I’m just doing my budget for January and wondering if most people will be skint in January or do you budget and it’s not a problem?

Yes, but because both our car insurances are due renewal, not because of Christmas.

Lifeofsmiley · 30/12/2018 21:52

starzig, what’s a party account?

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 30/12/2018 22:08

Jan will be very tight as it's a long month, am still catching up from Christmas and I have my dds bday to sort out.

Will be careful with what little money I have!

AdoraBell · 30/12/2018 22:15

Fingers crossed for you Sagely, and everyone else facing to prospect of job losses.

ohtheholidays · 30/12/2018 22:21

No but most probably the first January in years that I haven't been skint.

I am determined to be better with money and alot of Januarys money will be spent on buying new bits for the house, paying the deposit for our holiday and paying some money into park for the first time ever, the rest will be used for bills and what ever is left will be saved up for our holiday.

PrimalLass · 30/12/2018 22:27

Yes a bit, but have a full freezer so that will help.

starzig · 30/12/2018 22:43

Lifeofsmiley: it's a bit stashed to cover expensive months, holidays, festival tickets and the like so I don't need to dip my proper savings. Took £500 of it to help cover xmas pressies in december.

PookieDo · 30/12/2018 22:49

Yes because my washing machine broke and I needed 4 new tyres 3 days before Christmas. Tyres were my own fault for not checking sooner. Wiped me out. I am lucky in that I have quite full cupboards, it will be ok. No treats or extras all month though as 5 weeks till payday and didn’t get any UC as I got paid ‘twice’ in the assessment period

singleascheeseslice · 30/12/2018 22:53

Yes but not because of overdoing it at xmas, I'm pretty good at budgeting for that. I had an expensive MOT before Christmas plus I have insurance in January so it's left me really tight till the end of the month. February should be pretty nice though Smile

PixiKitKat · 30/12/2018 22:58

Nope! I dont get paid until tomorrow so I haven't had the dreaded 6 week wait between wages.

Seren85 · 31/12/2018 00:24

No but we don't have children and most festive meals we're eaten with family (we did offer to pitch in a bit but we're politely refused). We do the big family gathering for NY and used cludcard points for the alcohol. I appreciate we're lucky and things change when we have children (if we're lucky enough to do so).

Elliejojo · 31/12/2018 04:45

I won’t need to get into debt but I doubt there will be much money spare by the end as we have had to buy things for our new baby. Also I tend to buy a few things in the sale that need replacing and dd’s fees for her hobby are due at the start of term. So it won’t leave much change at the end of the month.

DeliveredByKiki · 31/12/2018 05:03

No - we started using YNAB about 3 years ago and have never again spent the first three months of the year paying off the last 3 months, it’s been a game changer

We have to be careful though as doing work on the house so putting every penny into that

reeree1805 · 31/12/2018 05:20

Im skint most months . I have to save for everything. But all bills are always paid Good food in cupboards happy kids. Just dont have much at the end of it all.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 31/12/2018 06:27

No we don't get into debt for Xmas or for any reason, and we plan for the cost of Christmas all year round.

Yellowsubmarine79 · 31/12/2018 07:08

I'm rubbish with money and am skint already 😂😩

crimson30 · 31/12/2018 07:14

Nope. I don't own a credit card. Everything is paid for out of a current account and anything left that month goes into savings.

Crimson72 · 31/12/2018 07:25

What’s YNAB?

Johnnycomelately1 · 31/12/2018 07:28

No, but given I’ll be doing dry, vegan, spend nothing January I might as well be!

Lifeofsmiley · 31/12/2018 07:42

Thanks starzig, I think I need a party account in my life

YNAB is you need a budget, a budgeting app

JustanotherCHRISTMASuser01 · 31/12/2018 08:43

yes and no.
yes in the sense of its a long month for disposable income pot.
no in the sense of we have money should we NEED to dip into it but i want to avoid it

Haisuli · 31/12/2018 08:55

Yes. Totally overspent at.christmas, and annoyingly my son's summer school trip has to be paid in full by Feb, so my council tax savings will go on that. We are going to do some ebaying and cut back on meat and alcohol....both of which are desperately needed as we all feel gross at the moment.

thefinn · 31/12/2018 11:16

A bit. But my own fault for agreeing to go on a small trip back in sept.. what was I thinking?..

lubeybooby · 31/12/2018 11:30

no, because I plan for it and don't overspend at Xmas

this is after getting thoroughly fed up of it happening in some previous years though. I learned to be more careful.

onemouseplace · 31/12/2018 12:01

Not skint, but will be doing a spending reset as we've got used to spending a bit more freely than I would like over the last few weeks!
