Or am I about to poison my family?

Help! Cooked the turkey on Christmas Day, cooled, put straight in fridge and then put in freezer on Boxing Day. Took out of freezer, defrosted and made into pie yesterday along with bits of sausage, stuffing etc that had also been in freezer/fridge with turkey. I'm now reheating it (properly with meat thermometer) for tea tonight. The turkey, sausages, bacon and stuffing will have been cooked, frozen, defrosted, reheated, cooled then heated again. NHS website says not to reheat turkey more than once, this will be twice. Will we be ok? Thanks!

I wouldn't reheat meat twice, no.

JustABetterPlayer · 31/12/2018 18:01

It will be fine, there will be s ridiculously small chance of causing illness. The same bullshit reasoning we should not reheat baby milk, rice etc

Kitkatmonster · 31/12/2018 18:01

Definite no from me.

Wolfiefan · 31/12/2018 18:01

I wouldn’t. You shouldn’t reheat meat more than once.

BackBoiler · 31/12/2018 18:01

I wouldn't but you only live once Grin

cloudtree · 31/12/2018 18:02

Not twice no. You ought to have cooked pie and eaten pie immediately. it would then have been fine.

user1471530109 · 31/12/2018 18:02

Eeeekkk.
I've done similar. I have a pie and curry in freezer from left over turkey.

I think NHS website means don't reheat turkey that's been left in fridge (cooked). I know my DM used to give us cold turkey leftovers the next-day with full on regards with it. So cold meat, hot ready of food....

I'd reheat it...been doing it for years and never had a problem.

user1471530109 · 31/12/2018 18:03

I'd make sure it was vhot though....the pp above wouldn't heat a takeaway the next day...would you?

45andahalf · 31/12/2018 18:04

I mean, you’d almost certainly be fine. But I wouldn’t want to eat it.

cloudtree · 31/12/2018 18:05

cook turkey (heat 1) , put in fridge, bake pie (heat 2) eat pie is fine.

cook turkey (heat 1), put in fridge, bake pie (heat 2), let pie cool, freeze pie and then defrost and reheat pie (heat 3) is a step too far by most food safety guidelines.

45andahalf · 31/12/2018 18:06

user no, the NHS website means don’t reheat meat twice. It’s nothing to do with storing it in next fridge.

chillpizza · 31/12/2018 18:07

I have no problem reheated last nights Chinese but turkey three times is a step to far.

ollhe · 31/12/2018 18:07

I’d just make sure it was properly hot. It’ll be fine!

TwitterQueen1 · 31/12/2018 18:08

Well, I've been doing this for at least 20 years for my family because a turkey pie is absolutely essential of course, and it gets microwaved afterwards.... no-one has been ill so far! Xmas Wink.

BigChocFrenzy · 31/12/2018 18:10

My cousin did similarly after their 40th anniversary, recooked the frozen leftovers a few days later
They had D&V all that week.
You don't always get away withit.

dementedpixie · 31/12/2018 18:10

I would think that as long as it was heated to lava hot that anything nasty would be destroyed

Wolfiefan · 31/12/2018 18:10

You’ve been lucky. Others may not be.
Please don’t reheat meat more than once. It can be really risky.

user1471530109 · 31/12/2018 18:11
Grin Does it matter if I didn't actually reheat the turkey in stage 2? I cooked the sauces for both and then put cold turkey in (I haven't put the pastry in the pie yet...just made the mix for inside). in still going to eat eat and I'm normally v ott about food hygiene (or so I thought).
GreenThing · 31/12/2018 18:11

I've reheated meat more than two or three times and been fine.

We make stew and leave it out on the hob for days, reheating the whole pot a couple of times a day at least. Never been sick.

We eat leftover, unrefrigerated rice too. Still not sick.

I'm sure rice poisoning is bad, but vanishingly rare.

Reading stuff on here you'd think if you didn't stick to NHS advice, poisoning was absolutely guaranteed. Hmm

ShutUpBaz · 31/12/2018 18:11

Not in a million years should you do that. So dangerous.

dementedpixie · 31/12/2018 18:13

How dangerous is it really? If it is heated to piping hot then what would make you ill?

Wolfiefan · 31/12/2018 18:15

I wouldn’t risk my health or that of my family.
If the sauce was cold when the defrosted turkey etc went in then fine. If it was hot then I wouldn’t.

Wolfiefan · 31/12/2018 18:15

Heat doesn’t kill everything. Or we could eat anything. Just really hot.

JuniperBeer · 31/12/2018 18:15

Surely it’ll be three times you’ve cooked it if you cook it now?

Absolutely fine to reheat once- eg, cook, eat, chill leftovers. Freeze. Defrost. Heat once more and then eat.

Otherwise how would you ever freeze bolognese or curry etc.

But not make a pie with leftovers, chill and then reheat again no

RedWineIsFabulous · 31/12/2018 18:16

It’s a definite no from me.

Absolutely no way.
