pretty sure somebody aged 27 has nothing to worry about.

Just go for it.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 02/01/2019 09:30

That red one is absolutely stunning! I'd love to wear that and similar but shy away due to being almost 37, but I think that's also because I have vivid copper very curly hair and would probably look more like I was in a costume Grin

Bluelady · 02/01/2019 09:37

I'm old enough to be your granny and would wear those dresses if I was slim enough to do them justice.

You are being ridiculous. It looks like a fancy dress costume. You would look silly in that at any age but I suppose a teenager would get away with it more because you would hope they will grow out of it.

You can have a great personality in leggings and a dress. Wearing daft costumes doesn't show personality. It is for boring people who try to hard to show they are different.

Of course people will say wear what you want and ignore people like me but you should ask yourself what the positives are of wearing clothes like that because people will judge you for it.

Stephisaur · 02/01/2019 09:55

Go for it.

I know a 40 year old who happily still rocks the gothic look. She’s brilliant.

27 isn’t old (same age as me!) so if this is what you want to wear then go for it!

LoniceraJaponica · 02/01/2019 09:57

Good God woman! You are just a slip of a girl at 27!

Wear what you like.

BIWI · 02/01/2019 10:00

If it fits
If you like it
If you can afford it

THEN WEAR IT

Age has absolutely nothing to do with what you like to wear.

CountFosco · 02/01/2019 10:00

Advanced Style. 27, ppfft.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 02/01/2019 10:00

And just ignore people like @winebottle. What a dick head.

Crazyfrog007 · 02/01/2019 10:01

Oh ffs. I genuinely though you were going to say you were 50+

Youre bloody 27. Stop being daft and wear what you want.

JacquesHammer · 02/01/2019 10:01

Take a look at pics from Whitby goth weekend or various steampunk festivals.

Average age way older than 27.

Afternooninthepark · 02/01/2019 10:03

Go for it. You are never too old to wear whatever you want. 27 is so young. I follow Advanced Style on Instagram, those people are my inspiration, check them out, they are fantastic!

heartshapedknob · 02/01/2019 10:03

Wear whatever you want, it really doesn’t affect anyone else.
I’m almost 40 and still wear Goth-ish stuff, although at work it’s more about dark colours and the cut of clothes than lace and stuff.
I get some sideways looks on the school run sometimes but hey those people are usually wearing ridiculously overpriced sportswear that’s never seen the inside of a gym so whatever!

GrumpyOldMare · 02/01/2019 10:05

I'd wear that at your age. Love that style.
At 54,I feel (personally, for me) I'm too old for that. Plus I haven't the figure or legs to look good in it.

Lweji · 02/01/2019 10:05

It's not ridiculous!!! Grin

And you're not old. Grin

But it certainly isn't a usual look, particularly on a mummy Wink.

There's a middle ground, though.
Don't go from leggings and a top (why?, anyway) to full on dramatic lace dress. People will be startled.
But you can certainly introduce some more edgy pieces and looks into your daily life. At some point the dramatic lace dress won't seem so outlandish for you or others around you.

But do look out for impractical sleeves and skirts for daily use.

BTWifiwithFON · 02/01/2019 10:05

Wear it at any age, lovely clothes. I’m 45 and seem to be rocking a goth Mr Tumble look. Works for me.

SharpLily · 02/01/2019 10:11

I was going to point out that I don't usually agree with stereotyping clothes based upon age, but then give you exhibit one: Liz McDonald...Biscuit

Then I read that you're 27 and that becomes irrelevant because you have probably about two decades before you have to worry about this shit.

GrungeSponge · 02/01/2019 10:12

BT I really wanna see your Goth Mr Tumble style...

KC225 · 02/01/2019 10:15

27 is so young. In your case I don't think its age, I think its that while thing of becoming a busy mum, being rushed and dressing for convenience. Grabbing the quickest thing that is not speckled with mashed banana or baby spit up. Its so easy to fall into that leggings/tunics or mum jeans/t.shirts well of lost identity.

Those choice are great. As other people have stated, you are not too old. I am a massive fan of older 'out there' fashion women - Daphne Guinness, Mary Portas, Michéle Lamy, Amanda Eliach, and Isabella Blow (when she was alive) etc. Nearly all of those could be your Mother except Michéle Lamy who could be your grandmother.

It has less to with age, and more to do with being body conscious and what suits you. Crop tops, see through dresses can be ageing on an older lady thinking Madonna sometimes strays into choppy waters but like she cares what people think.

Good luck OP.

ShowOfHands · 02/01/2019 10:17

Blimey. I'm much older than you and wear what the fuck I like. My DC claim I dress like a wood elf. I wear a lot of patchwork and homemade floaty, asymmetric stuff or things I've knitted myself, plus Doc Martens and a ridiculous hat. If I am comfortable and it covers my erogenous zones, I don't care what other people think.

Supertiredmummy · 02/01/2019 10:22

I thought you were gonna say you were in your 50s or something. IM nearly 30 and dress far more outrageously than button up shirts and flowing victorian skirts with kids.
