to think Duchess Kate is worryingly thin?

Just saw pictures of the Royal Family coming out of Church at Christmas and was struck by how incredibly thin Kate is, especially around the waist and hips.

I'm sure I will be accused of just feeling jealous, but honestly I would be concerned if I saw an 18-y-o girl that skinny, let alone a woman in her 30s with three children. I can't imagine how severely you have to diet to be that thin so soon after giving birth. I know she is naturally slim but even so, I am worried the constant media attention is having a bad effect on her self-image/mental health.

She has to have Size 6 clothes (smallest uk size usually) taken in.

EerieSilence · 01/01/2019 08:12

@LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset thanks, that was my exactly my point.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 01/01/2019 08:25

Everyone knows how prolific obesity is now in this country. We don't need a sanctimonious lecture on that. "We've lost sight of what normal looks like" is such a trite thing to say. Of course we haven't! 95% of people in the public eye are slim and healthy in stature because apparently the general public don't want to see any actress/tv presenter/weather presenter over a size 8-10 on their screens. Slim is all around us and daily presented as the absolute norm. When quite a number of people (with no personal connection or agenda) comment that they think someone in the public eye is unusually thin my immediate reaction is that they are concerned for that woman's health, not that they are jealous, bitchy or too fat themselves to know what they are talking about.

ElspethFlashman · 01/01/2019 08:29

True Pineapple There's not one thing that's naturally attained by those figures. Hugh Jackman's later physique as Wolverine was notoriously thanks to growth hormone. And theres that famous on set photo of Tom Hardy as Bane where his poor back is covered in steroid acne. I imagine there are few "hunks" in the industry who dont use it as that figure is impossible to get naturally. Maybe Mark Wahlberg and he gets up to work out at 2am and still doesn't look as cut as those superhero guys. You need steroids for that, end of.

At least they stop taking it in between roles and go back to looking less extreme. They don't maintain less than 5% body fat outside of filming. But Kate maintains it 365 days a year, for years and years.

She can’t be “too” thin as she has easily conceived three kids and fertility is one of the first things to go. She hasn’t got a sunken in face.

I suspect she is always watching every morsel and that is her life now

I’m tall and slim - BMI of 20 ish and am always being told I’m “very thin”. I have a nice roll of flab around my middle. I genuinely do think people are generally so overweight than this is the new norm. Had I lived in the 50s, I would have been normal.

cushioncovers · 01/01/2019 08:37

I think she probably works incredibly hard to stay in shape. Most people I know who are very slim don't have a bust and look thin in the face so I imagine she's had to work on her imagine to look as she does. But I don't blame her if I had the time, resources and was in the public eye constantly I would do the same.

Hanuman · 01/01/2019 08:38

I do always find it hilarious when posters are convinced that Kate is a SAHM of 3 just working hard like them. I am sure it is incredibly hard having two nannies and full household staff. Other than an occasional day of waving, she really does next to nothing.

HairyDogsFeet · 01/01/2019 08:40

as she has easily conceived three kids and fertility is one of the first things to go. She hasn’t got a sunken in face

Did she? Done sources suggest not at least for 1st

SerenDippitty · 01/01/2019 08:46

Birth rates are actually higher in countries where malnutrition is endemic. Fertility isn’t always an indicator of optimum health.

Tom Hardy was def on steroids, as was Hugh Jackman, but the consensus is that Hemsworth is all-natural. He's just one of those annoyingly genetically gifted people. (I speak as someone who lifts heavy 4 times a week and has put on about 4 lb of muscle, if even that, in two years) aretheyonsteroids.com/did-chris-hemsworth-take-steroids-for-thor/

I don't know why I thought it was important to add this, but here you go anyway!

Notquiteagandt · 01/01/2019 10:00

I hate things like this. Imagine the ourrage if someone posted saying someone was chubby.

Why is thin shaming more acceptible?

GaryBaldbiscuit · 01/01/2019 10:09

meh,
there is always outrage on mumsnet,
someone somewhere will be offended or at least be offended on someone else's behalf.

user1475140247 · 01/01/2019 11:05

If someone started a thread titled 'AIBU? to think XYZ is worryingly fat?', there would be incandescent rage from the majority of MN posters, and the thread would be shut down.

Surely this thread is not in the spirit of MN, MNHQ? What with encouraging and allowing misogyny?

Proves my point that women are worst misogynists.

GaryBaldbiscuit · 01/01/2019 11:08

Well what stops you reporting then User?

Eatmycheese · 01/01/2019 11:13

How many people on here have seen her in real life? The camera adds a far few pounds on does it not? I have been stuck by how thin - not super slim - she is starting to look. Her frame is minute.

I think Kate is really lovely, but I do think that she looks as though she has gone a bit too thin. She didn’t need to lose any weight.
I can imagine the tsunami of bitching though if she had a muffin top or bingo wings at a posh do.
She can’t win.

Kikita · 01/01/2019 11:16

21 pages now! Has anyone come up with a reason why this is worthy of discussion yet?

feelingverylazytoday · 01/01/2019 11:21

Why is thin shaming more acceptable?
Why do some people call any discussion of weight/size 'shaming'? No one has suggested Kate should be ashamed in any way.

MysteriousLoner · 01/01/2019 11:26

It is her business, if she likes being so thin, so what?

But it is very ageing, she looks at least 10 years older in the face, but some people choose the body after a certain age, some people choose the face to look younger, its her choice.

KimchiLaLa · 01/01/2019 13:50

Did she? Done sources suggest not at least for 1st

I've never heard a rumour she struggled?

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 01/01/2019 14:46

Well she cant have struggled for very long!

She is very slim but not ill looking. Must be all the fretting about when to go shooting

HairyDogsFeet · 01/01/2019 15:12

There were media reports of them being seen in the evening at a certain medical facility. Some time before the pregnancy was announced. Think there may have been some pictures as well.

XmasPostmanBos · 01/01/2019 15:18

If she is anything like me she has gained at least a stone over Christmas anyway, and we will have nothing to worry about.

YeOldeNameChange · 01/01/2019 15:28

Some people don’t eat much. Sounds obvious but not everyone is obsessed with food. I have a very thin friend who always got those anorexia comments. She just wasn’t bothered about food
I’m way too interested in food (carbs) and staying slim requires a lot of focus and effort which is why the idea of thin privilege is bonkers. What next, better looking people privilege? Better hair privilege?! It’s called life and luck of the draw!

katekat383 · 01/01/2019 15:28

I don’t think people are lambasting Kate at all. Some are of the opinion she is a tad too thin; some appear to have taken such comments as an attack on their own weight and have become defensive.

Kate is lovely by most definitions of the term.

katekat383 · 01/01/2019 15:30

Most certainly this thread is not “thin shaming” whatever that is.Confused
