To ask for inspiration on a cover up tattoo (pic attached)

There should be two pictures attached to my post. The first one is what I wanted, the second is what I have. I hate it, for obvious reasons! It's terrible Blush

I have had tattoos done by the same artist before, and all his other work is excellent, but he really messed this one up! I'm not going back again.

Can someone help me with ideas for a small cover up please? I have a horrible imagination and anything I like is either not dark enough or massive. I don't want it too big. Any idea will help Smile

You need to research cover up artists and make sure you get really good quality work done this time.

I wonder if you showed the design you wanted to a cover up artist if they might be able to adapt it to a beautifully drawn wolf for you.

PengAly · 29/12/2018 01:51

Hmm and this is why you really shouldnt expect a tattoo artist to replicate another person's tattoo- it jist never works and also stifles creativity on both sides! Find a tattoo artist that advertises cover ups and have a chat with them about ideas

wakemewhenitsallover · 29/12/2018 01:53

How about going to a tattoo convention? Then you could speak to lots of tattoo artists in one day and get several suggestions. They're all over the UK but here's the first one that came up in Google for 2019:

Whyarealltheusernamestaken · 29/12/2018 01:54

Tbh they both look awful

AnxiousMama101 · 29/12/2018 01:58

If you get a good enough coverup artist, you might be able to keep the same tattoo but have it revamped

MissLadyM · 29/12/2018 01:59

Why the hell do people do this to themselves?

wakemewhenitsallover · 29/12/2018 02:00

Whyarealltheusernamestaken how is that helpful? Hmm Make you feel good to stick the knife in, did it?

Please ignore this poster, horsesheep they obviously just want to have a go.

Whyarealltheusernamestaken · 29/12/2018 02:02

I was just being honest not spiteful

AdobeWanKenobi · 29/12/2018 02:03

Why the hell do people do this to themselves?

Well the hell do people feel the need to judge?
🙄

Whatififall · 29/12/2018 02:05

I’m pretty sure you’ll have to go for a big design to cover it up.

I have a date on my inner wrist I’d like covered (wedding date, now divorced) and I’ve seen a couple of artists about covering it up and they’ve all said I’d have to go for a large design to get anything decent over the top of it.

However, the line work on yours is lighter than mine so it might be easier to do.

If you like wolves could you get a bigger wolf and have this one worked into the mane or body?

AdobeWanKenobi · 29/12/2018 02:09

A good artist can work with that and make it look stunning btw, it doesn't need a cover up it just needs what my Mother would call 'titivating' 😁

Rawlins11 · 29/12/2018 02:10

Definitely have a think about something that actually inspires YOU.

PurpleCrowbar · 29/12/2018 02:23

Honestly, I don't think the original was all that!

The poor guy didn't have much to work from.

You now need someone good you can have a chat with & bounce ideas around, before they even come near you with the ink! It won't be cheap. Get a really good personal recommendation.

I lived with a very 'meh' tattoo for a couple of years (I became pregnant shortly after having it done so was rather stuck with it) but once I had it reworked - & genuinely it was a tweak; sharper edges, more detail - I fell in love with it & have remained so for a decade.

Somtamthai · 29/12/2018 04:20

I wrote a long reply then it deleted lol.

Op is definitely go to a tattoo convention you can chat with lots of artists and get some ideas.

I’d say make sure it’s meaningful to you. Everyone saying the original is awful - so what it is not your body if you don’t like it then don’t get it.

I have a meh tattoo so I get it. Although mine is well done, I just didn’t really think it through lol.

Anyway

What about a dreamcatcher and the head can be redesigned to be the middle of the dream catcher then have a nice wolf on it.

Or a lion so the original line work is part of the design.

Or I seen the attached online so perhaps something like this could work?

A cover up will probably need to be big so if this is on your wrist it may not work. Which is why I thought to try and incorporate the original line work.

Good luck op

Any chance you’d consider getting it removed instead of covered up?

It looks to be almost all black and mosty lines without much shading so it shouldn’t be too hard to remove.

horsesheep · 29/12/2018 10:51

Thank you for everyone's suggestions Smile

I know the tattoo isn't 'all that' but I let my younger brother pick Blush

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 29/12/2018 10:57

From my experience the best tattoos I have allowed the artist some creativity, that is I had a general idea and they came up with the finished product. I now trust my artist so gave him complete free reign with my last one and the results are amazing. I have been tattooed at a convention but there are limits and it's not the same as a studio so you could consider the convention a research trip?

Oysterbabe · 29/12/2018 11:01

The artist did a pretty rubbish job didn't they. It's meant to be howling but looks like it's having an orgasm.

Do want a better wolf or something completely different?

horsesheep · 29/12/2018 16:13

@Oysterbabe my thoughts exactly 😂😂 and I'm not bothered if it's a wolf really. Anything decent to cover it up

ChairmanMiaow123 · 29/12/2018 16:37

Just out of sheer nosiness, on my part, horse; what is the story behind your brother picking the wolf design?

DisplayPurposesOnly · 29/12/2018 16:44

Your version of the wolf looks quite dolphin-y to me. Maybe making it more of a dolphin is the way to go?

DanielRicciardosSmile · 29/12/2018 16:49

@Somtamthai that tattoo is beautifully done but is inexplicably giving me the creeps - I want to run away from it!

TheCraicDealer · 29/12/2018 17:07

A few laser sessions to lighten it would probably give you a lot more options. You wouldn't need to go as big/dark with the cover up.

horsesheep · 29/12/2018 18:47

@ChairmanMiaow123

My brother is only 10 and lives in a foster home over 200 miles way meaning I never get to see him. He asked if he could pick my tattoo so I remember him. It broke my heart him thinking that I'll forget him one day so I agreed. When this ones covered over I'm going to let him pick another one because the one he chose originally would be covered over. Lesson learned though Blush I'm definitely going to have one I know the tattoo artist can do 😂

OP posts:
ChairmanMiaow123 · 29/12/2018 19:05

horse - i can easily see why your brother broke your heart a wee bit, thinking you’ll forget about him. Bless his little socks.

And indeed! You live and learn, eh? 😉
