Can you be too old to dress a certain way?

I've tried out quite a few different looks. Mostly alternative but settled into a "I can't really be arsed" look at the moment.
I miss my amazing outfits and loving my wardrobe, I'm literally a leggings and plain, baggy(ish) dress person at the moment. While it's comfortable it doesn't really do anything for me and I feel like my personality isn't coming through.
I miss my alternative style, mixing things up, feeling confident and just living what I wear.
He's the problem, I keep coming back to a gothic/Victorian type style.
I love it, I love the lace, I love the shape, my head just keeps screaming I want it and I want it now.
I'm going to be 27 this year and a mom of 2.
Am I being ridiculous? I've attached pictures of the clothes I want.
You only live once and all that.
What do you guys think?
I'm worried if I'm already feeling a bit hesitant about the comments I might get (I have low self esteem and high anxiety) then I might already be setting myself up to fail. But on the other hand I want to express myself, experiment and give it a go.
You only live once after all.
Imagine with tights, or black skinny jeans, a nice pair of ankle boots.
It won't all scream gothic, but a nice nod to the culture I grew up with and have always loved.

In all honesty, if you can't enjoy clothes when you're only 27, you're never going to be able to.

Bluelady · 02/01/2019 10:24

Wood elf! 🤣

HarleyQuinnxx · 02/01/2019 10:24

Love it I wish I could I always wished I could wear things like that but never have and now I regret it immensely

Blueblueyellow · 02/01/2019 10:28

The last pic, the black dress is gorgeous. With 2 kids it's so hard to go back to wearing anything that's not leggings and a comfortable top over them. Go for it and enjoy getting your style back Smile

DarlingNikita · 02/01/2019 10:31

Wear what you want and don't feel you can't go from your current clothes to these ones. 'People will be startled.'? Hmm People will survive it.

Irrelevant as you're so young, but I think this kind of style suits all ages. Think of Judi Dench, Maggie Smith et al playing Victorian aristos and dressed very similarly!

DeepanKrispanEven · 02/01/2019 10:31

OP isn't 27 as people keep saying, she's actually 26!

LadyBathory · 02/01/2019 10:32

Have a look at killstar, I wear what I want x don’t stressxxx yes I am the 27 year old mum with the Totoro bag and unicorn keychain lol

TimeToTakeTheTreeDown · 02/01/2019 10:36

I'm going to be 27 Whaaaaaat?!!! So you're only 26??

I'm 44 and I have 2 children and a professional career.

I am still most definitely 'alternative'.

I still had a mohawk at 27.

I have a friend who has just turned 56. He still has a mohican.

Ghanagirl · 02/01/2019 10:37

Although your style is very different to my own I’m in my late forties and believe in wear whatever makes you feel good.
It’s also about wearing what suits your body shape.

PineapplePower · 02/01/2019 10:48

Personally, I think the pieces you selected look a bit “costume-y” and late 90s Hot Topic, but surely you could start out, like another poster suggested, with a few daring pieces first? Corset-type tops, Victorian-style ankle boots and square necklines are some great additions to the usual wardrobe. Mixing it up a bit means that you’ll never look too fancy dress-ish (never go full Goth).

Also, some companies are doing amazing things to the hooded cloak that doesn’t look straight out of Hobbiton, check those out! They can actually look pretty well-designed and flattering, though a bit expensive. Think Kate Middleton coat dresses with a hood that you can pin with a statement brooch.

agirlhasnonameX · 02/01/2019 10:50

I'm alternative with 2 kids and 28 OP. Don't think I'll ever change.
I have a coat very similar to that, Id rip those sleeves quickly but the back is beautiful wish mine had that

bsc · 02/01/2019 10:51

showy my dd would adore your look!

BIWI · 02/01/2019 10:52

I thought you were gonna say you were in your 50s or something

And so what if she was? Hmm

The casual ageism on this site never fails to amaze me.

hazeyjane · 02/01/2019 10:53

I only met dh at 27 and think of that as my youth!

Wear what you like as long as it makes you happy. Neither age nor arse size should come into it.

MaggieAndHopey · 02/01/2019 10:54

PineapplePower essentially your post is telling the OP how she should dress, not whether she should allow herself to feel comfortable in the clothes she herself likes.

brizzledrizzle · 02/01/2019 10:56

I didn't see your age at first and I was looking for an age in the 50s! If you want to wear it then wear it whether you are 27 or 57.

JacquesHammer · 02/01/2019 11:00

Truly what every goth/alt aspires to Grin

heartshapedknob · 02/01/2019 11:00

27 is still young, even if you have responsibilities and a family. And anyway, you won’t stop being who you are when you are old - so just be yourself and moderate as appropriate. Works for me, professional STEM job and no one cares a jot.

PineapplePower · 02/01/2019 11:08

She doesn’t have to listen to me at all Grin just gave suggestions!

Cherries101 · 02/01/2019 11:09

It’s less about age and more about body type.

WhatdoImean · 02/01/2019 11:09

At the risk of coming across a bit smug..... REALLY REALLY wear what you want:-

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people’s gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practise a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple

You can definitely be too old for a leopard skin mini skirt I think that stops at 16 but otherwise go for it.

MsHopey · 02/01/2019 11:10

It's not all lacey.
But it is all very gothy.
I might be unrealistic, but I just throw clothes on it the morning, how hard can it be to throw on nicer clothes?
I've already got myself a very nice wig selection for days I cba with my hair 😂 most people think they're real and I've had a lot of compliments about my gorgeous hair (a real looking parting makes all the difference).

Can you be too old to dress a certain way?
OP posts:
BIWI · 02/01/2019 11:12

Personally I think a leopard skin miniskirt is incredibly tacky and tasteless, but I don't understand why the age of the wearer should come into it.

Who dictates this? Who says you can't wear it at any age?

Explain to me why women tell other women what they can and can't wear because of their age.

Snuffalo · 02/01/2019 11:12

Those clothes read “52 year old dinner lady on a weekend trip to Whitby” to me, so you’re at no risk whatsoever of looking like mutton dressed as lamb. Quite the opposite, in fact.
