I know it's yet another brexit thread but it genuinely just hit me that it's actually happening THIS YEAR! I am truly gutted. Would love someone with political knowledge to come on and reassure me that it actually won't be that bad. I have 3 children who have to live with the repercussions.

buble is on jules holland-this has to be a good sign

If you’ve got a work visa surely it means you pay tax and contribute?

Togaandsandals · 01/01/2019 14:26

ragged Why can’t your DD work her way across Europe anymore?

@nextissue, because non EU citizens usually need a work visa which are not easy to get and usually require skills and good qualifications. Not something a 18 year old will have.

Australia and Canada offer a one year under 30 work visa for UK citizens, America don’t. There is a possibility some EU countries may offer this eventually, but could take years and no guarantee it will happen. I lived and worked in Australia for 10 months in my twenties on a young person’s work visa. I lived with a group of non UK young people who were not entitled to a work visa. They were rightly envious of the opportunities I had. I think it’s very sad UK citizens opportunities for work in the EU will be reduced.

Togaandsandals · 01/01/2019 14:33

Alonelonelyloner, yes, of course, but the point is getting a work visa for a non EU country is harder. Many more requirements meaning a lot less UK citizens will with the opportunity to live in the EU.

missperegrinespeculiar · 01/01/2019 14:59

It is truly tragic, so much opportunity given up, for what? I still have not heard one serious argument that Brexit advantages the UK in any way whatsoever

so much ignorance! we will pay the price for decades to come

The ideal of a united Europe is one of the most inspiring in history, we ought to have stayed and made sure it became a fairer and more democratic Union, not ditched it!

winterpol · 01/01/2019 15:02

More fake news and bending of the truth. EU isn't a country to be a 'citizen' of. Its an economic union for the benefit of Juncker and his cronies, where the UK has been ripped off for years and the whole experiment is a mess (look at Greece, look at unemployment in Spain and Portugal) and look at the general arguing between countries about e.g. immigration or spending caps. I wish EU cronies would stop using MN to spout their tosh.

AuchAyeTheNo · 01/01/2019 15:13

I’ve never been a citizen of the EU, it doesnt exist.

I am however Scottish and a citizen of Scotland.

sonlypuppyfat · 01/01/2019 15:19

So the only plus is being able to work abroad? Wow

bellinisurge · 01/01/2019 15:20

You were never a citizen of the EU. You are a UK citizen with all the additional rights that being in the EU entailed.and you will lose those additional rights when we leave.
However you phrase it, you've just spotted that now?Hmm

Moussemoose · 01/01/2019 15:20

@winterpol how are poster on MN 'cronies' of the EU? You obviously use the term in a derogatory manner but I am unclear as to what you are implying.

Also, could you explain why unemployment in two countries is the fault of the EU. Internal policies are not controlled by the EU.

Do you really think we will stop "arguing" with other countries when we leave? We are still close neighbours and allies, the issue of immigration won't go away. We will not be able to dictate terms to our neighbours. We will still have to engage and discuss but we will have significantly less power and influence.

The EU facilitates and helps negotiations between countries when you are on the inside. Doesn't go as well on the outside - just look at the Brexit negotiations to prove that point.

Birdsgottafly · 01/01/2019 15:23

winterpol, every financial analysis of the EU and the UK, shows that for every £1 we put in, we get between £4-7 back.

Can you link to one that shows we get a bad deal, or 'ripped off'.

winterpol · 01/01/2019 15:24

Moussemoose · 01/01/2019 15:24

@winterpol also we are citizens of the EU. This is not fake news. You use the term 'fake news' the way Trump does. It means something you don't know about or don't understand.

Citizenship of the EU was given to the qualifying countries as part of the Maastricht Treaty in 1992. This has already been pointed out on this thread.

You might not want it, you might not like it, but you have the right to call yourself a citizen of the EU.

Buteo · 01/01/2019 15:27

EU citizenship does exist. Article 20 TFEU.

I am however Scottish and a citizen of Scotland

And as such you are British and currently an EU citizen by automatic operation of British and European law.

My vote to Leave wasn't easily obtained, a great deal of thought went into it. I did realize that a Leave vote would very probably result in a lot of uncertainity and possible 'hardships'.

I am not surprised by any of the subsequent politiking, I am not surprised by the EU's stance nor anything that is happening now.

I voted to Leave because the EU has evolved in a way that now, ultimately not only does not benefit the UK, but has become its own Frankenstein and does not benefit any of its members.

That is the benefit and positive of the UK Leave vote. No magic wands, nothing else but that for now - the UK will leave the EU because of what the EU has become, not because of what it previously was or what it previously did.

It's too huge for itself and the big people in little countries that inform and form it, including those from the UK.

BishBoshBashBop · 01/01/2019 15:43

SusanneLinder Spain will flip flop over this depending on Catalonia. Scotland can't depend on them not vetoing.

BlueJag · 01/01/2019 15:47

@missperegrinespeculiar it's up to you to find the advantages of leaving the failing block.
Look up Professor Patrick Mindford CBE. The advantages of leaving the EU are enormous.

TheNavigator · 01/01/2019 15:50

Thank you OP, you have galvanised me to email my MP just now - I implore everyone else on this thread to do the same. It is the only opportunity we have when we are stuck with the 2 main political parties both supporting Brexit, despite only a small majority in the referendum. Who speaks for the 48% or remainers?

SusanWalker · 01/01/2019 15:53

Professor Minford who thinks the collapse of the manufacturing and farming industries is a price worth paying?

winterpol · 01/01/2019 15:53

And, I would add, I believe the OP is just trying to promote the EU, rather duplicitously, with a 'nonsense-surprise' headline. Its not a genuine political debate - you can get that on Brexit chat in other forum on MN if you're that desperate. ITs like the "people's vote" campaign - as if people would be so dumb as to not notice thats what we had already Shock! But they keep banging the dead horse, as if by some kind of brainwashing, people will support their pro- EU views. All rather sinister, which fits the bill (Merckel, Juncker their leaders). I have a family member who voted Remain and she is honest and civil with her views. But so many Remainers who ram it down our throats at every opportunity, often quite unpleasantly, so 100% deserve to be exposed for their political deceptions sleights of hand. Whilst preaching lovey-dovey European union of course Grin.

Moussemoose · 01/01/2019 15:58

We are often told the advantages are 'enormous'. However, no posters are ever able to list them and then defend them.

The advantages of leaving are expressed as abstract nouns like 'freedom' or 'democracy' with nothing to back them up.

HateIsNotGood expresses the view that the EU is "too big" but doesn't say why this is an issue. She states we don't gain any benefit totally dismissing our trading links, FOM for U.K. citizens and many other benefits.

The EU has 'become' something bad but no details are evidence are provided to say what that actually means.

Moussemoose · 01/01/2019 16:02

@winterpol yes if it was a genuine debate you would have responded to the points made about your previous posts.

Any comments on why remain posters are 'cronies' and what you mean by that. Any comment on you claiming EU citizenship was 'fake news' when it isn't.

Please specify what these 'political sleights of hand' are.

The legality of a second referendum has been discussed and debated. It would be both legal and constitutional. It would involve an Act of Parliament. No secrecy, no cheating, just legislation.

Craft1905 · 01/01/2019 16:23

Craft1905 , keep up at the back. Spain would NOT veto an independent Scotland.
uk.reuters.com/article/uk-spain-politics-scotland-idUKKCN1NP25P

They pulled back from that position a few days later. Independent Scotland joining the EU ain't happening.

HateIsNotGood · 01/01/2019 16:29

HateIs has stated a generalisation which could be expanded upon but apols have to go 2work. My post was in response to the constant questions asking a leave voter to state a positive reason. That's it.
